HHB, 108th overhauls C-1-7 ADA in second half

Master Sgt. Steve Miller
Public Affairs Chief

Kevin Fenton tossed four second-half touchdown passes Tuesday night and the defense pitched a shutout after intermission to lead HHB, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade to a 41-24 come-from-behind win over Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 7th ADA at Stout Field.

The victory moved HHB, 108th to 7-1 this season, with Charlie slipping to 1-6, but you couldn’t tell which record belonged to which team in the first half.

Michael Springer caught a 7-yard scoring pass from Deuce Nichols to stake Charlie to a 6-0 lead on the first series of the game before HHB, 108th answered when Fenton heaved a 45-yard strike to Caine Bassett on their first possession. HHB, 108th made its two-point conversion to make it 8-6.

But Charlie got the next two scores as Nichols found Joshua Chairez from 45 yards out and Patrick Main from 26 yards away. Despite failing on both conversion attempts, Charlie held an 18-8 lead midway through the first half.

HHB, 108th closed within 18-16 when Fenton connected with Val Cornejo on a 45-yard score and a two-point conversion, but Charlie had time for a late first-half score of their own when Jeff Daniels hauled in a Nichols pass that was tipped to him in the end zone. Charlie missed the conversion, but they held a 24-16 lead at halftime.

“I scouted this team all last week, and they were giving up short yardage,” Charlie Coach Hector Soto said. “They figured us out in the second half. They knew what we were doing and defended it.”

Indeed, HHB, 108th blanked Charlie 25-0 in the second half while Fenton threw four more scoring passes. He connected with Cornejo from 15 yards out, Isaiah Davis on a 45-yard bomb, Brian Hague from 20 yards away and Victor Canales on a 5-yard toss.

“I told them to cut down on the mental lapses – to stick to the principles and parameters of the defense – and the offense will come,” Fenton said he told his team as they trailed at halftime. “I think we’re smoothing out the rough edges, and things are starting to come together for us.”
