Bliss runners excel in Phoenix marathon

Master Sgt. Steve Miller
Public Affairs Chief

Eric Newman, Laura Buddemeyer and Larry Smith, left to right, were three of the eight runners who represented Fort Bliss in a Jan. 9 marathon in Phoenix.

Eight Fort Bliss runners – including several members of the Team Bliss Army Ten Miler team – excelled in a Jan. 9 marathon in Phoenix.

Manuel Portes of William Beaumont Army Medical Center led the way for Team Bliss, finishing in 2 hours, 47 minutes and 13 seconds. His time was 23rd overall among the 7,365 finishers.

Eric Newman of HHB Center was next for Team Bliss in 3:09.24, good for 144th overall in the race, known officially as the P.F. Chang’s Rock and Roll City Marathon. Right behind Newman was 11th ADA Brigade’s Larry Smith, who finished in 3:09.53, 156th overall.

“If it wasn’t for Sergeant Smith and me pushing each other during critical points along the course, the goal of 3 hours and 10 minutes wouldn’t have been attained,” Newman said in an e-mail message.

Kate Carr of WBAMC and Laura Buddemeyer of 108th ADA Bde were each running their first marathon, and both finished in just over four hours. Carr finished in 4:01.20, 1,809th overall, and Buddemeyer’s time was 4:02.33, 1,856th overall.

Three other WBAMC runners participated, including a husband-wife duo. Tina Leech finished in 3:45, and James Leech ran a 4:18. Angela Peterson of WBAMC logged a 4:12.
Team Bliss’ results are summarized in the accompanying chart.

Fort Bliss Sports Office

The 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade won the Division AA Commander’s Cup for the first time in 2004, defeating 31st ADA Bde by 45 points (835 to 790), while Joint Task Force-North repeated as the Division A Commander’s Cup champion.

The Imperial Brigade used tremendous command emphasis and support for their intramural sports teams by participating in all 18 intramural sports and by winning the post championship in five of them – golf, mini-golf, paintball, team duathlon and tennis. Their teams also placed and earned competition points in seven other sports – basketball, bowling, flag football, soccer, softball, track and the post 10K run.

Despite being one of the smaller Division A commands, JTF-North dominated its division by earning 375 points, beating Garrison Command by 140 points (375 to 235). JTF-North also enjoyed exceptional command support and earned participation points in 17 events and competition points in mini-golf, racquetball, tennis and the post 5K run by placing in those events.

The Fort Bliss Sports Office congratulates the 11th ADA Bde and JTF-North for their accomplishments and extends good luck wishes to all commands in 2005.

Two new Commander’s Cup events have been added for 2005. Those two are modern Army combatives and team dodgeball, bringing to 20 the total number of Commander’s Cup events.
