Col. Larry Kimmich, 5035th commander, tells his Soldiers the certificate of appreciation he is holding is a result of their hard work. The 5035th is being replaced by the 647th.

The 5035th Garrison Support Unit passed responsibility to the 647th Area Support Group in a ceremony Nov. 1.

The first members of the 5035th began serving on Fort Bliss within hours of the attacks on Sept. 11. Fifty-three Military Police Soldiers with the 5035th provided force protection at entrance gates and Bldg. 2 for two-weeks, in a non-pay status, until Fort Bliss could implement a higher security level.

The unit was activated in January 2003 and provided base operations support, command and control of mobilizing and demobilizing Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Department of Defense contractors and civilians and Reserve and National Guard units in response to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Noble Eagle, Armored Falcon, Enduring Freedom and Clear Skies.

Lt. Col. Roger Heger commands the 647th ASG, headquartered in El Paso. The group’s command sergeant major is Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph G. Considine. The headquarters element currently has 38 Soldiers mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Prior to this mission, the 647th ASG deployed to Central America to support Task Force Quetzal as the command and control element from January 2004 to June 2004.
