The dominance 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade’s track team
displayed during the first night of the post track championships spilled
over to the second night May 19 as they won the post track title by
100 points.
When the dust settled – after El Paso’s spring winds blew
through – 35th racked up 131 points, far outdistancing the 31
from runner-up 11th ADA Bde. The 6th ADA Bde was third with 27 points.
“I wanted to stay behind and draft, but I was in front so I tried
to stay in front and set a steady pace,” said Robert Lucero, an
Artesia, N.M., native, after leading 35th to a sweep in the men’s
5,000-meter run. “I’ve run track since 7th grade. I was
a cross-country district champ and 15th in the state.”
Of the 13 finals held, 35th placed in 12 of them, coming up empty only
in the men’s 100-meter dash. Marques Coffie of HHB Center won
that event in 11.20 seconds, edging Jalani Sanders (11.22) of 6th ADA
Bde and Rahmin Norwood (11.25) of 31st ADA Bde.
“My first couple steps out of the blocks is my bread and butter,”
said Coffie, a Soldier who had just transferred from Korea and was still
inprocessing when the post track meet took place. “I like to run
against myself (striving for improvement). I ran track all through high
school and was ranked at one time in the 60-meter dash.”
The 35th women won 11 medals on the second night of competition, with
the men tallying 9. The accompanying chart lists the medal winners in
each event, along with total team scores.
