Orphanage needs help
USASMA Class 55 comes to rescue of needy home

Students from USASMA Class 55 offload lumber while children from New Life Home Children’s Orphanage watch. The orphanage was destroyed during the heavy rains that fell September.

Disaster has struck twice. This is the second time in two years that the New Life Home Children’s Orphan-age has flooded. This time the home was destroyed. The orphanage has 14 special needs children, ranging from Downs Syndrome to severe physical handicaps that need help from the community.

Unlike other children’s programs, this program is a non-profit organization (Tax ID# 74-2477748). They receive no funding and operate strictly from donations. This is the second time USASMA students have responded to the flooding at the orphanage.

The United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 55, has been volunteering their time and energy to help clean and rebuild the orphanage’s home due to the flooding that occurred Sept. 25 and 26.

In response to the call for assistance, a local El Paso businessman generously donated an old farmhouse, barn and land — out of the flood zone — to move the special needs children into. Today, three weeks after the flood, their old home is still under water.

So far, Class 55 has helped raise an abundance of donated food, clothes and furniture. USASMA students have assisted in collecting and delivering donated items. Class 55 would like to extend special thanks to Lowe’s, Fort Bliss Commissary and Sam’s Club of El Paso for their generous donations.

A USASMA student and volunteers clear brush and trash from property donated to the orphanage by a local El Pasoan.

The children are in immediate need of assistance, any amount of help will be of great value. Since everything was damaged in the flood we are asking for donations on any of the following items:

• 48 Sheets of 4’x 8’ x ?’ Wafer board (cannot use drywall with the children)
• 11 Sheets of 4’x 8’ x 1” Styrofoam Insulation boards
• 650 sq. ft of rolled fiberglass insulation
The orphanage needs Soldiers and civilians willing to donate their time and specialty skills — such as carpentry, electrician and plumbing — to help the rebuilding effort. Additional help to clear the property is also needed so these special-needs children can safely play on the property.

Together we can rebuild their home one piece at a time and make a difference for these children.
