Soldiers of Joint Task Force-North at Biggs Army Airfield were presented their second consecutive Commander’s Cup in a ceremony held Tuesday at the JTF-N headquarters for dominating the 2004 intramural sports season.

Maj. Gen. Michael A. Vane, Fort Bliss commanding general, was there to present the trophy to the Soldiers of JTF-N, who accumulated the most points in the variety of sporting events played throughout the course of the year. Over the course of 11 events, JTF-N gained a total of 835 points, beating out their closest competitors by 45.

“I think it just signifies the commitment we have to sports and working together as a team,” said Sgt. Francis Ward, a JTF-N administration noncommissioned officer. “We do a lot of [temporary duty] here and a lot of missions and it’s extremely tough to get an entire group of players here on any one day.”

Ward participated in several of the sports involved in winning the Cup including basketball, football, volleyball, softball, racquetball, tennis and bowling. Ward said the other Soldiers in his unit, both officers and enlisted personnel, were able to commit key players to specific sports and work well together, which led to their winning season.

“Everybody understands their role on the team. [They] all understand that we’re here to win and that’s what it’s all about,” said Ward. “It’s about winning and doing whatever it takes to win the championship.”

Sgt. Benjamin Smith, a JTF-N personnel noncommissioned officer who was another key player throughout the season, said his unit has one obvious goal on their mind for the upcoming intramural season.

“We’re going to go for our third win if we can get the support from our command like we’ve been getting for the previous years,” said Smith.

Other events in the Commander’s Cup include the soccer, track and field, golf and miniature golf, the Bataan Death March, 10-mile and 10-kilometer runs and swimming.
