Community


Recycle your Christmas tree
All fresh cut Christmas trees can be dropped off at the collection point located outside the Recycle Center at the corner of Marshall and Cassidy until Jan. 18. Please remove all lights and ornaments from the tree. Flocked trees are welcomed. For your convenience, roll offs are placed outside the fenced area. The mulch from the trees is available free for pick up at the Fort Bliss Landfill on Landfill Road and at Self-Help, B-1276 (east on Railroad Road off Pleasonton Road). Remember, the solid waste contractor for military family housing will not pick up Christmas trees left on the curb. For information, call 568-1537 or 568-6384.

Tax volunteers needed
The Fort Bliss Tax Office is seeking volunteers to assist Soldiers and their family members in preparing federal and state tax returns for the 2004 tax year.  The tax office will be open from late-January through the end of the tax season in April.  The IRS will provide approximately two weeks of free tax training on post Jan. 10-26. If you desire a challenging and rewarding job, if you are good with forms, numbers and people, and if you have some available time, join us in helping the military community during this tax season.

West Point applications

Each year, approximately 200 regular Army Soldiers and Soldiers from the Reserve and National Guard are offered admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point or the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Although some Soldiers are offered direct admission to West Point, the majority attend USMAPS. The Prep School provides the appropriate academic, military and physical instruction to qualify and motivate Soldiers for admission to and graduation from West Point, and for commissioning as Army second lieutenants.
The Prep School curriculum prepares Soldiers for success at West Point through an intensive curriculum focused on both English and mathematics. Interested Soldiers must be U.S. citizens, be unmarried, with no legal obligation to support dependents, be a high school graduate (GED accepted), not be 23 years of age prior to July 1 of the year entering USMA (not be 22 years of age prior to July 1 of the year entering Prep School), be of high moral character and have a sincere interest in attending West Point and becoming an Army officer.
Major Isenhour, from the United States Military Academy Admissions Office, will be at Fort Bliss Jan. 18-19. He will be prepared to visit any unit to give an admissions brief on the process for making an application to anyone in the unit who might be interested. Isenhour will be available to meet with interested Soldiers, regardless of their high school academic performance, Jan. 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Education Division Conference Room, Bldg. 641.

ACS closure
Army Community Service/Family Assistance Center located in Bldg. 2494 will be closed Jan. 14-17 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. For financial emergencies Friday call 549-1142. Scholarships to dependents
The El Paso Sergeants Major Association is holding a competition for the award of scholarship grants for the 2005 academic year.
Funds for these grants are gathered through fund-raising activities throughout the year and also through individual donations from the association membership.
The association is now taking applications for the award of their 2005 scholarship grants. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors, from El Paso area high schools with a “B” average or above, and be the dependent of an active-duty or retired noncommissioned officer.

MLK observance

The 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade and Fort Bliss will conduct a Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Observance Jan. 20 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Hall, Bldg. 2. This ceremony is in celebration of the birthday of a man who stirred a nation, his contributions and the lasting impact those contributions had on this great nation. This event is free and open to the Fort Bliss and El Paso communities. The theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off!” For information, call 568-7213.

MOAA offering loans

The Military Officers Association of America Educational Assistance Program is now open for the 2005-2006 school year. The MOAA is awarding interest-free loans of $4,000 per year, renewable for up to five years, equaling $20,000. Those eligible for the loans are children, younger than 24, of MOAA members, enlisted active-duty military personnel, Reserve and National Guard members in drilling units and retired enlisted personnel. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited college or university during the 2005-2006 school year as a full-time student. The deadline to enter is March 1, noon EST. Relationship class

Green to Gold

A briefing for Green-Gold will be Jan. 19 and Feb. 16 at WBAMC 8W Conference Room #8006, classes will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Anyone may attend. The program is primarily for nursing; however, information may be given for all Green to Gold programs. 

Military needs warrant officers
The U.S. Army is seeking highly motivated Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen to fill its warrant officer ranks. Positions are open in all 45 specialties if you qualify. Applicants with less than 12 years of active federal service are encouraged to apply.

MTV needs volunteers
The concept is that a cast of five young men will be road-tripping through Texas, attempting to break as many wild and wacky world records as they can. An attempt to break the record of the world’s largest pillow fight will be held at the Sun Bowl stadium Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. MTV will be filming this event for broadcast on national television. All participants and spectators will be required to sign a waiver and bag checks/metal detectors may be used prior to entering the area. For information, call 747-8274.

Brass Bartending
Join us this Friday as we resume Brass Bartending at the Officers’ Club. Col. O’Club BBQ dance
The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club will host a special Chuck Wagon Barbeque and Country Line Dancing dinner at 6 p.m. Jan. 21. The buffet will offer barbecue brisket and chicken, baked beans, corn-on-the-cob, cole slaw, potato salad, watermelon, apple cobbler, hot rolls, and cornbread for just $9.95 for members and $11.95 for nonmembers. Outdoor adventures
The Fort Bliss Outdoor Adventures is pleased to inform you of some of its upcoming outdoor adventures.

Stray pet policy
The Vet Clinic wants to remind everyone about the stray policy on post. Per USAG Regulation 190-4, if a stray is picked up by Animal Control, it will be held at the Impound Facility at the Vet Clinic for three working days. Strays will be checked for microchips and/or tags when caught. If the owner/sponsor does not claim the animal within three days, it will be either put up for adoption or euthanized. Strays that are seriously injured or ill and appear to be suffering may be euthanized prior to the three days if an owner cannot be located or contacted.

Taco Tuesday
The Centennial NCO Club on Biggs Airfield introduces its “all-you-can-eat” Taco Tuesday Jan. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m.  The evening will feature an assortment of hard-shell and soft beef and chicken tacos, rice, beans, chips and salsa, variety of desserts, and a beverage. Margaritas and import beer will also be available for purchase. Pay only $7.95 for adults and $4 for children. Payday bowling tourney
As part of MWR’s monthly post payday activities, the commanding general would like to invite all Team Bliss military and civilians to participate in a three-game bowling tournament Friday at 1 p.m. The cost is $1 per game with no charge for shoe rental. A limited number of spaces are available. Prizes will be awarded to the first through fourth place individuals with high game and high series. Interested individuals must sign up no later than 4 p.m. today. The commanding general endorses the activities to promote team building and camaraderie among community members and to serve as a pleasant departure from the regular workday. Super Bowl parties
MWR facilities will be hosting Super Bowl parties Feb. 6. Make plans to join your friends at one of the following festivities to cheer on your favorite team in this season’s final gridiron showdown.
• The Centennial Club will host its Super Bowl Party at 2 p.m. in The Pub. Watch the game on a big screen TV while munching on popcorn and nachos from the complimentary nacho bar. The Pub offers a fully stocked bar in the warm ambiance of an old English style pub. For information, call 562-5969.

Bowling specials

The Fort Bliss Bowling Center offers snack bar specials Monday through Friday. Buy the featured special for that day and show your receipt to the front counter for a free game during the week. The Bowling Center also offers a weekend special which allows customers who bowl two games to get a third game for free. This special is only applicable Saturdays during open bowling. Also, the Fort Bliss Bowling Center patrons may bowl for just $1 per game Monday through Friday from opening to closing. Come out and enjoy the center’s beautiful ambiance with its 52 lanes, billiard and game room and snack bar that serves up delicious daily lunch specials. CDS special openings
The Child Development Center now offers special hours of operation Saturday at its main location in Bldg. 1730 on Haan Road. Hours are 1 p.m. to midnight. Cost for hourly weekend care is $3.50 per hour; $3 for Tier I. Children, 2 months to 12- years, are eligible for care. Reservations are requested. Call 568-5689 to make reservations or for additional information.

Family story time
Mickelsen Library currently hosts “Read Me a Story” every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. for children 2 to 5 years of age in the children’s room of the library.  The library is also presenting “Family Story Time” for 2 to 6 year-olds, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Parents or guardians must stay with their child through the duration of story-time, which will last about 30 minutes. Each week will feature a new theme, and story readings will include some movement, singing or crafts. Mickelsen Library is located in the E-wing, lower level of Hinman Hall, Bldg. 2. Financial readiness program

The Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program will be presenting a class on the Thrift Savings Program.  TSP is a voluntary retirement savings and investment plan provided for all members of the uniformed services.  One major advantage of the TSP is that contributions and earnings are tax-deferred – you pay no taxes until you withdraw from your account.  This class will be held at ACS, Bldg. 2494, Jan. 12, at 1:30 p.m.  Seating is limited, call for reservations at 568-7088. Free child care is provided for all classes.  Your child must be registered with CDS.  For information, call 569-7750.

Recycle
Effective immediately, all scrap metal and scrap wood, including unserviceable wooden pallets, can be recycled by contacting the following DOE personnel at 526-2003 or 487-6369.  These materials are government property and no other personnel are authorized to take your scrap metal and wood.  The scrap metal is sold through a DRMO contractor and all proceeds from the sale of the metal are returned to the Fort Bliss Recycling Center. So please help your Recycle Center by not disposing scrap metal in dumpsters or the landfill. 

Lighten up

MWR patrons trying to shed a few holiday pounds will find help at the Centennial Club and at Fort Bliss MWR sports and fitness centers. In February, the Centennial will offer special menus featuring healthy dining options as part of a Lighten Up! Tighten Up! Promotion. Diners receive a frequent “healthy” diner card that is stamped when they purchase one of the healthy meals. Cards can be redeemed after 10 healthy meals for a cool fitness prize – pedometers, talking jump ropes, fitness and walking journals, body fat analyzers and more. In addition to these and other local prizes offered by MWR activities, the cards are entered into a grand prize drawing for a seven-day spa resort vacation package.

SKIESUnlimited
The name SKIESUnlimited is an acronym for “School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills” with the word “Unlimited” for the unlimited possibilities this program can offer Army children and youth. SKIESUnlimited encompasses instructional programs for children and youth ranging from four weeks old to adolescence. Through SKIES, children and youth in child development services, school age services, middle school, and teen programs as well as home schooled children, have equal access to opportunities that expand their knowledge, inspire them, allow them to explore and acquire new skills. Closure

In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day, tomorrow will be observed as a training holiday and Jan. 17 will be observed as a federal holiday.  All primary and specialty clinics will be closed on these days.  All clinics will resume normal operations Jan. 18.  As always the emergency department will be open 24 hours daily.  For information call the Tel-A-Nurse line at 569-4444.

Aerobics
The Fort Bliss Sports Division offers a wide variety of instructional classes to help you stay in shape. We want to offer you as many options as possible with classes being taught at Stout Physical Fitness Center, Bldg. 2930 Monday through Sunday. Classes being offered are Body Sculpting, Cardio Kickboxing, Pure Strength, Pilates, Step Sculpt, Sunrise Aerobics, YOGA/ Mind and Meditation, Step and Body Bar Workout, Fat Burner and AbAttack, Power Lunch, Step Challenges, and Fun Fit. Each class costs $3.50. A monthly Aerobics Card, which includes unlimited classes, costs $25. A semi-annual Aerobics Punch Card, worth 15 punches over six month, costs $25. Gang task force presentation
Sgt. Mary Lou Carrillo, a 20-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department will be giving a presentation on gang recognition and intervention to the Fort Bliss community. Carrillo is a nationally recognized presenter and has done numerous briefings and presentations for both the FBI and the DEA. The presentation will be held Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Youthplex, Bldg. 195. For information call 568-KIDS.    

Specialty lunches

Instructors wanted
SKIESUnlimited is looking for in-structors with skills and/or certification within one of the following areas: ballet/gymnastics, bowling, golf, karate, piano, voice lessons, drama/acting and dance. A background check must be successful, paid training is mandatory, and the ability to get along well with the youth of our community is a necessity. This is a before- and after-school program, and we are also looking for instructors who are certified and hold knowledge about “mommies and me” classes and beginning dance for children ages 2 through 6 years. What is YESS?

Youth Education Support Services is responsible for assisting military youth on post with transition issues and providing extracurricular activities from arts to life skills. What can YESS do for you? Provide a youth sponsor for incoming youth at Fort Bliss or provide volunteer opportunities for youth to serve as a youth sponsor or a member of the CYS welcome wagon. Offer access to youth computer labs and homework centers. Provide support to military family members who home school. Along with CYS Outreach Services, provide parent classes related to youth education issues. For information call 569-7732.

Swim classes
Does your child like to swim? Swim lessons will be Feb. 14 through March 14, for ages 3-5. Spaces are limited and cost is $24 for eight lessons. Lessons will be at 9 and 11:15 a.m. If your child attends the Logan Center or the Main Center, staff will provide transportation. You can register your child at any CYS facility. Vet operating hours

The Fort Bliss Vet Clinic has new operating hours. We will be open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Also, we will be continuing our walk-in wellness service every Tuesday and Wednesday in January. Services available on walk-in wellness include vaccinations, mic-rochips, deworming, and heartworm and feline leukemia testing. The Vet Clinic is located on Carter Road between the Bowling Alley and Van Horne Housing Area.

Civilian Fitness Zone
Fort Bliss community members now have another fitness alternative to the main gyms. MWR has opened the Civilian Fitness Zone in Bldg. 251 on Club Road, just beside the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed for lunch from 1 to 2 p.m. The facility features circuit training equipment, cardio, light dumbbells, and Thera Bands. Check Control has moved

MWR Check control clearing has moved from Army Community Services Bldg. 2494 to Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Bldg. 11, second floor. This is also the place for clearing the Officers’ Club and the Golf Course. For information call 568-4444.

Hours of operation

Central Registration and FCC has moved to the ITR Bldg. 1743 on Victory Ave. Hours of operation for Central Registration are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hours of FCC are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Outdoor Adventures hours of operation is 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
The Fort Bliss Information, Ticketing and Registration Office is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, closing for lunch from 1 to 2 p.m., and closed on Saturdays and Sundays

Kids on the Block

The Kids on the Block Puppet shows are available for performances free of charge. The performances cover a variety of topics such as bicycle safety, school safety, vehicle safety, child abuse, bullying, and deployments. Shows can be performed for schools, FRG events/meetings, youth groups, daycare centers, and scout troops. For information contact Lyn Matsey at 568-1132.

Toddler/infant playgroups
The Family Assistance Center conducts toddler and infant playgroups on Tuesday and Thursday of each month. The Toddler Playgroup ranges from ages 18 1/2 months - 3 years of age at the Logan Child Development Center from 10 a.m. to noon. The infant playgroup is offered at the Youthplex every Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. This is an excellent way to interact with your children and meet other parents within the Fort Bliss community. Conversational Spanish class

Army Community Service offers conversational Spanish classes Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the conference room. Participants should call 568-1132 or 569-7762 to register for the class. Free childcare is provided for participants. Children must be registered at the Child Development Center and participants must book their own childcare reservations by calling 568-1132. Classes are for I. D. cardholder’s age 18 and older.
English as a second language
Army Community Service offers English as a second language class on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes are from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Participants should call 568-1132 or 569-7762 to register for the class. Free childcare will be provided for participants. Children must be registered at the Child Development Center and participants must book their own childcare reservations by calling 568-1132. Classes are for I. D. cardholder’s age 18 and older.

Sign language class
Army Community Service Relocation Assistance offers free Sign Language Classes for adults (18 years of age or older) Monday and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. at Army Community Service Bldg. 2494. Classes have begun and go through April 20. (the class schedule for the year is available at Army Community Service). Childcare for students is free at the Child Development Center. Children must be registered at the Child Development Center and reservations must be made by the student. For information or to register for the class call 568-7088.

Happy hour at the Pub
Join us for happy hour every Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Pub (located at the Centennial NCO Club). Great beverage prices and free nacho bar. For information call 568-9330.

Sunday brunches
The Fort Bliss Officers' Club offers a Champagne Sunday Brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday except holiday weekends. The cost is $9.95 for members and $11.95 for nonmembers, $6 for children ages 7 to 11 and free for children 6 and under. Reservations are recommended. Call 568-7013.

PCS/ETS
PCSing to a new installation? The Army Community Service relocation programs will provide you with automated welcome packets on any DoD military installation worldwide while you wait. Assigned to an isolated location far from an installation? Not a problem. Internet access will provide localized information. How do you find that isolated location within CONUS? Computerized route-maps will take you there. Soldiers clearing the installation are advised that strip maps, showing the location of all agencies that must be cleared, are available at the Army Community Service relocation desk at Bldg. 2494, which is also a required stop in the clearing process. Avoid becoming "geographically challenged" by clearing us first. For information, contact Relocation Services at 568-6291.

Oryx reduction hunt

Applications for the Doña Ana Range Oryx population reduction hunt may be obtained at Wal-Mart on Transmountain Road. Or you can apply on line at www.wildlife.state.nm.us.
Applications must be received no later than Feb. 5. The hunt will start as soon as the names are drawn. License price is $109.

Domestic violence briefings
Domestic violence affects military readiness and families as well. It is a fact that children who witness domestic violence at home can become abusers themselves. Now is the time to schedule your unit’s annual domestic violence prevention and awareness brief. Additionally, feel free to schedule your FRG on the issues and concerns of family violence. Share program
The local SHARE program is now accepting applications from families that would like to host an exchange student during the 2005-2006 school year. These students come from all over the world and are looking for people to open their homes to them. Some students want to stay the Fall semester only and others for the entire school year. All students speak English, have their own spending money and medical insurance. To find out more about the program contact the local coordinator at 544-5992.

Flu vaccine update
Enrolled veterans aged 50 or abovemay receive the flu vaccine regardless of health condition. Also enrolled veterans age 49 or lower may continue to receive flu vaccine of they have certain chronic illnesses such as lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease of or other illnesses which effect the immune sytem. The El Paso Veterans Administration Health Care Center has vaccine at this time.

Healthcare forum
The William Beaumont Army Medical Center Health Care Consumer Forum invites all beneficiaries to its bimonthly forum, Jan. 19 from 10-11 a.m. at the Army Community Service Center, across from Stayton Theater. Topics of discussion include; emergency room renovation, pharmacy prescription process, healthy living, referral for civilian healthcare and an open discussion. Time Warner clearing
Time Warner Cable has opened an office in Bldg. 505, Room 114 for clearing purposes only. The hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1to 4 p.m.
