A Soldiers from
the 178th Maintenance Company trained beyond the planned requirements
during the 2nd Battalion, 1st ADA field training exercise, June 7-16.
Company Commander Capt. Tony Walters invited civilian friends to assist
in simulated attacks of paintball toting terrorists. Chris Zett, Gene
Wolf and Mark Bochnowski, along with Spc. Tim Thompson, comprised the
terrorist attack force, which helped the Soldiers train to defend against
attack and to take prisoners of war. But the would-be terrorists were
only the beginning of the story, which involved several separate scenarios
building on one another.
“Capt. Walters established the scenarios based on lessons learned
in Operation Iraqi Freedom,” said 1st Lt. James L. Crocker. “We
brought civilians out to the field site to make the scenarios more realistic.”
After the last attack, in which several terrorists acted as protestors
to draw Soldiers to an ambush at the camp’s entry control point,
several Soldiers required medical evacuation due to simulated wounds.
Medics from Headquarters Battery, 2-1 ADA, tended to Soldiers’
simulated wounds and prepared them for medical evacuation as aviators
from the 1256 Medical Co. flew to the camp.
The aviators MEDEVACed the 178th Maint. Co. Soldiers to the HHB, 2-1
camp, where more HHB medics trained on MEDEVAC procedures. The Soldiers
were then MEDEVACed back to the 178th camp.
“The overall training was outstanding,” concluded Crocker.
“The Soldiers were able to refresh themselves on unit defense
and MEDEVAC operations.”
