El Paso’s Rio Bravo Middle School and Fort Bliss’ 125th Brigade Support Battalion continued buidling their Partners in Education relationship March 5 as the school handed over their principal’s duties to one of the battalion’s officers for the day.
Javier Suffle, the usual Rio Bravo Middle School principal, looked on as 2nd Lt. Nicole Prescott, dressed in the Army Service Uniform, checked on classes, made sure the students understood the class material, ensured proper upkeep of the school and even checked for “stragglers” making their way to class.
“It was really a humbling experience, but it’s just another way for our organization, 125th BSB, myself and the Rio Bravo Middle School to continue building public relations,” said Prescott, a medical logistics officer with 125th BSB, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
Suffle said he still has childhood memories of field trips to Fort Bliss and McGregor Range, N.M. When he heard the Army could be Rio Bravo’s partner in education he jumped at the opportunity to give his students the same experiences.
“When I was in fifth grade, they took us to McGregor Range and we got to shoot rifles and I still remember that. It was a great experience – I have vivid memories of that day,” said Suffle.

Prescott helped make some of her own lasting impressions on current students of Rio Bravo Middle School.
“I think it’s important for the kids because they build a big brother, big sister relationship and in that sense, they will begin to have a role model,” said Prescott. “I definitely think that we come to the schools and help.”
Prescott said the 125th BSB will continue to provide Rio Bravo Middle School with lasting memories of Soldiers giving students opportunities to further their education.
“It’s great for the Soldiers to interact with the kids and get some volunteer work in and give back to the community,” said Prescott. “I feel honored that I was selected to have this position.”
