Community


Memorial Day ceremony

In honor of the men and women who died serving our nation, a Memorial Day Service will be held May 30 at 11:45 a.m. at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery. J.E.B. Stuart, Marshall, Robert E. Lee and Cassidy Gates will all be open for entry to the base. The event is open to the public. Seating is limited and around 2,000 people are expected to attend, therefore, early arrival or bringing your own chair is suggested.

Radio messages to troops 

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service recently introduced its Patriot Family Connection program to help connect deployed military members with their loved ones back home. Messages can be recorded 24 hours a day, free of charge, and are forwarded to American Forces Network Radio. Anyone can record a message by calling (800) 713-1302 and following the prompts. Military survey
Sam Houston State University Department of Political Science in Huntsville Texas is conducting research to measure the satisfaction levels of spouses of Military Reservists and National Guard members who are currently called up and forward deployed in regards to their life as a military spouse. The questions are taken from a bi-annual survey given to traditionally defined active duty spouses. The final report will be furnished to State and National Legislators along with the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Reservist Affairs at the Pentagon. Diablo tickets

Free tickets for Military Night at the El Paso Diablos baseball game are now available at ITR, Bldg. 1743 and PAO, Bldg. 15. Game night June 1 at 7:05 p.m. at Cohen Stadium. The 62nd Army Band will perform on the concourse. Tickets on a first come, first served basis.

Road closure

A road closure is scheduled from Tuesday through Thursday to install a new communications manhole at the corner of Abernathy Avenue and Carter Road and a new storm drain pipe across Carter Road.

Financial liability class

ACS closure

For the Memorial Day holiday, the Army Community Service and Family Assistance Center located in Bldg. 2494 will be closed tomorrow through Monday and will re-open Tuesday. Recycling update

Ammunition supply point closure


The McGregor Range Ammunition Supply Point will be closed for its quarterly inventory June 6 through 10. Ammunition issues and turn-ins will not be scheduled during this time period.

Auditions

El Paso Mystery Troupe in cooperation with WallacetownUSA is conducting auditions for singers dancers and actors. Performers will be used for western reenactments and interactive western theater and other venues such as the 50s, the roaring 20s and pirate shows. For information, call 544-5992.

Theater camp registration


KIDS-N-CO. is taking registrations for the company’s 2005 summer theater camps. Two-week Kinder Camp sessions for children ages 5 through 7 begin May 31, June 13, July 5 and July 18. Kinder Camps are every weekday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and cost $100 per session. Four-week Production Camp sessions for young people ages 8 through 14 begin May 31 and July 5. Production Camps are every weekday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and cost $200 per session. Registration forms are available by calling the theater, 820-1794, afternoons.

Dog obedience class

Three levels of dog obedience training, sponsored by the Rio Grande Obedience Club, will be held on the following dates and at the following times:

BASIC I

62nd Army Band recruiting

Diabetes management

Korean War veteran reunion

The 11th annual Korean War Veterans reunion will be held Oct. 3 through 6 in Laughlin, Nev. Stuttering support

If you stutter you are not alone. There is a place for you here. The El Paso Chapter of the National Stuttering Association (a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of people who stutter) provides a safe and friendly atmosphere for people who stutter, and those affected by stuttering. At meetings you will be able to meet others who stutter, share experiences, practice your speaking skills, and work on moving forward with dignity and respect.

Meetings are held every 3rd Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at 109 S. Festival Drive.

AAFES recognition

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service received the prestigious Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from the Good Housekeeping Institute for its Baby’s Choice Infant Formula line. Products approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute may be advertised in Good Housekeeping Magazine and are backed by their consumer’s policy, which states that if a product bearing the Seal proves to be defective within two years of purchase, Good Housekeeping will replace the product or refund the purchase price.

Street festivals


The El Paso Empowerment Zone will sponsor a series of three street festivals beginning in June on Texas Avenue, from Campbell to Noble Streets. The first of the three festivals, the Custom Car and Chopper Festival, will take place June 18 and 19. The Texas Salsa Festival will be held Sept. 4, and the Texas Rasquache Art Festival will be held Oct. 29. The 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade is sponsoring “Building a Successful Stepfamily” June 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Officers’ Club. Free summer meals


Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services will once again sponsor its Summer Food Service Program beginning May 25 through Aug. 12. Meals will be provided free of cost to military and civilian children, ages 1 through 18, Monday through Friday. The main Child Development Center, Bldg. 1730 on Haan Road, and the Logan Child Development Center, Bldg. 3500 on Story Road, will each serve breakfast from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Fort Bliss YouthPlex, Bldg. 195 on Chaffee Road, will serve lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a snack from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. In addition to the free meals offered Monday through Friday, every Wednesday, beginning June 1 there will be a free activity and lunch day at Kelly Park, available to military and civilian children, ages 1 to 18 years. Also, every Thursday beginning June 2 there will be free lunches available to children in the Van Horn Housing Area. In accordance with federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, political beliefs, or disability. Children’s special events


Child and Youth Services will be sponsoring special events during the summer.

Gus and Goldie will be visiting June 8 at Kelly Park; June 14 at Logan Height Center; June 17 at Main Post Center; June 20 at the Main YouthPlex and June 20 at Logan SAS.

The EP Fitness health Van will be at the YouthPlex June 3 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and June 10 at Logan SAS from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

El Paso Patriots Soccer team will be at Logan SAS from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kids bowling

Starting in June and lasting throughout the summer the Fort Bliss Bowling Center will offer group bowling lessons for children selected Saturdays, every month of summer. This is a great opportunity for children to learn a very exciting sport and have fun at the same time.  From noon to 2 p.m., children will be able to learn new skills, bowl with friends, and have a free snack all for just $8. “A League of Their Own” will begin June 4 and the rest of the dates are as follows: June 18, July 9, July 23, Aug. 6, and Aug. 20.  For information, call 568-6272.

Pool hours

The Community Pool, adjacent to the Officers’ Club, will open Friday for the summer season. Summer hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, including holidays. The Community Pool features an enclosed tube slide and double loop slide as well as a large, shaded sitting area with indoor/outdoor carpeting.

Replica Aquatic Center summer hours begin friday also. Monday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The pool offers a variety of swim classes and open swim is available daily from 1 p.m. until closing.
Patrons may swim at either the Community or Replica Pools at a cost of $1 for adults, 75 cents for children 6 to 12 years and free for children 5 and under. Guests are $2 per person. A swim card may be purchased for just $20 and is good for 30 visits at either the Replica or Community Pools.

Officers’ Club members may show their MWR membership card at either the Community or Replica pools for free admittance any day of the week. Member’s children may obtain a pool pass upon membership verification on their initial visit, which entitles them to free use of both pools throughout the summer. Taco Tuesday

The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center on Biggs Airfield introduces its “all-you-can-eat” Taco Tuesday June 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will feature an assortment of hard-shell and soft beef and chicken tacos, rice, beans, chips and salsa, a variety of desserts, and a beverage. Margaritas and imported beer will also be available for purchase. Pay only $7.95 for adults and $4 for children. Father’s Day

Birthday bowling packages
The Fort Bliss Bowling Center offers four different birthday packages, all at unbeatably low prices. There is a minimum of six children required for a party and each package includes party hats and balloons. The get-together is set up by the Fort Bliss Bowling Center Staff to the rear of the lanes.

Summer reading program


Mickelsen Library’s 2005 Summer Reading program: “Find New Friends in a Book!”

During the heat of the upcoming summer, wouldn’t you like to slip into someplace cool and relax with a few friends?  You can, by visiting the “Enchanted Reading Forest” at Mickelsen Community Library.  Children between the ages of 2 and 12 are eligible to participate during the annual summer reading program.
Registration for the program has begun; reading begins June 1 and continues through Aug. 6.  Each child will come to the library and check out the books he or she would like to read. When they return the books to the library, they will record them on a reading record kept at the library.  Depending on the child’s age, they will earn a sticker to place on the reading record for every two to five books that have been read. Aug. 13 we will host an awards ceremony and party for all the participants.  Each child who participates in the reading program will receive a goody bag of surprises, and children who read at least 10 books will qualify for a certificate.  The top three readers in the four age groups will receive special prizes. Summer camp

School-Age Services will offer full-day structured and supervised activities during the EPISD summer break May 26 through Aug. 12. Open to all CYS children entering grades 2nd to 6th in the 2005-06 school year. The fun begins daily at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Both SAS sites, the YouthPlex, B-195 or the Logan Youth Center, B-3508 will open at 5:30 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. for our working parents. Join us in field trips, tours, bowling, roller-skating, computers, matinees, gooney golf, tennis, ceramics, cooking and craft projects, swimming, picnics, sports, and 4-H projects. Fees are based upon total family income and can range between $28 to $91 a week or $18 a day. Ask about our 20 percent multiple child discount for siblings in regular care at either our CDC or SAS programs or with an FCC provider. Families must be registered with Child and Youth Services before attending. Spaces are limited and advance payments are required. You will need to bring with you, child’s shot records and physical forms, child’s birth certificate, your military ID and most recent LES(s). Bliss’ biggest loser


Stout Physical Fitness Center is announcing the Fort Bliss Biggest Loser Challenge. The challenge will take place June 4 through Sept. 10, and the cost will be $300. Class is limited to 25 people.  In order to participate the contestant has to complete a health history form and turn in a physicians clearance form. There will be a fitness assessment during the first session and last session. The contestants will work out in a group setting with trainers three times a week, record their daily intakes in a food diary seven days a week.  Before and after pictures will be taken and posted at Stout Physical Fitness Center.  Weigh-ins will take place end of every week; and body fat will be tested end of the month.  Every contestant will receive either several coupons or a free punch card in order to participate in the aerobic classes.  The contestant with the highest weight lost to initial body weight will be announced “Fort Bliss Biggest Loser.”  Prizes will be awarded through out the challenge with the winner receiving a commercial quality treadmill. Pick up applications at Stout Physical Fitness Center and Civilian Fitness Zone, Bldg. 251.  All application and payment are due no later than 4 p.m. June 3, at Stout Physical Fitness Snack Bar.

Underwood kids

The Underwood Golf Complex is accepting applications for its “Underwood Kids” golf classes, to be held from June 7 through 11 and June 14 through 17 (eight lessons). PGA Golf Pro and Club Manager Bobby Kaerwer will oversee the sessions, which are open to children 6 to 18. Classes will be held Tuesday - Friday and participants may sign up for a class at 8, 9 or 10 a.m. Classes are limited to 10 students per session. The fee is $50 for the eight lessons, which includes instruction on the fundamentals of golf, lessons, clubs, range ball, visor, rulebook, putting tournament and cookout. Community Pool

Join MWR June 25 and July 30 for a wet and wild time at the Community Pool’s first ever “Dive Inn”!  Join us for friends, family, and food as we play great movies at the pool!  Parents and kids can arrive at the starlit cinema at 7 p.m. or patrons can come early in the day and stay until night. Movie starts at 8:30 p.m. Cost is only $1 and snacks will be provided for an extra cost. Watching a movie will never be the same. Fort Bliss Community Pool Dive Inn- it’s like a Drive Inn, only not as dry. For more information contact Lauren Short at 568-7013. 
CDS special openings

The Child Development Center now offers special hours of operation every Saturday at its main location in Building 1730 on Haan Road. Hours are 1 p.m. to 12 a.m. Cost for payday weekend care is $3.50 per hour first child and $3 per hour for each additional child for CAT 2 and up- $2.50 per hour and $2 per hour for each additional child in CAT 1,ages 2 months to 12 years, are eligible for the care. For a special opening, a minimum reservation of 20 children is required. When there are not enough reservations to warrant opening, alternative care will be offered. AER pilot program

The Fort Bliss AER Office is going to do away with the appointment schedule and run a test program for 120 days on a walk in basis. This program is an effort to streamline the AER Loan process and to make AER more user friendly and decrease the amount of time the Soldier is away from the unit. Soldiers needing AER assistance can walk in and pick up a loan application or use forms flow and when they have completed the loan application return it to the AER office with all the required documentation and signatures. Emergency Leaves still have priority and will always be processed first. During the last couple of months the AER work load has increased nearly 60 percent we feel this is partially due to the changes made over the last year to better serve the soldier.

JEFC summer camp

The Junior Enlisted Family Center Ceramic Shop will be offering a youth summer camp from June to August. The first session will be from 9 a.m. to noon, the other from 1 to 3 p.m. The camp is open to children ages 6 and up and the cost is $5 per session. For information, call 568-7291.
