Bliss to host Retiree Appreciation Day

Capt. Enrique T. Vasquez
Public Affairs Office

The 2004 Fort Bliss Retiree Appreciation Day will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy at Biggs Army Airfield.

The event is sponsored by the local El Paso chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and is intended to keep local retirees and their families informed on current legislative issues that may have an impact on their benefits.

The MOAA is operated exclusively to benefit members of the uniformed services – active duty, former and retired, National Guard, Reserve, their families and survivors. MOAA is dedicated to preserving servicemembers earned entitlements and to maintaining a strong national defense.

Six out of 10 retired officers belong to MOAA, as do more than 30,000 active-duty officers nationwide. The local MOAA chapter boasts more than 700 current members.

Hosting this year’s event will be retired Maj. Gen. Edward Greer, president of the Fort Bliss Retiree Advisory Council. Scheduled guest speakers include Maj. Gen. Michael A. Vane, Fort Bliss commanding general.

This year’s keynote speaker will be retired U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Warren G. Schneeweis, director, Benefits Information Department, MOAA.

“Capt. Scheeweis will address updated legislative measures and bills that effect military retirees,” said Abel F. Duarte, Fort Bliss retiree service officer.

“Among the important topics discussed during this year’s Retiree Appreciation Day will be changes to the Survivors Benefit Plan, Combat Related Special Compensation and Concurrent Retirement Disability Payments,” said Duarte.

“Events like this help keep the retiree community informed on current legislative issues that effect their benefits,” said Duarte.
