Community


Free concert
Shedaisy, the country-singing sister trio from Utah, will perform a free concert 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in Soldier Hall. No tickets will be issued; seating on a first-come, first-served basis. The group has requested to perform for our Fort Bliss Soldiers to show their gratitude for the military’s role in the War on Terrorism. SHeDAISY has recently released a new song and video called Come Home Soon, about soldiers serving in Iraq. Call 568-6741 or 568-2784 for details.

Host a Soldier
Every year hundreds of Soldiers in Advanced Individual Training at Fort Bliss spend Thanksgiving Day far from home and family. For more than 30 years, what would have been an uneventful day became a very special holiday, thanks to many El Paso area families. 
The Thanksgiving Adopt-A-Soldier program matches Soldiers with civilian and military families Thanksgiving Day. Nov. 25, 1st Bn., 56th ADA Regt. invites El Paso families to share their homes and the Thanksgiving holiday with a Soldier.
Interested families should contact Spc. Mara Bequis at the battalion S-3 office at 568-4256 during working hours. Please call no later than Nov. 17.  
 The Thanksgiving Home Visitation program will begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 25 at Stout Gymnasium, Bldg. 2930. Host families are invited to join us for a brief opening ceremony.  Following the ceremony, families will be introduced to their Soldiers for the day.
 Thanksgiving Day is one of those special days of the year spent sharing a meal with family and friends. Thanks to the warmth and generosity of so many El Paso families, Fort Bliss' Soldiers in training will be able to say that 2004’s Thanksgiving Day was an extra special one for them.

Country Junction
Come to the Country Junction’s Fall into Christmas special holiday event where handcrafted treasures, heirlooms and keepsakes will be sold. There will be doorprizes and refreshments. This event will be held Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Job fair

New family housing
Ask questions, make comments and take a look at what soon will be the new Fort Bliss. GMH/Benham/Centex is hosting an open house design review meeting at the Army Community Services Center, Bldg. 2494, from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 13. Refreshments and handouts will be available along with free on-sight child care. Reservations are required in advance, contact the Child Development Center's main office at 568-5689.

Thanksgiving assistance
Army Community Service is again sponsoring a Thanksgiving voucher program, which allows eligible Soldiers, retirees and their families to purchase food items at the Commissary to supplement their holiday meal. Nominations are considered on a case-by-case basis, with no rank restrictions. Soldiers with large families, recent loss of employment by the spouse and referrals by unit family readiness group leaders for families of deployed Soldiers are among the considerations. To be eligible, the following criteria must be met:
The first sergeant or commander must nominate the Soldier by completing and signing the nomination memorandum. Retirees may self-nominate by delivering the completed form to ACS.
The Soldier or retiree must be experiencing financial hardship.

Holiday bazaar
The Fort Bliss NCO Wives Club Holiday Bazaar is being held Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Stout Gym, corner of Cassidy Road and Airport. Admission will be $1 for adults 18 and over and free for children. The Holiday Bazaar will have food vendors and more than 100 craft vendors. The public is cordially invited and the gate will be open to the public.

Karaoke nights
The Fort Bliss Bowling Center hosts karaoke nights for MWR patrons and guests Thursday and Friday nights. Karaoke King takes to the stage at 7:30 p.m. and plays until 11 p.m. Thursday and 12:30 a.m. Friday in the center’s lounge. As a reminder, all non-active duty military guests, including family members and civilians, must be at least 21 to drink alcoholic beverages. For information, call 568-6272. CID offers reward
Between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., July 19 person(s) unknown, by unknown means, stole an IBM laptop from the mailroom of Bldg. 2471.

Leave program

Education meeting
The Texas Education Agency and Education Service Center-Region 19 will host a public meeting Oct. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 6611 Boeing to gather information on special education issues. Closure

USMC Birthday Ball

Voting update
El Paso County Department of Elections will not have a mobile voting site at the Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union, Oct. 28.  Mobile Voting will still be available at the AT&T Bldg., 12 Founders Blvd., Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the Mobile Voting site at AT&T, 12 Founders Street from Fort Bliss exit Fort Bliss on Cassidy Road (East) at Remagan Gate; turn left onto Airport Road;  at the next stop light turn right onto Founders Blvd;  AT&T is located on the right at the corner of Founders Blvd. and Zane Grey Street. Local voting information is available at the EPCounty.Com Web site, just click on elections. TACLANE Course
The DOIM’s COMSEC Manager will be hosting a 12-person, two-week, four-day, 32-hour course on the usage of the KG 175 TACLANE. The TACLANE is a low cost, key agile, in-line Encryptor that provides confidentiality, data integrity, and end-to- end authentication to protect data of all classification levels traversing Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Internet Protocol tactical and strategic networks. The class dates are Oct. 19-22, and 25, to be held at the Sergeants Major Academy Classroom # 312. All classes will start at 9 a.m. The course cost is $435 per student; payment will be coordinated through Margo Kosbab, DRM at 568-2351. Volunteers wanted

The Family Advocacy Program is looking for people who would like to help Kids on the Block puppet shows. It is a fun way to educate children about safety and social concerns. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn Bunraku puppetry. No previous puppet or drama experience is necessary. Retiree Appreciation Day

Temporary closure

Stress management
Feeling stressed out or overwhelmed about responsibilities at work or home? Do you know how to relax? Come to the Stress Management class at the Family Assistance Center and learn how to better manage stress. This one day class will help you understand how personality affects stress. We will teach how to create a custom stress management plan. Additionally, it will teach how to better deal with the difficult personalities of co-workers, family and friends. Participants will also be taught several stress management techniques based on the principals of Yoga and deep breathing. Farmer’s market
The Air Defense Artillery Association will present a Farmer’s Harvest Market at Old Fort Bliss Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Items on sale will include; apple cider, cake and pies from Stout Cider Mill, nuts from Ramirez Pecan Farm, Watson Gardens produce, Caby’s flowers, and pastries from Peter’s German Café. Youth bowlers program
The Fort Bliss Junior Bowlers Program 2004-2005 season has begun, but it is not too late to sign up. The league bowls each Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center. Bowling club

The Fort Bliss Knights Bowling Club is currently seeking new members. We are a co-ed bowling club and are also members of and compete in the local women’s and men’s kegler association tournaments in Western Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. We meet monthly at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center. Tournaments are usually every other month. Dues are $15 each month. Compliance training
Environmental compliance training will be held in Bldg. 622 the following dates;
Oct. 19 - 20; Nov. 23 - 24; Dec. 14 - 15 (subject to holiday schedules); Jan. 25 - 26; Feb. 22 - 23; March 22 - 23; April 19 - 20; May; 24 - 25; June 21- 22; July 19 - 20; Aug. 23- 24; Sept. 20 and 21.
Daily training schedule will be: day 1 - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Day 2 9 a.m. to noon.
There will be an exam at end of the course; with a passing grade a certificate will be awarded.

Space history volunteers
Volunteers are wanted at the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo. A volunteer recruitment session is scheduled for Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the museum’s Hubbard Space Science Education Building.
No experience is necessary, the museum will train you. During the recruitment session potential volunteers will be given an outline of their responsibilities and available positions throughout the museum complex. Volunteers serve as: explainer/demonstrators; tour guides/greeters; telephone receptionists; theater specialists and special project volunteers.
In order to be placed on an active status as a museum volunteer, candidates are required to donate a minimum of two hours per week to the museum. Volunteers may work out individual schedules with coordinating staff at the museum.

Library hours
Mickelsen Community Library will be closed Saturday, and will reopen Wednesday. The Mickelsen ADA School Library will be closed Friday, and re-open Tuesday. For details, call 568-3089.

Teen center

Fort Bliss now has a teen center, located in Bldg. 635 (the old thrift shop), the building is a work in progress. Upgrades to the interior such as electrical repairs, sprinkler systems, fire alarms and paint were completed. The remaining upgrades to the building will be completed by Fort Bliss teens and various other youth groups. The building was turned over to them at an open house held Sept. 25. Future work will be completed weekends and after school. The goal is to have an official grand opening in the near future. However, until then the facility will still be open Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. For information call 568-5437 or 568-1211.  

Microchip your pet
The Fort Bliss Veterinary Treatment Facility offers microchips for privately-owned animals to help military pet owners meet the requirements of Fort Bliss Regulation 190-4 Protection and Control of Animals. Under the regulation, microchips are required for all pets living in government housing on Fort Bliss. Microchips are a safe, reliable, permanent means of identification for an animal. The microchip is injected under the pet’s skin, like a vaccination, and is as fast and relatively painless as a vaccine. The cost of the microchip is $22. Taco Tuesday
The Centennial NCO Club on Biggs Airfield introduces its “all-you-can-eat” Taco Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m.  The evening will feature an assortment of hard-shell and soft beef and chicken tacos, rice, beans, chips and salsa, variety of desserts, and a beverage. Halloween parties 

The Fort Bliss Bowling Center will host a Halloween costume contest and party Oct. 30. Bowl for just $1 a game from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The costume contest will take place at 8:30 p.m. in the center’s lounge. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in two divisions: a youth division for ages 12 and under and a division for individuals 13 and up. First place winners in each division will receive a bowling ball and bag. Partiers are then invited to stay for center’s state-of-the-art sound and glow-in-the-dark light show, Thunder Alley, which begins at 10 p.m. For information, call 568-6272.
Metro Station, a Nightclub for all Enlisted Ranks, located in the lower level of the Centennial, will also host a Halloween costume contest and party Oct. 30. There will be no cover from 9 to 11:59 p.m., after which a $4 cover will be charged from midnight to 5 a.m. Complimentary snacks will be served through midnight. Parenting class
The Army Community Services Center is offering Parenting Classes. The classes are free and available to Soldiers, retirees, DoD civilians and family members. The classes offered are Early Childhood ages Birth to 6 years, every Tuesday for six weeks starting this week from 1 to 3 p.m. The School-age/Teens Classes will begin Oct. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. Free childcare is provided during the classes. Volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed at the Old Fort during the school day to help demonstrate to school children what life was like in 1857 at Fort Bliss and El Paso. The children learn about the cultural lifestyle exchange between El Pasoans and Fort Bliss Soldiers of 1857. Areas of concentration for volunteering are blacksmithing, pottery-making, leather-making, carpentry, a Soldier’s life in the barracks, home life and clothing of the time period. Enchilada dinner

Chapin High School’s Sapphire Dance Team is hosting an enchilada dinner today, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $6, which includes three enchiladas, beans, rice, and a sopapilla. The dinners, catered by Casita Linda, can be picked up in the school dance room. All proceeds raised go toward competition and travel expenses. Call ahead and ask for Coach Jordan, 832-6730, to reserve your plates.

More access to FVAP
In response to concerns from citizens residing overseas, the Department of Defense announced today that access to the Federal Voting Assistance Program Web site at http://www.fvap.gov has been modified to further increase the number of internet service providers able to access the site.
DoD Web protection measures are necessary in order to protect the DoD network. While the changes will make the FVAP Web site accessible to most users, it does not automatically guarantee 100 percent access to the site. There are many networks that make up the Internet, and some of these networks may employ independent protection mechanisms that prevent communication with the system.

Military Night at UTEP
Fort Bliss “Military Night” at UTEP is Nov. 13, 7:05 p.m. kickoff, at the Sun Bowl — UTEP vs. Rice, sponsored by Raytheon. The UTEP Athletic Department will honor all veterans and active duty military this night. A special “buy one, get one free” coupon provided by Raytheon will be made available to all military personnel as well as local veteran groups. For information, call 568-4601.

CFC
The 2004 Combined Federal Campaign is scheduled for the month of October. Campaigns are most effective when the CFC message is carried to the lowest levels and all personnel understand the true purpose of the campaign. Many charitable organizations rely on contributions to the CFC to continue the good work they do.

The U.S. Army is looking for highly motivated Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen to fill its warrant officer ranks. Positions are open in all 45 specialties if you qualify. Applicants with less than 12 years active federal service are encouraged to apply.

Internet coupons
The Commissary is again accepting computer-generated Internet coupons with a couple of requirements to guard against fraud, Defense Commissary Agency officials announced. Coupons must have a bar code that store checkouts can scan and they cannot be for a free product. Photocopied or facsimile-generated coupons remain unacceptable at all commissaries. Internet grocery coupons can be accessed through the agency’s Web site, www.commissaries.com.

DPWL reminder
We want to remind everyone of the watering policy on post which changed earlier this spring. You may water grass any three days of the week that you choose excluding Monday. In keeping with the spirit of water conservation we ask that you water between 5 and 9 a.m., and 6 to 10 p.m. This schedule is in force May through September.  April and October, limit your watering to one time per week observing the same times. November through March, water one time per month when the temperature is above freezing. You should limit watering to no more than 45 minutes on any one area. For information, call 568-2823.

Bravo!
The United States Army Community and Family Support Center, Army Entertainment Division is pleased to announce the production for the FY05 winter tour of BRAVO! Army Theatre Touring Company. BRAVO! is an all Soldier touring theatrical company that will tour deployment areas in Southwest Asia to include Kuwait, Afghanistan and location in the far East to include Japan and Korea bringing the finest in the theatrical arts to Soldiers and other DoD deployed service members. This winter, BRAVO! will present The Complete History of America, 600 years of history in 6,000 seconds. The production will rehearse and open at Wallace Theatre, home of the Army Soldier Show at Fort Belvoir, Va. Interested active duty Soldiers should submit a complete packet to: CFCS Army Entertainment Division, Attention: BRAVO! Auditions, PO Box 439, Fort Belvoir, Va. 22060, no later than Oct. 15. All nominations must include the following: Name, rank, SSN, unit address, duty phone, ETS date and a video cassette (1/2 inch VHS) of performer acting, singing and dancing skills. Music workshop

Centurion Gospel Service and Sage Hall presents a music workshop and concert – featuring the legendary James Bignon, gospel recording artist who is a strong, vivacious baritone, and has established himself as one of the gospel industry’s best. Church choir members, singers and musicians of the Fort Bliss and El Paso community are invited to join the workshop at Sage at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 5-7. There is a workshop suggested donation of $10, which will include workshop packets and music from Bignon. Battle of the bands
The United States Army Community and Family Support Center are looking for bands to compete for the 2004 Department of the Army level finals. Each region is afforded two entries (alternates are encouraged). Competition award certificate amounts are: 1st Place - $8,000; 2nd Place - $5,000; 3rd Place - $3,000; and 4th Place - $2,000. Monetary awards are presented to the winning band’s installation entertainment, BOSS, or recreation programs. Guidelines to be considered for participation are definition, eligibility, performance, awards, and escorts. The semi finals/finals competition will be conducted Oct. 23 at Fort Eustis, Va. English as second language
Army Community Service offers English as a second language class Monday and Wednesday. Classes are from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Participants should call 568-1132 or 569-7762 to register for the class. Free childcare will be provided for participants. Children must be registered at the Child Development Center and participants must book their own childcare reservations by calling 568-1132. Classes are for ID cardholders age 18 and older.

EFMP meeting

Domestic Violence affects military readiness and families as well. It is a fact that children who witness domestic violence at home can become abusers themselves. Youth Services classes

Fort Bliss Youth Services offers classes in Ju Jitsu and Judo.
Ju Jitsu is a Japanese art used by the ancient samurai. It uses various wristlocks, arm bars, strikes, and other off balancing techniques to defeat an opponent. Ju Jitsu is taught as a basic defensive art with the first rule being, there are no rules. The techniques are taught in blocks of ten and class is structured like a reverse pyramid. Classes are Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Ages for the class are 11 and up and the cost is $20.
Judo is a Japanese art that uses balance and leverage to defeat an opponent. Judo has its beginning in Ju Jitsu but is taught as a sport. All students are taught how to fall prior to going into the trrowing techniques. Students are taught the three basics falls; back, side, and front rolls. After each technique, the student is taught a throw that reinforces that fall. Classes are conducted using basic Japanese terminology, all students are required following basic discipline and showing respect to everyone. Classes offer for ages 6-16 Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cost for the class is $20. And for ages 17 and up on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. cost is $15. For information call 568-kids.

Halloween dance
VFW Post 5615 will host a Halloween dance Oct. 30 from 8 p.m. to midnight at 4810 Pershing Drive. Free door prizes and everyone is invited.

Spanish classes

Army Community Service offers Conversational Spanish classes on Fridays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the conference room. Participants should call 568-1132 or 569-7762 to register for the class. Free childcare is provided for participants. Children must be registered at the Child Development Center and participants must book their own childcare reservations by calling 568-1132. Classes are for I. D. cardholder’s age 18 and older.

Ardovino’s Farmer’s Market
Ardovino’s Desert Crossing Farmer’s Market now has apples of all varieties along with other locally grown vegetables, roasted long green chilies, fruits, berries, nuts, herbs, organics, baked goods nd artisan wares.
Music, ready to eat food and drinks are available in an ambiant atmosphere. The market is open every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. For information and directions, call 505-589-0653.

Sign language classes

Army Community Service Relocation Assistance offers free Sign Language Classes for adults (18 years of age or older) Monday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Army Community Service Bldg. 2494. The classes have begun and go through April 20, 2005, (the class schedule for the year is available at Army Community Service). Childcare for students is free at the Child Development Center. Children must be registered at the Child Development Center and reservations must be made by the student. For information, call 568-7088.
