Steven Wilson and Andre Payne combined for 18 first-half points Monday night to stake HHB, 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery, to a 10-point halftime lead en route to a 41-37 win over HHB, 11th ADA Brigade.
The game was the season opener for both teams in the Echelons Above Corps league, which features teams from the 11th ADA Bde competing in two divisions.

“We realized they were getting tired because they had six players to our 12,” said Hellraisers’ Coach Gregory Robinson. “They got tired about halfway through the first half, and we were able to pull away a little bit.”
Wilson and Payne fueled a 6-0 run in the last minute of the first half to give the Hellraisers their 24-14 halftime bulge. Wilson had 10 in the opening 20 minutes and Payne tallied eight.

HHB, 11th would not go quietly, however. They opened the second half with an 8-0 run that closed the gap to 24-22. Robert Hardnett scored four points during the spurt, and Tommy Evans and John Schmidt each notched two.

A steal and layup by Trevor Wolf got the Hellraisers on the board in the second half, made the score 26-22 and broke the streak by HHB, 11th. The lead would eventually reach 11 on a fast-break layup by Stacey Murdock, but HHB, 11th made a late charge to twice close the gap to four. They could get no closer, however, before time expired.

“I felt when they made their run in the second half they were focusing on the half-court game. That was a useful tool for us because we were able to trap and get some turnovers and build our lead back up. Plus time was on our side,” Robinson said.

Wilson finished with 15 for the Hellraisers to lead all scorers. Hardnett had 14 to pace HHB, 11th ADA Bde.
