Self Care Program offers tips to stay healthy

Kathleen Thompson
WBAMC

The Self Care Program was established by the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine in 2001 and has continued at various Army installations in various forms ever since. The Self Care Program is managed by the Department of Preventive Medicine’s Health Promotion Service and conducted at the WBAMC and Fort Bliss Wellness Centers.

The program has evolved into a 25-minute video briefing that introduces the concept of health promotion and prevention. The briefing covers seven areas related to health: Weight control, diet, not smoking, alcohol in moderation, avoiding injury, and prevention practices. Once briefed, attendees will receive a sticker for their identification card that will allow them access to over-the-counter medication. In addition to the briefing and access to over the counter medications, the program offers a book detailing various healthcare topics including:

• Common injuries

• Ear, nose and throat

• Skin problems and childhood diseases

• Bones, muscles and joints

• Chest and abdominal

• Generalized problems

• Women’s health

• Sexual problems

• Management of medical care

The WBAMC pharmacy or the Soldier Family Medical Clinic pharmacy located here may be used. After being briefed and receiving the sticker, attendees are then eligible to receive free over-the-counter medications.
For further information, there are certified health educators located at both centers that have specialized experience in health education and health promotion. We are here to assist in achieving and maintaining good health.A

Over-the-counter medications are available to active duty Soldiers and their dependents. There is also a 25-minute long video briefing.

There must also be a sticker on the identification card to show at the pharmacy. An over-the-counter medication sheet lists the medications available without a prescription. The over-the-counter medication sheet does not cover prescription medications or refills.

The primary goal of the Self Care Program is to increase knowledge and awareness with regard to overall health. In addition we hope that by offering this service we will: decrease the time it takes to recover from illness, reduce the number of non-emergency hospital visits, use our healthcare services more wisely, and reduce the cost of unnecessary services. Good health is its own reward. However, a vigorous lifestyle, a sense of adventure, personal will, and individual responsibility are essential to a healthy life.
