JTF-6 stays unbeaten with win over Beaumont Master Sgt. Steve
Miller
Benjamin Smith tossed three touchdown passes and Joint Task Force 6 got defensive stops at key times in an 18-14 flag-football victory Monday night over William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Stout Field. The win kept JTF-6 unbeaten at 5-0, while WBAMC dropped to 3-2. Two of Smith’s scoring passes went to the speedy Albert Luna, who also greatly helped his team defensively by registering several sacks against WBAMC quarterback John McLendon. “They had a quicker rusher than we did today,” admitted WBAMC Coach Shaun Bennett, referring to Luna. “He had several sacks against us and made it tough.” Luna also snared what proved to be the winning touchdown pass when he caught a quick slant over the middle from Smith and outraced Beaumont defenders to the end zone to complete the 14-yard scoring play midway through the second half. “It was a designed play – a hard slant,” Luna said. “Smitty told me run a quick slant-in, and he just hit me as I came across the middle.” Smith found Marco Medina from 35 yards out for the only score of the first half to stake JTF-6 to a 6-0 lead at intermission. They would double their margin on their first possession of the second half when Luna snared a 30-yard scoring pass from Smith. Both conversion attempts failed, putting JTF-6 up 12-0 early in the second half. WBAMC closed the gap moments later when McLendon found Greg Austin from 35 yards away. They also missed an attempted two-point conversion, making it 12-6. Then came Luna’s game-clinching score on the 14-yard slant to restore the 12-point margin. JTF-6 missed the conversion again, and it was 18-6. But WBAMC would not go quietly. McLendon heaved a 45-yard bomb to Everett Dukes to pull Beaumont within 18-12. McLendon appeared to aggravate his ailing ribs on the throw and gave way to Dukes for the two-point conversion attempt. Dukes hit Fernando Morales several yards short of the goal line, but Morales twisted his way into the end zone to close the gap to 18-14. After WBAMC held JTF-6 on downs, Beaumont had the final two plays of the game to try to score from their own 5-yard-line. McLendon’s pass fell incomplete at midfield on the first play, and Luna capped his stellar evening by sacking McLendon on the final play. “We were trying to get to midfield, and then go for the end zone after that,” Bennett said of his team’s strategy on the final series. “The problem was we were stuck at our own 5-yard-line.” JTF-6, which was re-designated JTF-North during a Sept. 28 ceremony at Biggs Army Airfield, will continue to use the JTF-6 moniker until the completion of the current sports season, officials said..
