There will be plenty of activity at Biggs Army Airfield starting this
weekend — volunteers begin setting up the field for next weekend’s
23rd Annual Amigo Airsho.
Airsho organizers have been planning and coordinating for months and
have lined up some new, exciting performers and activities for this
year’s show. They have also invited a number of crowd pleasers
from years past.
This year’s aerial show includes the Red Baron Pizza Squadron,
Michael Mancuso Klein Tools Aerobatics, P-47 Heritage Flight, Sky Dive
El Paso Jump Team, and several aircraft from the U.S. Air Force; the
Air Force Thunderbirds, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon and the A-10
Thunderbolt. The Dawn Patrol consisting of four L-39 European trainers
will kick things off each morning.
On the ground is the Firefighters Challenge, the Quad Jump, Titanic
Giant Slide, Obstacle Course, First Airborne Parachute Drop and Beach
Ball Challenge to name a few.
The Scott Firefighters Combat Challenge will hold its United States
National Championship competition, during the Airsho, bringing firefighters
from throughout the nation to compete for bragging rights. Fort Bliss’
own fire department has two teams, one male and one female.
The best and the bravest will battle dressed head to toe in “full
bunker gear” and breathing apparatus simulating the physical demands
of real life firefighting.
The KidSho activities include space balls, space spins, simulators,
jumping balloons, etc. The WheelSho features over 75 classic and specialty
cars representing all the local car clubs.
Displays include NASA with their “out of this world and into their
reach” aircraft, such as the Guppy, an F-18, 747, G2-STA, T-38
and a C-135. The Homeland Security exhibition includes the U.S. Border
Patrol, U.S.
Customs, El Paso Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s
Department. The War Eagle’s Museum of Santa Teresa, N.M., will
exhibit four of their antique warbirds. Fort Bliss will display their
Patriot Missile System, Stinger and Avenger.
The gates open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aerial activities begin at noon.
For safety reasons, no pets or smoking are authorized on the field.
Everything happens at Biggs Army Airfield Oct. 23-24, and parking will
be on Biggs. Due to construction and mobilization efforts, Fort Bliss
personnel with post decals should use the Carrington Street bridge to
access Biggs. The general public will use the Biggs Main Gate. Traffic
control and parking volunteers will direct you to the closest parking.
Tickets are available at all Good Time Stores and at the Fort Bliss
ITR Office, 568-7506. The Amigo Chalet tickets, which include food,
drink, shade and front row seats, can only be purchased through the
Amigo Airsho.
For more information on the Airsho or to purchase Amigo Chalet tickets,
