From its own offering fund, the Fort Bliss Hope Chapel sponsored a non-religious banquet for spouses of deployed Fort Bliss units at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center for the first time Saturday evening.
The two-hour event included a catered dinner, child care and inspirational speeches from published author Diana Juergens and other experienced military wives.
“We didn’t want them to have to lift a finger. That’s why we served them a meal [and] took care of their kids,” said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Scott Sterling.
Through word of mouth and Fort Bliss family readiness groups, very few guests who attended the event were members of the church.
“We wanted this to be across the post – not just our chapel, and I think we succeeded,” Sterling said. “The congregation wanted this to be a gift to the people – to the women.”
When asked, many of the spouses confirmed being able to relate to the anecdotes and words of encouragement given by the speakers.
“What [they] said about us being really strong and resilient definitely applied, and I appreciated hearing those words,” said Arianna McDaniel, an Army wife of two years.
“It was really nice that they gave specific examples to the spouses to let them know they are not alone in the troubles or issues they go through,” said Brandon Gangstead, a volunteer and chapel member at the event.
