Youth Services Center
Keeping youth busy, healthy this summer

Ballet is one of the activities that takes place most of the year.

The arrival of summer means the end of school, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of fun. There are plenty of sports and activities for children to take part in.

The post Youth Services Center is where these activities are coordinated. Children are able to take advantage of several recreational opportunities, not only during summer, but 10 months of the year. November and December the coordinators at the YSC take a break from organizing activities.

Children participating in post activities have the added advantage of being around others just like them.
“They get to meet other children, and they all have the same thing in common, their parents are in the military. It’s something they share,” military spouse Melody Pugh said.

Judo and ballet are two activities that take place January through October.

Robert Adkinson, head judo instructor, has been teaching children and adults on Fort Bliss for the last 18 years. “I started judo in 1974 and began teaching in 1986.” Judo classes for children ages 6-17, take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. Adult classes are Saturday at 9 a.m., and a self defense class for ages 12 and up on Mondays at 6 p.m.

Fort Bliss has two soccer seasons, each lasting two months. The first season starts in March and the second in September. Registration for soccer begins Aug. 1. There is also a soccer camp planned for Aug. 2-6.

Basketball begins in January and runs through March. Baseball and tee-ball begin in June and finish in July.
Cheerleading and football begin this month and last through October. The first day for football practice is July 19 at the Logan Heights Center.
