The newest and most successful Fort Bliss’ varsity team, Team
Bliss Judo, now has four Soldiers that earned the title of Texas State
Judo Champions.
Saturday the Fort Bliss Judo Team traveled to Odessa to compete at the
Texas Judo State Championships. After training and competing for only
10 months, this tournament was the first opportunity for some of the
team members to compete at the advanced level division, and they proved
their warrior ethos by winning an impressive 14 of 19 matches and bringing
home nine medals. Of the nine medals, four were state championship titles.
By placing at the state tournament, these athletes are now qualified
to represent Fort Bliss and the Army at the U.S. Judo Senior National
Champion-ships at Virginia Beach, Va.
The Fort Bliss judo athletes began their competitive journey last September
and so far have competed in five tournaments collecting a total of 35
medals for the Team Bliss program.
The judo team is constantly searching for individuals that possess the
warrior mentality and would like to become competitive judo fighters.
This team is in line with the Army combatives program, and 80 percent
of its members are Army combatives certified. The team is sponsored
by the 3rd Battalion, 6th Air Defense Artillery, as they practice at
the installation combatives facility in Bldg. 60.
Team Bliss judo’s next challenge will be the Southwest Judo Championships
in Albuquerque, N.M. This tournament will be used to prepare for the
U.S. Senior Nationals Tournament. If you are interested in the judo
program, call 568-5677.
