Environmental
Awards luncheon held
The Directorate of Environment held its annual Fort Bliss Environmental Quality Awards Luncheon at the Centennial Club, Biggs Army Air Field, April 18. The award ceremony honors Soldiers and civilians who, through their official positions, have proven themselves to be good stewards of the environment. “It’s a way to honor them and thank them for their efforts,” said Rita Crites, Directorate of Environment. “These individuals have indeed tried to improve or look for new ways to protect the environment … helping us (DOE) to protect the environment for Fort Bliss and the City of El Paso.” Award winners are: Sgt. Leslie D. King, 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery, was presented the Military Individual of the Year, Supervisory; Domingo Fuentes, Directorate of Public Works and Logistics, was presented the Civilian Individual of the Year, Supervisory, award; Justin M. Lucus, 3rd Battalion, 6th Air Defense Artillery, was presented the Military Individual of the Year, Non-Supervisory, award; Miguel Cheng-Guajardo, post architect, Directorate of Public Works and Logistics, was presented the Civilian Individual of the Year, Non-Supervisory, award; Isaac Trejo, Miratek Consulting Group, was presented the Environmental Professional of the Year award; Douglas J. Yost, Buyer’s Advocate Real Estate Inspections of El Paso, won the Environmental Steward of the Year award; John A. Deplata, Directorate of Public Works and Logistics, was presented the Outstanding Beneficial Landscape award; Willie Perez, Raytheon Technical Services Company, won the Pollution Prevention Champion, Individual, award; Cpt. Ronald C. Powell, 3-360th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 91st Division, won the Conservation Supporter award; and Marc A. Wilson, 1st Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery Battalion, was presented the Recycling Advocate award. Organizational awards were presented to: Headquarters Battery, 1 Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery was presented the Deploying Unit award; 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery was presented the Environmental Supporter unit award; Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 6th Air Defense Artillery was presented the Environmental Organization of the Year award; 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery was presented the Best FORSCOM Unit award; and the Roads and Ground Entomology Shop, VT Griffin Services, was presented the Pollution Prevention, Organization, award. Honorable Mentions for the awards were: Sgt. 1st Class Barry E. Green, 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery; Joe Rodriguez, 1-1 ADA; Nolan F. Taylor, 1-1 ADA; Spc. Arturo H. Gomez, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade; Spc. Anthony Seda, 1-1 ADA; John C. Tomplinson, Letterkenny Center of Excellence; David E. Jevons, Directorate of Environment; Jarred W. Torrance and Ted K. Wulff, AAFEES Real Estate Directorate; Bertram R. Wiles, Directorate of Environment; and Chief Warrant Officer Larry Bowen, 1-1 ADA. Units identified as Honorable Mentions are: Headquarters Battery, 1-1 ADA; 3-360 Regiment, 2/91st Division; and 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery. The award ceremony also commemorates Earth Day, April 21. DOE also will be sponsoring an Earth Day event today, April 21, at the Fort Bliss Youthplex Bldg., Bldg. 195, at 8:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m..
