El Paso Veterans Day parade
The annual Veterans Day Parade will be Saturday at 10 a.m. from the corner of Myrtle and Florence Streets and winds through downtown.  Best viewing is at San Jacinto Plaza. Numerous veterans organizations will have floats and vehicles on display.  Area high school JROTC and bands will also participate. Fort Bliss will also participate with Soldiers and a Patriot Launcher from 2-43 ADA, 108th ADA Brigade marching, the all-service color guard from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy and the Marine Corps Detachment, the 62nd Army Band, an Avenger from 2-6 ADA and a MP HMMWV provided by the 978th Military Police Company.

DRT luncheon
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, El Paso Rio Grande Chapter will meet Nov. 12 at the El Paso Club at 11:30 a.m. Reservations must be made by Friday. Checks for $14 must be sent to Joy Bixler, 1800 N. Stanton, #902, 79912-3539 by Friday. Mayor Sue Overstreet will tell about the amazing history of the Texas Rangers from 1823-1900. For information call 778-2735.

Host a Soldier
The 1st Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery Regiment invites El Paso families to share their homes and Thanksgiving holiday with a Soldier. Each year hundreds of Soldiers in Advanced Individual Training at Fort Bliss spend Thanksgiving Day far from home and family. The Thanksgiving Adopt-A-Soldier Program matches Soldiers with civilian and military families Thanksgiving Day. The Thanksgiving Home Visitation Program will begin at 9 a.m., Nov. 25, at Stout Gymnasium, Bldg. 2930. Host families are invited to join us for a brief opening ceremony. Following the ceremony, families will be introduced to their Soldiers for the day. Interested families should contact Spc. Bequis during working hours at 568-4256. Call no later than Nov. 17. When you call, we will need your name, telephone number, and the number of Soldiers you are willing to host in your home.

St. Barbara’s Day Ball
All Soldiers and members of the Fort Bliss community are invited to join us as we celebrate the Patron Saint of Artillery at the 2004 St. Barbara’s Day Ball, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m., at the Centennial Club, Biggs Army Airfield. Las Cruces Veterans Day parade
Come out and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Las Cruces Veterans Day parade Saturday, 9 a.m. along Church Street. The parade will honor the 50th anniversary of the first Veterans Day parade with veterans of all wars. Dr. Gerald Thomas will serve as grand marshall and Congressman Steve Pearce as the keynote speaker. There will be a fly-over of vintage aircraft from the Warbirds Museum and helicopters from the New Mexico RAID teams, military units, marching bands, veteran organizations, queens and princesses, and vintage vehicles. Trophies will be awarded for best color guard, marching band, drill team, youth organization, vintage military vehicle, non military marching unit, special entry and most patriotic display. Genealogical meeting
Wally Thomson will discuss “How to set up a Genealogical Program Using a Word Processor” at El Paso Genealogical Society Meeting, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m., at Pebble Hills Regional Command Center, 10780 Pebble Hills. Election of officers will also held.
Thompson has been a member of the society for several years and will bring six years of experience with computers to the El Paso membership. Visitors are welcome. For information call 778-4004.

Audie Murphy induction
The Fort Bliss Center Command Sergeant Major and Fort Bliss Chapter Sergeant Audie Murphy Club cordially invite you to the Sergeant Audie Murphy Induction Ceremony today at 1:30 p.m., in Soldier Hall.
The host for this ceremony is Fort Bliss Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Michael A.Vane and the guest speaker is the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, Command Sgt. Maj. John D. Sparks.

Military Night at UTEP
Fort Bliss Military Night at UTEP is Nov. 13, with a 7:05 p.m. kickoff at the Sun Bowl Stadium. The game will be UTEP vs. Rice, sponsored by Raytheon. The UTEP Athletic Department will honor veterans and active military on this night.  
Fort Bliss will bring static displays such as the Patriot launcher, a Sentinel Radar, MP units and MARK-19 grenade launcher. The 62nd Army Band will play the National Anthem and will march on the field along with the Fort Bliss Color Guard and the Bagpipers. The military displays will be at UTEP by 3 p.m. for everyone to come and greet the Soldiers who work at Fort Bliss.

Tree dedication
A bur oak tree will be dedicated today at 8:30 a.m. in front of Bldg. 128, White Sands Missile Range, N.M., as a memorial to Army Spc. Lori Piestewa. Piestewa was a member of the 507th Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss and the first American Indian servicewoman killed in action in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her parents and children are expected to attend and participate in the ceremony. This event is part of White Sands Missile Range’s Native American Month observance. It is sponsored by the White Sands chapter of the American Society of Military Comptrollers. For information, call the missile range’s Public Affairs Office at 505-678-1134.

Financial readiness

Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program hosts a monthly coupon social. Participants are able to exchange the coupons they do not need for the ones they want. We also share money saving ideas to help you stretch your budget. The dates for the coupon social are: 1:30 p.m., Nov. 22 and Dec. 20.  If these dates do not fit your schedule the coupon box is located at ACS, 2494 Ricker Road, in the media room.  Donations of coupons are always welcome. Operation Holiday Cheer
Fort Bliss Operation Holiday Cheer will hold a 62nd Army Band holiday concert Dec. 10, 5 p.m. at Sage Hall. Welcome the holidays with music and carols. There will also be the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Chapel One. There will be refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus.

FBOC advisory meeting
The Next Fort Bliss Officers Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for Wed-nesday at 3 p.m., located at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club. The October meeting was cancelled due to the Off-Site. For information call 568-1883.

EFMP meeting 
The Exceptional Family Member Manager and the Army Community Service would like to take this opportunity to invite Exceptional Family Members and/or their families to our EFMP Support Group meeting Nov. 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the ACS, Bldg. 2494.
A representative from the WBAMC-Pediatric Clinic, Dr. Bilynsky, pediatric-neurologist, will be giving a presentation to the EFMP Support Group on Autism. Childcare will be provided the night of the meeting at the Main Child Development Center, Bldg. 1730. The CDC needs to know if your child has any special needs to be considered, when you call to sign up at the ACS, please indicate these. The deadline to register for childcare is Nov. 15. WTCC toy run
The West Texas Confederation of Clubs is sponsoring its 22nd annual Toy Run Sunday. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the International Truck Driving School at 141 Quinella in Sunland Park, N.M. The entry fee per person is $7, plus a toy valued at $5 or more. Proceeds benefit underprivileged children in the El Paso area. 5-52 ADA fashion show
The 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery sponsors its Team Deuce Fashion Show at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Centennial Club. The suggested donation is $20, which includes food. For information, call 569-5669 or 568-6467.

Life after the Army
Army Community Service is sponsoring a seminar about planning for the future entitled “Life After the Army” at the Community Services Center, Bldg. 2494, Ricker Rd., from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 1. Representatives of the El Paso Veterans Center, Social Security Admini-stration and Department of Veterans Affairs are scheduled to make presentations. Military ID card holders and civilian personnel are invited to attend. For information, call 568-7088.

Flu vaccine
The El Paso VA has a limited supply of flu vaccine. It is available to veterans who are 65 years or older and currently enrolled with the VA, and 65 years or younger with chronic lung disorders, heart disorders, chronic metabolic diseases (including diabetes), kidney diseases, blood disorders (such as sickle cell anemia), or weakened immune systems, including persons with HIV/AIDS and are currently enrolled with the VA.
Shots will be given at the VA from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the first floor. Veterans not included in these two groups may contact the VA facility for updates on vaccine availability by call 564-6100. The El Paso VA is located at 5001 N. Piedras St.

Walk-in vaccine clinic
To increase accessibility for our clients, the Fort Bliss Vet Clinic is offering a new service — walk-in vaccine clinics on Wednesday. Now you don’t need an appointment to get vaccinations, micro-chips, heartworm testing or deworming for your pet. The new service starts Nov. 17 and will run from 8:30-11:30 a.m., and from 1-3:30 p.m. Services will be on a first-come/first-served basis. Please note that the walk-in service is for Wellness care only — owners still need to make an appointment to get their animal seen for something other than vaccines, micro-chips, deworming, or heartworm or feline leukemia testing. The Vet Clinic is located at Bldg. 6077 on Carter Road between Van Horne Housing area and the Bowling Alley.

Holiday gift certificates

Now is the time to get the jump on that holiday gift for that someone special. You might think about giving an MWR gift certificate. This holiday season, MWR is offering gift certificates for the Centennial NCO Club, Fort Bliss Officers’ Club, Underwood Gold Complex, the Golden Tee Restaurant and the Fort Bliss Bowling Center.

FBOC family italian nights

The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club introduces its “all-you-can-eat” Family Italian Night Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will feature a variety of pastas and sauces, meatballs, lasagna, salad bar, assorted desserts and a beverage. Officers’ Club members pay only $8.95 for adults and $4.50 for children. Nonmembers pay a 20 percent surcharge.

Centennial Taco Tuesdays
The Centennial NCO Club on Biggs Airfield introduces its “all-you-can-eat” Taco Tuesdays Nov. 16 from 6-9 p.m. The evening will feature an assortment of hard-shell and soft beef and chicken tacos, rice, beans, chips and salsa, variety of desserts, and a beverage. Margaritas and import beer will also be available for purchase. Pay only $7.95 for adults and $4 for children. Bring your appetite and chow down during the Centennial’s Taco Tuesday. New gym flooring

Two MWR Physical Fitness Centers will be receiving new Mondo flooring systems in each facility’s weight rooms. Work on Stout Gym’s selectorized room, cardio loft, free weight room, leg room, and dumb bell room, as well as Logan Gym’s weight room will begin Monday. Rooms will be closed one at a time to accommodate guest usage. A schedule of projected date closures per room will be posted at each facility. MWR and the sports staff apologize for any inconvenience. For information, call 568-4508. 

Kids on the Block

The Kids on the Block Puppet shows are available for performances free of charge. The performances cover a variety of topics such as bicycle safety, school safety, vehicle safety, child abuse, bullying and deployments. Shows can be performed for schools, FRG events/meetings, youth groups, daycare centers, and scout troops. Toddler, infant playgroups

The Family Assistance Center conducts Toddler and Infant Playgroups on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s of each month. The Toddler Playgroup ranges from ages 18 1/2 months to 3 years of age at the Logan Child Development Center from 10 a.m.-noon. The Infant Playgroup is offered at the Youthplex on Fort Bliss every Thursday from 10-11 a.m. This is an excellent way to interact with your children and meet other parents within the Fort. Water aerobics class
Water aerobics will begin Tuesday at Replica Pool. Tonay Gainey will teach classes Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. For a great, no stress on the joints aerobics class, this is the one. Call Doug Briggs at 568-6458 for information. 

Brass Bartending
Join us Friday for Brass Bartending at the Officers’ Club. 11th ADA Bde. will bartend in the Down Under, with Col. Randy A. Buhidar and staff serving drinks. The promotion will continue through December, allowing battalion and brigade commanders to act as bartenders for one night, with all tips contributed to the appropriate unit fund. For information call 568-3415.

Sibling class

The Family Assistance Center is offering an Expectant Sibling Class Nov. 17 at the Family Assistance Center. The center is located at 2494 Ricker Road, next to the Stayton Movie Theatre. This class is to educate parents on how to prevent and reduce sibling rivalry. It also educates children ages 3 to 8 years old on what to expect from a new baby. Upon completion of the class they will receive a certificate. For iformation, call 568-1132.

Bench Press Championships
Fort Bliss will host the 2005 Amateur Athletic Union Military Bench Press Championships. The date for this meet has yet to be determined. Call Doug Briggs at 568-6458 for information. 

Baby care 101 class

The Army Community Services Center is offering Baby Care 101 Class. The class will be held at the ACS building Friday from 2-3 p.m.. The topic presented is infant massage. This is an excellent technique to use to calm a baby when they are hard to soothe. For more information, call Esylen Stephens/Linda Ness at 568-1132.

Mickelsen Library

Mickelsen Library currently hosts “Read Me a Story” every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. for children 2 to 5 years of age in the children’s room of the library. The library is also presenting “Family Story Time” for 2 to 6 year olds, from 10:30-11 a.m. Parents or guardians must stay with their child through the duration of story-time, which will last about 30 minutes. Each week will feature a new theme, and story readings will include some movement, singing or crafts. Mickelsen Library is located in the E Wing, lower level of Hinman Hall, Bldg. 2. CDS Saturday openings

The Child Development Center provides special hours of operation on Saturdays at its main location in Bldg. 1730 on Haan Rd. Hours are 1 p.m. to midnight. Cost for payday weekend care is $2.50 per hour; $2 for Tier I. Children, ages 2 months to 12 years, are eligible for the care. For information, call 568-5689.

Rod & Gun Club

The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club is located in Bldg. 3730 off Railroad Drive and Deer on Roy Johnson Lane. The kitchen opens Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The facility offers trap, skeet, rifle, pistol, archery, black powder, and plinking ranges, and a five stand sporting clays range, pro shop, snack bar (open weekends) and banquet facilities. Concealed carry classes and instruction in shotgun, rifle and pistol reloading are also available. The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club is open to the public. For information call 565-4867.

Domestic violence presentations
Domestic violence affects military readiness and families as well. It is a fact that children who witness domestic violence at home can become abusers themselves. Now is the time to schedule your unit’s annual domestic violence prevention and awareness brief. To schedule your Unit or FRG for a presentation call Joe Crawford with ACS at 568-4878.

CG’s Payday bowling tourney
As part of MWR’s monthly Post Payday Activities, the commanding general would like to invite would like to invite all Team Bliss military and civilians to participate to participate in a three-game bowling tournament Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. The cost is $1 per game with no charge for shoe rental. A limited number of spaces are available. Prizes will be awarded to the first through fourth place individuals with high game and high series. Interested individuals must sign up no later than 4 p.m. today. The CG endorses the activities to promote team building and camaraderie among community members and to serve as a pleasant departure from the regular workday. Retreat ceremony

Fort Bliss Soldiers will conduct a Veterans Day Retreat Ceremony at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Memorial Circle. The ceremony will be hosted by Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Michael A. Vane and will honor veterans of the past, present and those still serving our country.
During the ceremony an all service color guard will present the national colors and individual service flags. Soldiers from the 6th ADA Bde. will lower the U.S. flag during the retreat ceremony. The 62nd Army Band will provide patriotic music for the event.
El Paso area veterans organizations, individuals, family members the Fort Bliss community and the public are invited. Veteran organizations are encouraged to bring their colors to the ceremony.

Hours of operation
Central Registration and FCC has moved to the ITR Bldg. 1743 on Victory Ave. Hours of operation for Central Registration are 7 a.m-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours of FCC are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Outdoor Adventures hours of operation are 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Fort Bliss Information, Ticketing and Registration Office is open from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, closing for lunch from 1-2 p.m., and closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Free concerts

The Musical Ambassadors of the Army, the Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus, the Jazz Ambassadors and volunteers of the U.S. Army Field Band from Fort Meade, Md., will perform a concert at Magoffin Auditorium, UTEP campus, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
A Patriotic Concert by the 62nd Army Band will be held at the El Paso Scottish Rite Temple, 301 West Missouri, Nov. 19, 7 p.m. The 62nd Army Band provides a positive impact to the community increasing their audience year after year with their magical tunes.

Friday night fights
MSC Industrial Supply and the Imperial Brigade present Friday Night Fights, Friday at 5 p.m. The main event will be Col. Buhidar. The undercard will be a chance to challenge several other officers from the 11th Bde.
