Flag football title to be decided Friday at 6

Master Sgt. Steve Miller

Quarterback Lawrence Lara of HHB, 5th Bn, 52nd ADA, looks for a receiver to throw to while trying to convert a point-after-touchdown Monday night during his team’s 27-0 first-round playoff win over D Btry, 3rd Bn, 2nd ADA.

The post flag football championship is set to take place at 6 p.m. Friday at Stout Field, but the teams playing in that game were still to be determined at press time.

Through Tuesday, the 54-team field had been pared to 22 in a single-elimination tournament that began among the stiff winds and intermittent rain that pelted the local area Monday night.

One of the survivors was defending post champion E Battery, 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, which won its tournament opener Tuesday night over A Btry, 2nd Bn, 6th ADA Bde, 34-12.

Echo’s opponent in last year’s championship game – the Officer Basic Course – started the tournament with two teams, and both were still alive after Tuesday’s action. OBC #1 held on Monday night to beat A Btry, 3rd Bn, 43rd ADA, 20-16 and followed that win Tuesday night by beating C Btry, 3rd Bn, 2nd ADA, 29-13.

Meanwhile, OBC #2 won its tourney opener Tuesday night with a forfeit win over C Btry, 2nd Bn, 43rd ADA.
Tournament action has been contested at Finney Field and Stout Field the past three nights, but tonight’s quarterfinals and semifinals, and Friday’s championship, will all take place at Stout Field.

Clinic helps swimmers with freestyle stroke

Robert Oppenheim of El Paso swims toward the underwater camera during Saturday’s freestyle stroke clinic at Replica Aquatic Center. Swimmers also got a side view of themselves during an analysis conducted after the videotaping session.

Swimmers had the chance to have themselves videotaped and their freestyle strokes analyzed during a clinic Saturday at Replica Aquatic Center.

The purpose of the videotaping, which was done with an underwater camera, was to analyze the efficiency of each swimmer’s freestyle stroke using a monitor and telestrator, according to Replica’s Wright Stanton, who hosted the clinic and coaches the Fort Bliss Barracudas swimming team.

“We had 25 (attend), and all were masters swimmers (19 or older). They swam across the width of the pool, and then we had them go part of the way down one of the lanes and swim back toward the camera to provide a side view and a front view that we could analyze,” Stanton said.

Helping Stanton with the analysis was Mark Tomlin, a former collegiate All-American swimmer for Southern Methodist University. Using the video monitor and telestrator, Tomlin hoped to show each swimmer how they can become better by reducing resistance (from the water) and increasing propulsion.

“When we talk about reducing resistance, we’re talking about how they move through the water,” Tomlin said. “The more streamlined they are – like a fish or torpedo – the less resistance they have. The goal is to have them swimming with maximum power and minimum resistance.”

Some of the keys for success, Stanton told Jane Masters of El Paso, are keeping the head down, finishing the stroke under water and kicking six beats per pull or stroke.

“I feel confident I’ve improved because he’s critiqued me before, but this is the first time using a video critique,” Masters said of Stanton.

The value of the videotape was not lost, either, on Robert Oppenheim of El Paso.

“The only person who hasn’t seen you swim is you,” Oppenheim said. “The video gives you a chance to understand what happens when you do certain things.”

In addition to the videotaping, Stanton showed a video on the evolution of swimming and held a workout discussion with the attendees in which he stressed the importance of having a planned workout with a time goal.

“A lot of people don’t have a workout. They come to the pool and don’t have any idea what they’re going to do,” Stanton said. “They will see improvement in their swimming if they have a planned workout with a time goal.”
This is the second stroke clinic Stanton has held, and he said he plans to hold another in two or three months. In addition to local swimmers, a couple made the trip from Alamogordo, N.M., to take advantage of the information.
