1-7 holds Family
Readiness Day in preparation for deployment
April 21, the 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery held a Family Readiness Day at Army Community Services for Soldiers that will be deploying to Korea in June, and their family members, as well as the remainder of the “No Fear!” Battalion. About 700 Soldiers and family members attended the event. There were 25 booths that provided a variety of information for deploying Soldiers, family members, single Soldiers and rear detachment commanders. This event allowed Soldiers and family members the opportunity to ask any questions or voice any concerns they had with the pre-deployment and deployment phases. Each booth contained different information on the numerous programs that Fort Bliss and the El Paso community had to offer for family members left behind. There were representatives from 108th ADA Brigade legal, housing, finance, transportation, youth services, TRICARE, American Red Cross and the Armed Forces Bank. The ACS also had representatives from Family Advocacy, Mobilization and Deployment, Relocation, and Army Emergency Relief. Each 1-7 Btry. and company Family Readiness Group had booths, as did the Protestant Women of Church and the Catholic Women of Church. Fort Bliss and the El Paso community were not alone in supporting this occasion; the readiness day gained Army-wide visibility and two representatives from Army One Source flew from Washington, D.C. to support the Soldiers and families of 1-7 ADA. The event kicked off with comments from the 1-7 Bn. Commander, Lt. Col. Brant Dayley, his wife Nancy Dayley, as well as Nancy Thomas-Mainor, the family services coordinator at the CSC. Afterwards, the Soldiers and family members were free to check out booths and asked questions. The Family Readiness Day not only provided the Soldiers and family members with pertinent information, but also allowed them time to spend with their families. Free hot dogs, chips, popcorn, snow cones and drinks were provided to all that attended. Door prizes were also given out. The 108th ADA Bde. Commander, Col. David Mann, and his wife Robyn, attended Family Readiness Day where they took part in all of the activities assisting and learning from Soldiers alike. Col. and Mrs. Mann presented Brandie Williams and Julie Runyan with the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade Volunteer of the Year Awards. Williams is the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 1-7 Family Readiness Group Leader and Runyan is the 1-7 ADA Family Readiness Group Treasurer. Each woman spends countless hours not only working in their official capacity but also assisting in the countless other areas of the Battalion FRG. At the end of the day, the Soldiers and family members were provided with the knowledge necessary to endure the upcoming deployment and their time apart. As a token of appreciation, Dayley and 1-7 ADA Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. James Carr, presented battalion coins to the representatives and volunteers that worked so hard to ensure a successful Family Readiness Day.
