Editor’s Note: This article is part two of a series on 3-43 ADA’s participation in Coalition Joint Task Force Exercise.
Tuesday 3rd Battalion, 43 Air Defense Artillery rail loaded more than 120 pieces of equipment to Camp LeJeune, N.C., to participate in the Coalition Joint Task Force Exercise 2-04. The equipment will ride on a cross-country trek of approximately 1,900 miles over three rail carriers; the participating Soldiers will fly via military charter. To insure that the Humvees, FMTVs, HEMTTs, and other pieces of equipment will roll upon their arrival, 3-43 conducted Movement Preparation Assembly Operations from May 15 to 21.

The operations were overseen by Master Sgt. Victor Aponte, the battalion’s senior maintenance supervisor. “For rail load, we have three preparation stations that vehicles must pass before they can be transported; we have six for airloads,” Aponte said. “Station 2 is our inspection point where we use -10,-20, and -30 levels of preventive maintenance. Identified faults are worked off at Station 3, the repair point. This is where broken or missing parts are also installed.

“Then, we update the DA Form 5988-E for that vehicle. Station 4 is our fueling point. Each vehicle will leave the Motor Pool with three quarters of a full tank of fuel,” explained Aponte.

Aponte expects the vehicles to “jump and drive” when they get to North Carolina. “There may be flat tires or dead batteries when we arrive,” he said, “but each vehicle has air hoses and we have wreckers to jump start batteries. We will upload fully mission capable vehicles at Fort Bliss and download fully mission capable vehicles at Camp LeJeune.”
