Community


Air operations

The Air Assault School will be conducting air operations at Smith Bliss Field May 12 from noon to 4:30 p.m. and May 13 at Noel Field from 10 a.m. to noon. Expect greater than normal noise and vehicle traffic those two days.

Freedom Team Salute

The U.S. Army is launching a new program this month - Freedom Team Salute - to recognize and honor Soldier supporters—parents, spouses, and family members. Freedom Team Salute will also recognize employers of U.S. Army Soldiers serving in the Army Reserve or Army National Guard. In addition, the Army will recognize and honor veterans who have served our nation.

Soldiers are encouraged to nominate up to four people to receive recognition and an Freedom Team Salute Commendation package from the Secretary of the Army and the Army Chief of Staff. This package includes a U.S. Army lapel pin, a U.S. Army decal, a certificate of appreciation and a letter signed by the Chief of Staff and the Secretary of the Army, recognizing the recipient for their support of our Soldiers.

Soldiers can nominate supporters online at the FTS Web site: http://freedomteamsalute.us.army.mil. Recipients will receive their official FTS Commendation package within four to six weeks.

Red Cross youth program

The American Red Cross is sponsoring a Youth Volunteer Orientation May 14 at the ARC office, Bldg. 45 Slater Rd., and May 21 at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center first floor clinic assembly room. Street festivals


The El Paso Empowerment Zone will sponsor a series of three street festivals beginning in June on Texas Avenue, from Campbell to Noble Streets. The first of the three festivals, the Custom Car and Chopper Festival, will take place June 18 and 19. The Texas Salsa Festival will be held Sept. 4, and the Texas Rasquache Art Festival will be held Oct. 29. Blue Star Banner program


The American Legion Family will hold the Blue Star Banner Event May 15 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Paso Del Norte American Legion Post #58, 4274 Vulcan Ave. The event is free and open to all active duty Soldiers, their families and family members of those who have servicemembers deployed. Baseball registration

For the first time in El Paso 15 and 16-year-olds will be able to play baseball in the New Senior Division World Series Little League and compete to go to the State tournament. All baseball coaches are urged to setup select teams and call Frank Montes, Little League Baseball District Administrator for additional information at 845-6527.

CG change of command

The United States Army Air Defense Artillery School and Center will conduct the change of command ceremony for the outgoing commander Maj. Gen. Michael A. Vane and incoming commander Brig. Gen. Robert Lennox June 9 at Noel Field from 8 to 9 a.m. Invitees and all distinguished guests should RSVP to the Fort Bliss Protocol office no later than May 18 at 568-5323 or 568-6307.

5K run championship


There will be a 5K Post Championship Run at the Logan Heights Physical Fitness Center May 6, beginning at 6:30 a.m. Participation is unlimited and the event is open to active duty Soldiers and Reserve and National Guard Soldiers in an active status who are assigned or attached to Fort Bliss. Registration begins the day of the race at 5:30 a.m. For more information, call Paul Fernandez at 568-8697.

New fitness facility

A new fitness facility near the Officers’ Club called the Fort Bliss Tennis Club and Fitness Zone is scheduled to open May 13 at 7 p.m. The facility will offer a five-court tennis club and fitness area with a 20-piece circuit training room. The facility will also have two practice courts. Special promotions will also be conducted the entire month of May, including drawings for a free week of tennis instruction or week of personal training, and other gift certificates. Memorial weekend tournament


The Armijo Center will hold their 4th annual Memorial Weekend Basketball Tournament May 27 through 30 at the Armijo Recreation Center. The games will begin at 6 p.m. each night. The cost is $125 per team in the Men’s Open division and $100 per team in the Men’s 40 and Over division. For more information, call 820-3376.

Mother’s Day dance

A Mother’s Day Dance will be held Saturday at the Armijo Senior Citizen Center from 1 to 5 p.m. Chito Gonzales and his band Marachi Alegre will be playing from 4 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 544-5436.

AAFES dividends


The Army & Air Force Exchange Services has announced that it is returning $242.3 million to the services’ Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs. For 2004, this dividend represents an average per capita dividend of $277 for every Soldier and Airman, a 5 percent increase over last year. In 2003, AAFES paid a per capita dividend of $264.

Golf scramble

As part of the monthly post payday activities, the commanding general would like to invite all Fort Bliss Soldiers to participate in a nine-hole golf scramble tomorrow beginning at noon. Soldiers E6 and below pay $3 and E7 and above pay $5. There is no charge for club members E6 and below, E7 and above as members pay $1. Carts are $4 per player. Regular price is $8 per player. Club rental is $2.50 per set. A limited number of spaces are available. Prizes will be awarded to the first place team and closest to the pin. Interested individuals must sign up no later than 4 p.m. today. The commanding general endorses the activities to promote team building and camaraderie among soldiers and to serve as a pleasant departure from the regular workday. Piano recital


Roger Ryerson, son of retired Chief Warrant Officer Bill Ryerson, will give a piano recital at the El Paso Museum of Art May 15 at 2:30 p.m. Roger, graduated from Washburn University with a degree in piano performance. The event is free.

AAFES recognition

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service received the prestigious Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from the Good Housekeeping Institute for its Baby’s Choice Infant Formula line. Products approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute may be advertised in Good Housekeeping Magazine and are backed by their consumer’s policy, which states that if a product bearing the Seal proves to be defective within two years of purchase, Good Housekeeping will replace the product or refund the purchase price.

AFTB gold fundraiser

The annual Army Family Team Building Golf Fundraiser is scheduled for May 13 at Underwood Golf Complex’s Sunrise Course. Sign-in begins at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon. Cost is $30 per person for military and DA civilians and $40 for El Paso community players. Price includes green fees, golf cart, range balls, a goody bag and lunch. Handball clinics

Team Bliss is looking for anyone interested in playing handball. Free lessons and clinics are conducted every Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Stout Physical Fitness Center. Soldiers and dependants are welcome and equipment is provided. Call 562-6265, 727-0335 or 568-4508 to sign-up.

Team duathlon

The 2005 Fort Bliss Intramural Team Duathlon Post Championship will be held May 13 at 6:30 a.m. at the Replica Pool. The first team member runs five kilometers, the second swims 400 meters and the third runs five kilometers. Sign up is at the Replica Pool the day of the event. Successful stepfamilies

The 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade is sponsoring “Building a Successful Stepfamily” June 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Officers’ Club. Registration is $15 per person or $20 per couple at the door, and reservations will be accepted until June 7 through each unit’s battalion or brigade chaplain. For more information, call Chap. Mother’s Day brunches

The Officers’ Club is having its annual Mother’s Day Brunch May 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Breakfast selections will include pancakes, eggs, and crepes, and lunch entrees that make the Officers’ Club famous.  The cost is $11.95 for members, children ages 7 to12 are half price, children 6 years and under are free.  Nonmembers pay $13.95. Reservations are required so reserve a seat for you and your mother soon by calling 568-7013.  The Centennial will also host its annual Mother’s Day Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Cost is $12.95 for adults.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling 562-5969.

7th Infantry reunion

Youth track meeting

An informational meeting for athletes and parents will be held May 7 at 9 a.m. at the YouthPlex Bldg. 195, Chaffee Rd. Kids interested in participating in the summer track program are encouraged to attend. Also, anyone interested in coaching please arrive at 8:30 a.m. to meet with the head coach. We are particularly looking for those with experience in field events but all are welcome. For more information, call 568-KIDS.

Community Pool

Join MWR June 25 and July 30 for a wet and wild time at the Community Pool’s first ever “Dive Inn”!  Join us for friends, family, and food as we play great movies at the pool!  Parents and kids can arrive at the starlit cinema at 7 p.m. or patrons can come early in the day and stay until night. Movie starts at 8:30 p.m. Cost is only $1 and snacks will be provided for an extra cost. Watching a movie will never be the same. Fort Bliss Community Pool Dive Inn- it’s like a Drive Inn, only not as dry. For more information contact Lauren Short at 568-7013. 

Ballet classes

Registration for ballet classes by Cynthia Gamez is now open. Classes are May 4 to 24 and June 8 to July 1. All classes will be at the Teen Center and may be prepared in conjunction with the SKIES Dance and Gymnastic program. Must be registered with Central Registration to participate.

Preballet: for 3-5 year olds Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 3:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. The instructor will introduce basic ballet movements to students, concentrating on developing gross motor skills, listening to music, learning to count beats, and musical expression. One recital per year will be presented to showcases students progress.

Primary ballet: for school age elementary children Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. Primary ballet for elementary students follows a primary syllabus that includes plies, tendus, chasses, gallops skips, and other preparatory ballet exercises. Each will lead to the preparation of a short dance and prepare the student for further studies.

One recital per year will be presented to showcases students progress.

Ballet 1: for elementary students ages 6 and older Wednesday and Friday 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Cost for this class is $50 per month. Class instruction is geared to those who are interested in a serious ballet program. The course will follow a structured syllabus that will focus on developing a ballet technique. One recital per year will be presented to showcases students progress.

Softball tourney


There will be a fundraising softball tournament May 14 at 9 a.m. at the Bradley Softball Complex for the Team Bliss varsity softball team. The tournament is open to all unit teams and will be played in double elimination or pool play format, depending on the number of teams entered. The entry fee is $75 per team and the registration fee is due May 13 at noon. For more information, call Joe Fedak at 568-5995.

Financial training

ADAPTC date changes

The Army Substance Abuse Program has changed the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Training Course dates for May. The course was originally scheduled for May 3 and 4, but has been changed to May 10 and 11. For more information, call the Fort Bliss ASAP at 568-1033.

Troops to Teachers

Military personnel, veterans, spouses and civilian employees who are interested in becoming a teacher are invited to the Troops to Teachers seminar, “The Realities of Becoming a Teacher,” being held May 6 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Bldg. 515A, room 107. HazMart open for turn-ins

The Fort Bliss HazMart turn-in site, Bldg. 2515, will be open Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to accept items from on-post housing residents as part of Spring Clean-up 2005. Items that will be accepted include used oil, oil filters, batteries, solvents, paints, oven cleaners, antifreeze, brake fluid, toilet bowl cleaners, pool chemicals, degreasers, drain cleaners, dry cleaning material, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, charcoal, rust removers and furniture polish. Items not accepted include explosives, ammunition, radioactive waste, business-generated waste, commercial hazardous waste, biomedical waste, non-hazardous waste and used tires. AFTB Golf Tournament

The 10th Annual Army Family Team Building Golf Tournament will be held May 13 at the Underwood Golf Course. The cost to play is $30 for DoD ID cardholders and $40 for civilians. FCC applicant training


The Family Child Care program of Child and Youth Services is conducting applicant training for potential FCC providers May 9 through 13 at the Logan Child Development Center, Bldg. 3500. May 17, the New Orientation Class begins for transferring providers from any military installation at the same location. The classes start at 8 a.m. each morning. Consumer complaints


The Army Community Service Financial Readiness program has partnered with the El Paso Better Business Bureau to provide a streamlined consumer complaint resolution process and to better track trends in the community. The BBB will provide a representative at ACS every Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. They will offer a class beginning at 2 p.m. on complaint issues specific to El Paso or that are of top concern in the United States. After each class, they will be available for questions, concerns or to file formal complaints. Clients can still come in Monday through Friday to file a compliant against a company with the Consumer Affairs Office at ACS. 

Pharmacy search tool 


TRICARE announces the new pharmacy Formulary Search Tool, which allows beneficiaries to find medication-specific information using either a drug name or a medical condition. The Formulary Search Tool can be accessed through the TRICARE Pharmacy Web site at www.tricareformularysearch.org.

Polk book published


World War II Letters and Notes of Col. James H. Polk has been published and is now available at Amazon.com. It gives a firsthand and very personal account of the campaign to defeat Nazi Germany through the unique perspective of Polk’s loving letters to his wife, Josephine. PAO internship

Anyone interested in competing to become a DA central Public Affairs intern should submit their resume electronically to donovjf@hqda.army.mil or by facsimile to (703) 697-2792 with their undergraduate collegiate transcript. If you have not yet graduated, you should send your transcript to date. Submit copies of college transcripts or a list of college courses taken that identify for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade and grade point received. Copies of transcripts are acceptable. Original transcripts are not required. Please do not submit anything by surface mail. Deadline for submission of these documents is May 13.

The selection process this year will occur under the authority of the Federal Career Intern Program. To be considered, candidates must have at least a grade point average of 2.95 in all their undergraduate courses, or provide evidence from the college that they were in the top one-third of their graduating class. It will take about a month to review and screen applications. Eventually, about 30 finalists will be identified and interviewed in June, and 14 to 20 of them selected. Selections will probably not be announced until early July. Interested parties should also check the Web site at www.army.mil/internship to be sure they understand what they are applying for. 

Reach for Recovery

Reach for Recovery, a program where breast cancer survivors visit with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to talk to them, answer questions and demonstrate post surgery exercises, is looking for volunteers. The volunteers must go through training, and the next training date is tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The volunteers must have had treatment for breast cancer, be at least one year post-surgery and if applicable, at least three months post-reconstructive surgery. They must also have approval of their physician or surgeon and must not be presently under adjuvant treatment, with exception of hormonal therapy. Well-Being survey


The inspector general requests participation in the Fort Bliss Well-Being Survey. The survey is for the entire Team Bliss – Soldiers, civilian employees and family members. This survey will assist the commanding general in determining areas that need improvement and areas that are doing well. Chili cook-off


The El Paso Sergeants Major Association is sponsoring an Armed Forces Day Chili Cook-Off May 21. This is a major event and teams are limited. The entry fee is $35 and at least one team member must be a military ID card holder. For more information, call Karen Beaman at 568-8875.

Farewell luncheon

A farewell luncheon will be held May 19 for Liane Vane and Maura McCabe at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All Fort Bliss personnel are welcome to attend. Reservations are accepted by calling 566-4502 if your last name ends in A-M or 585-3293 if it is N-Z. The deadline for reservations is May 16.

SAMC scholarship

The Fort Bliss Sergeant Audie Murphy Club is sponsoring a scholarship fund. Dependents, civilians, active duty military and retirees who need financial assistance to attend college are encouraged to apply. The deadline for the two $2,500 scholarships is May 16. The winner will be announced during the Fort Bliss SAMC induction ceremony in June. Youth football

History lecture


Maj. Gen. (retired) Jim Maloney will present a free history lecture on the Battles of El Paso at noon, May 11, at the Fort Bliss Museum and Study Center Auditorium.
