CLOUDCROFT, N.M.—Taking a break from the battalion Operational Tempo, Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Clem of the 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery decided to take his senior noncommissioned officers away from the battalion area for the quarterly professional development meeting.

The senior NCOs of the “Unleash Hell” battalion spent two days in Cloudcroft, N.M., where a variety of programs were discussed and updated.

“This is the first organization that I’ve been a part of whereby we’ve developed and implemented numerous systems key to the success of a unit with the future of the organization in mind as a whole,” said Sgt. Maj. Tedd Pritchard.

The agenda for areas of discussion began with Command Sgt. Maj. Henry Hurd. His command philosophy was explained in detail to the NCOs present to include a strong emphasis on Soldier development and the core issues that Soldiers within the brigade have encountered.

Although many of the classes given during the two-day developmental retreat were refreshers for the senior NCOs, mindset and focus on the topics were new.

“It is important to get the leaders away from the work environment; distance allows you to focus on teaching, coaching and mentoring in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Clem.

Classes during the retreat included: Sergeant’s Time Training, Specialty Team Training, Physical Training and Special Population PT, counseling, and Pre-Marksmanship Instruction.

The 11th Bde. Legal team delivered instructions on the process of courts martial as well as the procedures that senior NCOs play within the courts martial proceedings. Trends of disciplinary infractions were addressed as well as deterrents and preventative measures in order to secure the safety of the Soldiers as well as the units and their mission.

A template for NCO leader’s books was developed and distributed to the NCOs by Clem. The template offered a guideline of essential information that NCOs should have on their Soldiers. Additionally, individual Mission Essential Task Lists were included into the leader’s book.

Although Sergeant’s Time and Specialty Team Training were not new topics to the senior NCOs, additions and a new Standard Operating Procedure for the topics were. Areas of discussion for the STT were updated to include a new list of personnel who conduct the training while crew drills and air battles are fought by the Patriot crews.

A standard counseling packet used to track the personnel information and development of Soldiers, to include monthly counseling forms were introduced recently as the battalion as a standard.

With a battalion range density scheduled for the end of next month, a refresher class was given to the senior NCOs regarding PMI. In order to train the Soldiers on proper breathing and sight picture, the battalion had been using a laser-based system of instruction during the PMI sessions. The system concept and procedure of orientation and instruction were refreshed to the senior NCOs to pass on to their junior NCOs who mentor Soldiers.
