Class 55 proclaims their mission

Master Sgt. Lisa Hunter
USASMA Class 55 PAO

USASMA students show off their talent and their faith providing musical entertainment at the Class 55 Prayer Breakfast.

The U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 55 students gathered at the Centennial Club for a time of physical and spiritual nourishment during Class 55’s Prayer Breakfast, Friday.

More than 100 students, staff, faculty and guests came together for the rousing spiritual event. During the breakfast, students read from Scriptures and joined together in prayer. The event also featured the incredible musical talents of the USASMA Choir, who set the uplifting tone for the entire program with their lively and uplifting songs.

One of USASMA’s own faculty advisors, Sgt. Maj. Artez Lamar, lent his musical talents to the program with his impromptu performance. Lamar sang “Praise the Difference,” accompanied by keyboardist and Class 55 student, Sgt. Maj. Elijah Jones. Lamar and Jones make up half of the Gospel quartet, The Gospel Sons, who have just cut their first CD, “Wait on the Lord.” The CD is currently in limited distribution.

After their musical performances, the audience was ready for a good sermon, and Class 55 student, Sgt. Maj. Michael Walker, didn’t let them down. Walker talked to the assembled guests about how we all have a mission and a purpose.

“Whatever good work God started in you, God is going to finish,” Walker told the assembled guests. “In the 21st Century, we have some challenges. When school is out, we’re going out there. You’re going to have to make some decisions that affect children’s lives. You’ve got to be ready for that mission.

“You have a mission and a purpose,” Walker said. “A lot are called, but few are chosen. You are chosen.” Walker, an Ordnance Soldier, is an ordained Baptist minister. He explained that we are all works in progress and having a purpose will help you evaluate your progress. “I’m not all that I’m supposed to be, but I’m more than I used to be, thanks to God.”

Walker finished his speech to a standing ovation. “Class 55, we are going to leave a legacy here in El Paso. They are going to say, “There were some God-fearing people here that had a purpose and a mission.”
