A group of Army National Guard Soldiers from the 152nd Maintenance Company in Augusta, Maine, cheers on the Patriots Sunday just before halftime of Super Bowl XXXIX. A huge throng of deploying Soldiers gathered at The Centennial to watch the Super Bowl on the big screens in each corner of the main ballroom.

Four huge screens – one in each corner of the ballroom – provided a larger-than-life backdrop Sunday for hundreds of deploying Soldiers who flocked to The Centennial to see Super Bowl XXXIX broadcast live from Jacksonville, Fla.

Some in the group were Army National Guard Soldiers from the 152nd Maintenance Company in Augusta, Maine, and they backed the Patriots all the way while snacking on chips and hot dogs throughout the day.
“We’ve got a couple rows of tables along this wall, the Eagles fans have a couple rows along the wall on the other side of the room and people in between are rooting for both teams,” explained Spc. Maghen Philbrook, a heavy construction equipment repairer with the 152nd.

Bud Girls Betsy Keller, left, and Dalia Fierro made a mid-afternoon stop at the Down Under to liven up the Super Bowl party there.

Loyalties were evenly split among the capacity crowd at the Down Under also, though Eagles fans seemed more animated, cheering loudly when things went well and groaning loudly when they didn’t. The same held true at the Golden Tee snack bar at Underwood Golf Course, though the crowd was much smaller, perhaps because of the weekend rain that pelted the local area.

Bud Girls Betsy Keller and Dalia Fierro made a mid-afternoon stop to liven up the party at the Down Under, and even their loyalties were split.

“I just hope it’s a close game,” Keller said. “So many Super Bowls turn into routs, but I think it will be close because the Patriots really don’t blow teams out. They just find a way to win.”

Keller’s words proved prophetic, as the Pats notched a 24-21 win, their third Super Bowl triumph in four years.
