Fiesta Celebration Freedom Fiesta started in 2003 as a week-long celebration to welcome Fort Bliss Soldiers back from Operation Iraqi Freedom and thank them for a job well done. The event was so successful it has grown to a month long salute to all the military members and their families of our region. Freedom Fiesta is sponsored by the General of the Army Omar N. Bradley Chapter, AUSA, the Armed Forces Committee of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the City of El Paso with the great support of AUSA corporate members, and the members of the Chambers of Commerce. This year’s theme is; “We don’t need a war to thank a Soldier, and their families, for all they sacrifice to keep our nation free!” Saturday, May 14 - “Soldier Appreciation Picnic” Sponsored by Raytheon. Fort Bliss, Kelly Park, 3-8 p.m. Free games, food, beverages and entertainment for all military and their family members serving on active duty. Monday, May 16 - “Golf Challenge” Sponsored by Boeing. Coronado Country Club, 11 a.m. Local businesses will sponsor 25 teams to play in a 4-Man Scramble tournament. Teams are composed of one businessman and three Soldiers. Lunch will precede the tournament and conclude with a buffet and awards ceremony. Interested Soldiers can submit their names to Bobby Kaerwer, Golf Pro at Underwood Golf Complex. 562-7255/1273/2066. Saturday, May 21 - “Armed Forces Day” at Fort Bliss. Will start off with a Red Cross Fun Run at 8 a.m. Static military displays, demonstrations, entertainment and the Annual Sergeants Major Association Chili Cook-off. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free admission. Monday, May 23 - “Golf Challenge” Sponsored by Prime Irrigation and Landscape. Vista Hills Country Club, 11 a.m. Local businesses will sponsor 25 teams to play in a 4-Man scramble tournament. Free admission to COSTCO and 10% discounts at most stores throughout Bassett Place over the Memorial Day Weekend. Show your ID card at the cashier for discounts. Wednesday, June 1 – “Military Night with the Diablos” Sponsored by Casa Ford. Come out and enjoy the entertainment and game at Cohen Stadium. 7 p.m. Free admission with tickets through ITR. Week of June 5 - “Distinguished Soldier Recognition Week.” Brigade level NCOs and Soldiers of the Year and spouses are treated for an evening and dinner at the El Paso Club. Friday, June 3 – “Wet & Wild.” Free admission for Soldiers on active duty and $4.95 admission for family members. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Present military ID at the entrance. Wednesday and Thursday, June 8-9 – “Western Playland,” 11 a.m.-closing. Free admission for active-duty Soldiers and $8 for family members. Friday, June 10 – “Military Night at the El Paso Speedway Park.” Modified, Super Stock, and Street Stock Racing. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Races 7:45-11 p.m. Free admission and food with tickets through ITR. All week June 15 -19 - “Shop Till You Drop” at Cielo Vista Mall. Discounts at most stores throughout the Cielo Vista Mall. Pick up Shoppers Guide at the Simon Market Place, Lower Level (Information). See www.ausa.org/chapweb/obc/index/htm Tuesday, June 14 – “Army Birthday Retreat Ceremony.” Fort Bliss Memorial Circle. 4 p.m. The Omar Bradley Chapter-AUSA will sponsor the Army’s 230th Birthday Cake cutting as part of the traditional streamer ceremony. Volunteers will receive invitations for the Freedom Fiesta Recognition Ceremony following retreat.
