Over the past couple of months there have been several ceremonies held
here on Fort Bliss such as the Salute to the Union, Memorial Day ceremony,
Air Defense Artillery birthday, the promotion of Brig. Gen. Charles
A. Anderson, deputy commanding general of Fort Bliss and the decommissioning
of 4th Battalion, 6th ADA Brigade. This week the Noncommissioned Officers
Academy conducted a change of responsibility ceremony for the deputy
commandant.
Students, Soldiers and family members filed into the Fort Bliss Air
Defense Artillery museum to see 1st Sgt. Jimmie W. Nelson bid farewell
to the NCO Academy and welcome 1st Sgt. Scott R. Wilmot.
“Today is significant to the Fort Bliss Noncommissioned Officers
Academy, the Air Defense Artillery Branch and our corps because it not
only recognizes the outstanding effort and sad farewell of 1st Sgt.
Nelson and his family ... but it enforces to all those witness that
there is now a new deputy commandant here ready to lead this academy,”
said Command Sgt. Maj. Chet M. Allen, commandant of the NCO Academy.
Nelson has held many positions in his military career. Before becoming
first sergeant of the academy he was the chief instructor of the Primary
Leadership Development Course. He has been stationed in Waegwan and
Suwon, Republic of South Korea, Fort Stewart, Georgia, and Fort Polk,
Louisiana. He was a field recruiter and station commander in Las Vegas,
Nevada, and has been first sergeant of several units here.
“First Sgt. Nelson you have set a new standard as deputy commandant
with your professionalism, knowledge, desire and relentless efforts,”
Allen said. The next step in Nelson’s career is going to the U.S.
Army Sergeants Major Academy to attend the sergeants major course.
Allen welcomed Wilmot into the NCO Academy and gave him these words
of advice, “When you’re first sergeant, you are a role model
whether you know it or not. You are a role model for the Soldier that
will be in your job … not only next month or next year, but 10
years from now.” He went on to say, “no where in the Army
is that more true than here at the NCO Academy. Every day Soldiers are
watching and deciding if you are the kind of first sergeant and leader
that they want to be.”
Wilmot comes to the NCO Academy from 3rd Bn., 43rd ADA, where he was
the battalion operations sergeant major. Wilmot has been to various
duty stations and holds four different military occupational specialties.
Wilmot and his wife Carol have been married for 16 years and have one
son Scott.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Allen, I look forward to working with you and
taking the NCO Academy to the next level. You and I will exceed all
expectations. To the cadre and students of the NCO Academy: everything
we do is a team effort, I will lead you with everything I have and continue
to set and exceed high standards in everything we do,” Wilmot
said.
Wilmot thanked Command Sgt. Maj. Stanley L. Davis, U.S. Army ADA Center
and Fort Bliss command sergeant major, for giving him the opportunity
to serve as the deputy commandant. Wilmot bid farewell to Nelson, “1st
Sgt. Nelson, thank you for your friendship and a great transition. Best
wishes to you and your family at the sergeants major academy.”
All three ended their speeches with the motto they hold dear as NCOs,
“By example.”
