Damian Chapa, right, actor and director, interacts with Soldiers on his visit to Fort Bliss April 5.

Actor and director Damian Chapa visited Fort Bliss Tuesday. He is best known for his role as Miklo in the action/drama movie Bound by Honor. He interacted and presented premiere tickets to Soldiers for his new movie El Padrino.

“He is honored to do this for the troops. He wants them to know they are appreciated and are in our hearts and prayers. As you come on post, and see the Soldiers you get this feeling in your heart. You can’t help but think of all the lives that have been lost fighting for our freedom,” said Patricia Noriega, personal assistant for Chapa.

Chapa said he is a big supporter of people in the military. He has a great deal of respect for Soldiers who risk their lives for something they believe in. “I might not agree with all the political aspects in Washington, however, I respect and support the military 100 percent. I know what it’s like to be away from your family. I was in the Navy a long time ago. That’s why I wanted to stop by,” said Chapa.

“I’m glad people like him come here not only to promote their movies, but he was genuinely interested in us. I thought he was really nice and very down to earth,” said Staff Sgt. Olivia Morris, Command Group.

Chapa asked who had been deployed and what had they experienced. Spc. Jose Diaz, 72nd Military Police Detachment, said he had been in Iraq for a year. “It is pretty intense, but after a while you get use to it. It helps you to mature and face those challenges you might encounter later on in life.”

El Padrino premiered Friday, at Tinseltown Theatre. Chapa chose El Paso to promote his new film because of its large Hispanic population. “To test the market so to speak,” he added. Chapa is the main character in the R rated film. He also wrote and directed the movie and said it is “an intense learning experience for everyone who chooses the wrong side of the road. It teaches that crime does not pay.”

Chapa’s other roles include: Ken in the movie Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Carmine in Money Talks starring Chris Tucker and Martin Sheen, Tackman in Under Siege starring Steven Seagal and many more. He has appeared in various TV series such as Melrose Place, The Rockford Files, and On Seventh Avenue.
