Grand opening
Fort Bliss Garrison Commander, Col. Bryon Greenwald and Post Exchange
Manager Ted Wulff will conduct a ribbon cutting tomorrow officially
opening Box Office Video. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 10
a.m. in Bldg. 198, on Custer Road. Box Office Video will provide for
rental of thousands of movies.
32nd Change of Command
Brig. Gen. Richard McCabe will relinquish command of the 32nd Army Air
and Missile Defense Command to Brig. Gen. Francis Mahon during a change-of-command
ceremony scheduled for 8:30 a.m. July 22 at Noel Field. Mahon currently
serves as deputy commanding general for the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery
Center and Fort Bliss.
32nd farewell dinner
The 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command will host a farewell dinner
in honor of Brig. Gen. Richard McCabe, outgoing commander, at 6 p.m.
July 21 at The Centennial. Dress is casual.

Distinquished award
Nominations for the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian
Humanitarian Award must by submitted no later than than July 28. Nominations
for this award are for contributions made between Jan. 1 to Dec. 31,
2004. This award is to an individual or organization who has demonstrated
exceptional patriotism and humanitarian concern for members of the United
States Armed Forces or families. An endorsement by a Major Army command

Information exchange
Information Exchange, an hour-long monthly meeting designed to keep
Soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians informed about upcoming
post events, activities and programs, is held the last Monday of every
month at 9 a.m. at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Ballroom. The
agenda features speakers from various organizations, including Tricare,
the NCO Wives Club, AAFES, ASYMCA, MWR, and more. The next meeting will

Excalibur Steppers
The Excalibur Steppers are looking for new members ages 5 to 15. They
are invited to come out and join the team. Practices are held Monday
through Friday. The Tuesday and Thursday practices are held at Stout
Gym from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday practice is
done at my home in Northeast El Paso starting at 7 p.m. To become an
Excalibur Stepper students must maintain a “C” average in

Kelly Park
Under the Residential Housing Initiative, Kelly Park on Marshall Road
is now operated and maintained by GMH Military Housing. The facility

tank, big grills, event tents, etc.) will now be located at Biggs Park.

German American Night Run
The 12th Annual First Light Federal Credit Union German-American Oktoberfest
Night Run is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Kelly Park. The event is open
to all community members. Participants may sign up for either the 8K
Run (5 miles) or the 5K Fun Walk (3.1 miles). Entry fees are $15 in
advance and $20 the day of race. Military unit teams may run in the
military competition, with the top five individual finishing times going
toward their team’s overall time. Teams may include up to ten
individuals, and the entry fee is $120 per military unit team. First
through third place teams receive cash awards to their unit funds. Information
sheets with registration forms are available at Stout Fitness Center,
Fort Bliss ITR, most El Paso sport stores, and YMCA and YWCA locations.

Early registrants may mail their registration form and check made payable

begin at 4 p.m. and will include Oktoberfest music and a variety of
entertainment, along with the sale of German Bratwurst and pastries
and other refreshments. Proceeds from the race will benefit MWR and
the German Air Force charity organizations “Helping Hands”
and “Aid for the Needy,” which have been reaching out to
the needy on both sides of the Texas/Mexico border for more than 20

Teen council
Fort Bliss Youth Services is establishing a new Teen Council. This group
will be actively involved with the planning and the development
of activities offered at Fort Bliss Youth Services, to include organizing
teen programs such as fieldtrips, dances, community outreach, and youth
sponsorship. Youth between 13 and 18 years of age who want to make a
difference within their community are needed. For information, call

Bowling league
Aug. 23, the Fort Bliss Bowling Center will host an organizational meeting
for the Center Men’s Handicap Bowling League. At present, 20 teams
are interested; however there is room for 32 teams. Aug. 19, the Fort
Bliss Bowling Center will host an organizational meeting for the Friday
Seniors Handicap Bowling. Participants must be 50 years or older. At
present, 18 teams are interested; however there is room for 24 teams.

Youth Services football
Fort Bliss Youth Services will conduct registrations for the Fort Bliss
Panthers and Fort Bliss Jaguars tackle football teams now through July
31. Ages 8 to 11 are invited to register for the competitive tackle
football league. Since this is a competitive league, the 50 percent
participation rule is not in effect. Parents will be required to attend
a sportsmanship class before their children are allowed to participate
in the city league. Football registrants must be Child and Youth Services
members. Fees are $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional

Army Soldier Show
The 2005 U.S. Army Soldier Show comes to Fort Bliss Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
and Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Soldier Hall, Bldg. 2, to perform “Operation
America Cares,” a 90-minute song and dance production that expresses
the importance of giving deployed Soldiers a touch of home. The show
will focus on how Soldiers deal with the stresses of war and long deployments.
Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis; no tickets are issued.

Wine and dine
The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club cordially invites you to sample
the exquisite wine of Del Norte Fine Wines and eat a delectable four
course meal at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Wine and Dinner Pairing,
Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Each meal will be accompanied by a complimentary
pairing of wine to bring out the taste of the food presented. Tickets

Rock the Fort Music Fest
Fort Bliss Morale, Welfare, and Recreation is pleased to host our second
Rock the Fort Music Fest July 23, from noon to 10 p.m. at Kelly Park
on Marshall Rd. Admission is free to festival grounds. Scheduled activities
include live bands and performances from Flashback, After Affect, The
Compromise, the 62nd Army Show Band with special guests Sherman Hemsley,
Lt. Col. Michael Maloney and the Fungi Mungle, as well as food and beverage
vendors, free Mini Golf, Pedal Car Races, Jumping Balloons, Dunk Tank,
Slip-n-Dip, face painting, treasure hunt, art displays and sales, car
shows/displays. Microbrew and wine tasting will be available in the
Beer and Wine Garden for $15, which includes 15-2.5 ounce
samplings of microbrew beers and specialty wines, snacks, a souvenir
tasting glass, backpack, limited edition event t-shirt, wine opener,
sunglasses, key chain, candy, and Hawaiian lei. Fireworks are scheduled

Dive In
Join MWR July 30 and August 20 for a wet and wild time at the Community
Pool’s Dive In. Join us for fun and food as we play great
movies at the pool. Parents and kids can arrive at the starlit cinema
at 7 p.m. or patrons can come early in the day and stay until night.
The free movie starts at 8:30 p.m. This is a special event, no outside
food or beverages are allowed; however, patrons may purchase snacks
for a minimal cost. Watching a movie will never be the same. Fort Bliss
Community Pool Dive In - it’s like a Drive Inn, only not as dry.

Dance and ballet classes
Youth Services dance classes will be held through July 29 at Fort Bliss
Youth Center, Bldg 195. Participants must be registered with Central
Registration to participate. Payment is due at time of registration
in order to ensure placement in the class. To maintain enrollment in
class, payment is due two weeks prior to the beginning of month. For

Rhythm and Dance 1: For 3 to 5 year olds on Wednesday and Friday from
3 to 3:30 p.m. (Transportation will be provided for weekly children
who attend CDC) and from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Cost for classes is $35 per
month. This class will combine gross motor skills such as skipping,
jumping, gallops, and other moves to music. Emphasis will be placed
on teaching the enjoyment of movement, listening to music, learning
to count beats, and musical expression. One recital per year will be
presented to showcases students progress.
Rhythms and Dances 2: for elementary school age children Wednesday and
Friday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 5 p.m. Cost is $35 per month.
This class will help advance learning dances such as basic hip-hop and
jazz, country line dances, and creative movement in preparation for
more advanced classes. One recital per year will be presented to showcases
students progress.
Pre-ballet: for 3 to 5 year olds Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 3:30
p.m. (Transportation will be provided for weekly children who attend
CDC) and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. The Instructor will introduce
basic ballet movements to students, concentrating on developing gross
motor skills, listening to music, learning to count beats, and musical
expression. These are half hour classes designed to prepare the dancer
for primary ballet class. One recital per year will be presented.
Primary ballet: for school age elementary children Wednesday and Friday
from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. Primary ballet for elementary
students follows a primary syllabus that includes plies, tendus, chasses,
gallops skips, and other preparatory ballet exercises. One recital per
year will be presented to showcases students progress.
Ballet 1: for elementary students ages 6 and older Wednesday and Friday
4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Cost for this class is $50 per month. Class is geared
to those who are interested in a serious ballet program. The course
will follow a structured syllabus that will focus on developing a ballet
technique. One recital per year will be presented to showcases students
progress.
Veterinary services
The Vet Clinic offers Walk-In Wellness clinics (vaccines, microchips,
deworming, heartworm and feline leukemia tests) every Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. If your pet
needs to be seen for something other than vaccines, we offer sick call
appointments every Tuesday and Thursday, call 569-2266 to schedule an
appointment. Lastly, our lobby hours for clearing, pet registration
and for sale of Heartguard medications and flea and tick preventatives
are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.; and
Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.
AAU Bench Press Competition
Fort Bliss MWR Sports will host an Amateur Athletic Union Bench Press
Competition Sept. 24 at Stout Gym. This is a military Bench Press National
Championship and is open to all branches of the service. Weigh-ins begin
at 8 a.m. and competition starts at 10 a.m. Cost for participating for
males and females is $30, which includes the entry fee, a t-shirt and
competition medial for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finished. AAU Powerlifting
rules apply and may be accessed at www.aausports.org. All entries must
be postmarked no later than Sept. 3 and should be sent certified mail
with return receipt. The event is sponsored by the Fort Bliss Buffalo

Cheerleading
Fort Bliss Youth Services will conduct registration for the Fort Bliss
Panthers and Fort Bliss Jaguars cheerleading squads now through Aug.
1. Youth, ages 8 to 11, are invited to register for the cheerleading
squads that will be supporting Fort Bliss Youth Services in the city
competitive tackle football league. All cheerleading registrants must
be YS members. Fees are $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional
child. Also, parents will be required to attend a sportsmanship class

ACS classes
Army Community Service offers a variety of services to assist the Army
family. The following are classes being offered:
Expectant Sibling Classes: ACS is offering an Expectant Sibling Class
July 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the ACS, Bldg. 2494 Ricker Road, next to
the Stanton Movie Theatre. This class is to educate parents on how to
prevent and reduce sibling rivalry. It also educates children ages 3
to 8 years old on what to expect from a new baby and upon completion
of the class they along with parents will receive a certificate. If

Playgroups
The Army Community Services Center’s Toddler Playgroup has permanently
changed location to the playroom at the Ft. Bliss Bowling Alley on Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon ages 18 months to 31/2 years old.
The Toddler Playgroup will meet during the summer months at Kelly Park
on Tuesdays and Biggs Water Park on Thursdays. In case of inclement
weather the group will meet at the Fort Bliss Bowling Alley. The Infant
Playgroup will meet on Thursday’s at the Fort Bliss Youthplex
from 10 to 11 a.m. ages 5 months to 18 months. The playgroups are an
excellent way to meet other military parents within the Fort Bliss Community
while enhancing your child’s social, emotional and physical development.

Education Fair
Fort Bliss will host its annual Education Information Fair for all military
families from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 1 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference
Center, Bldg. 11199 at Biggs Army Airfield. El Paso area school superintendents,
principals, counselors and PTA presidents will be in attendance to welcome
new families, pass out information and answer questions. Representatives
from various school departments such as Pupil Services, Transportation,
Special Educa-tion, Gifted and Talented, Nursing, Athletics, Health
Services and Food Services will also be on hand to answer questions.
Representatives from El Paso, Ysleta, Socorro, Anthony, Clint and Canutillo
School Districts will also be present. Thirty five parochial, private,
homeschool, and charter schools will be represented, as well as the
Region 19 Headstart, Prevent Blindness, Advocacy Inc. and Fort Bliss
Child Care programs. Additionally, a representative from Childcare Management
Services will be available to assist families with financial concerns
regarding daycare. This event will provide an excellent opportunity
to families with school age children to meet and gather information
from various schools and to familiarize themselves with all the school
programs available in the El Paso area. For more information, contact

School registration
Kindergarten and Preschool registration is now being accepted for the
05/06 school year. Kindergarten Monday through Friday noon until 3 p.m.
at the Main CDC, Preschool Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 to
11 a.m. at Main CDC, Preschool Monday through Friday 8:30 to 11 a.m.
at Logan CDC. Rates are based on total family income and parent’s

Motorcycle show
As part of the Rock the Fort Music Fest July 23, MWR will host a motorcycle
show for all Soldiers and Fort Bliss community members who wish to show
off their motorcycles. Participation is limited to the first 60

Karaoke
The Officers’ Club hosts karaoke in the Pershing Pub every Friday
“Elvis” Rob Langford sets up at 5:30 and plays until 11
p.m., providing MWR patrons with one of the largest selections of karaoke
songs in El Paso. Relax, sing-a-long, and have a nice cold beverage
to begin the weekend with your friends at the Fort Bliss Officers’

The Fort Bliss Bowling Center hosts karaoke nights for MWR patrons and
guests Thursday and Friday nights. Karaoke King takes the stage beginning
at 7:30 and plays until 11 p.m. Thursday and 12:30 a.m. Friday in the
center’s lounge. As a reminder, all non-active duty military guests,
including family members and civilians, must be at least 21 to drink

The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center on Biggs Airfield hosts
karaoke nights for MWR patrons and guests Friday nights from 5 to 10

A League of Their Own
Starting in June and lasting throughout the summer, MWR Special Events
will implement a new program at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center. The center
will offer group bowling lessons for kids on selected Saturdays, every
month of summer. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn a very
exciting sport and have fun at the same time! From noon to 2 p.m., kids
will be able to learn new skills, bowl with friends, and have a free
snack (hot dog, chips, and soda) all for just $8. “A League of
Their Own” will begin June 4 and the rest of the dates are as
follows: July 23, Aug. 6, and Aug 20. For more information regarding

Bowling Center birthday packages
The Fort Bliss Bowling Center offers four different birthday packages,
all at unbeatably low prices. There is a minimum of six children required
for a party and each package includes party hats and balloons. The get-together
is set up by the Fort Bliss Bowling Center Staff to the rear of the
lanes. Our packages are as follows:
Package #1 is $6 per child and includes a hot dog with chips and a fountain
drink, one free game of bowling and one free shoe rental.
Package #2 is $6.50 per child and includes one slice of pepperoni or
sausage pizza. A 12 oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and
one free shoe rental.
Package #3 is $6.50 per child and includes one slice of cheese pizza,
a 12 oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and one free shoe
rental.
Package #4 is $6.50 per child and includes one regular burger, a 12
oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and one free shoe rental.
Birthday parties or other special events are even available for booking
on Saturdays. The center also has automatic bumpers for lots of family

CDS special openings
The Child Development Center now offers special hours of operation every
Saturday at its main location in Building 1730 on Haan Road. Hours are
1 p.m. to midnight. Cost for payday weekend care is $3.50 per hour first
child and $3 per hour for each additional child for CAT 2 and up, $2.50
per hour and $2 per hour for each additional child in CAT 1, ages 2
months to 12 years, are eligible for the care. For a special opening,
a minimum reservation of 20 children is required. When there are not
enough reservations to warrant opening, alternative care will be offered.

ITR cabin rentals
Stop by the ITR office for your Ruidoso getaway. ITR now has a listing

AER
Fort Bliss AER office is running a pilot program. The Fort Bliss AER
Office is going to do away with the appointment schedule and run a test
program for 120 days on a walk in basis. This program is an effort to
streamline the AER Loan process and to make AER more user friendly and
decrease the amount of time the Soldier is away from the unit. Soldiers
wanting AER assistance can walk in and pick up a loan application or
use forms flow and when they have completed the loan application return
it to the AER office with all the required documentation and signatures.
This program will run similar to the commanders referral program in
which the loan application is dropped of by 1 p.m. the loan is ready
for pick up the same business day, after 1 p.m. the loan is ready the
following business day. Emergency Leaves still have priority and will
always be processed fist. During the last couple of months the AER work
load has increased nearly 60% we feel this is partially due to the changes
made over the last year to better serve the soldier. If this program
is successful as we feel it will be, Fort Bliss AER office will lead
the way in ensuring our soldiers emergency’s are expedited.
Lock and Leave Storage
Lock & Leave Storage invites all military personnel, their dependents,
retirees and other individuals with military ID cards to store their
personal goods with us. Moving frequently with PSCs and TDYs, a person
can accumulate a lot of stuff. Lock & Leave, your official on-post
storage center, offers specials such as Welcome, Buddy and Frequent

Rod and Gun Club
The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club Is located In Bldg. 3730 off Railroad
Drive and Deer on Roy Johnson Lane. The kitchen opens on Fridays from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility offers trap, skeet, rifle, pistol, archery,
black powder, and plinking ranges, and a five stand sporting clays range,
pro shop, snack bar (open weekends) and banquet facilities. Concealed
carry classes and Instruction In shotgun, rifle, and pistol reloading
are also available. The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club Is open to the public.

Sunday brunches
The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club offers a Champagne Sunday Brunch
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday except holiday weekends. The cost
is $9.95 for members and $11.95 for nonmembers, $6.00 for children ages
7 to 11 and free for children 6 and under. Reservations are recommended,

PCS/ETS
PCSing to a new installation? The Army Community Service relocation
programs will provide you with automated welcome packets on any DoD
military installation worldwide while you wait. Assigned to an isolated
location far from an installation? Not a problem, Internet access will
provide localized information. How do you find that isolated location
within CONUS? Computerized route-maps will take you there. Soldiers
clearing the installation are advised that strip maps, showing the location
of all agencies that must be cleared, are available at ACS relocation
desk at Bldg. 2494, which is also a required stop in the clearing process.
Avoid becoming “geographically challenged” by clearing us

Texas Veteran’s Home
The Ambrioso Guillen Texas Veterans Home will open its doors with a
grand opening ceremony on Tuesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. The ceremony

Roswell collection
Insights, El Paso Science Museum will host a special out of this world
exhibit. The Roswell Collection will be on display beginning Saturday
July 16. This exhibit, a replica of the original UFO Museum and Research
Center in Roswell, N.M., will take the visitor through the pages of
history, pose questions you may not want to ask, and give answers you
may not want to hear. Most importantly, you may decide whether this
is Science Fiction or Science Fact. Accompanying this unique collection
will be an exhibit of known aliens; our own space program. We will follow
NASA programs and join the ranks of aliens and venture out into space.
Space once called the final frontier, is now available in fact and fantasy.
Vacation Bible School
Parents of children from pre-school through 6th grade are invited to
register their children now for vacation Bible school to be held Aug.
1 through 5 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The theme of the session is

El Paso Surf Club
The El Paso Surf Club presents a summer volleyball coed series. The
tournament will take place July 16 at Madaline Park on Cincinnati Street
at 9:30 a.m. This is a one day event. Registration starts at 8:45 a.m.
and the cost of registration is $75.00 per team. The format for the
tournament will be: beginner division tournament (beginner skill level/playing
to have a blast), and advanced division tournament (playing competitively
for years). Each team will consist of four males and two females while
playing on the court. Each team is allowed to have a total of eight
players per team. Each team will be placed in a division which will
play all teams in that pool. The top two teams per pool will advance
to the playoffs. Prizes will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place in the
beginner division and the advanced division. Free refreshments will
be provided all day and BBQ grills will be on sit “lit and ready.”

Satchmo jazz fest
We’re keeping the spirit of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong
alive with live jazz music and authentic New Orleans Cuisine at the
Officers’ Club on the famous jazz player’s birthday Aug.
4 at 4:30 p.m. The event will include a rich sampling of films and clips
featuring Louis Armstrong and his contemporaries, a walk-thru sampling
of food prepared by New Orleans native and Officers’ Club head
chef, AB Bradford, wine tasting from Del Norte Fine Wines, and a special
tribute to Satchmo himself provided by some very special guests. It’s
a celebration of food, music, and fun and it’s only happening
at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club.

Bradal, Quinceañera Dream Fair

Sgt. Rubalcava Memorial Car Show
LULAC Council No. 4457 will host its first Sgt. Isela Rubalcava Memorial
Car Show, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at Bill Childress Elementary,
7700 Cap Carter Road (off Doniphan), west of Canutillo. Admission: $3

The show is named for the Canutillo native killed while serving in Iraq.

Ruidoso Art Festival
The 34th annual event is July 29-31, at the Ruidoso Convention Center
on Highway 48. Sponsored by the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce,
the juried show has more than 100 artists displaying various forms of

The festival has been named by the Harris Poll as one of the top art
shows in the U.S. and No. 1 in Southern New Mexico. Works include painting,

the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce will be held.
Mission Trail Harvest Market
Local farmers, bakers and craftspeople will display their wares at an
open-air farmers market 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, July 30-Oct. 29,
at the Tigua parking lots on Zaragosa and Socorro Road (across from

The market is a joint project of the cities of Socorro and El Paso,
the Texas Cooperative Extension Service and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo

figs, squash, bread and baked goods. Arts and crafts vendors and live

Farmer’s Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing

The El Paso Chorale Chamber Choir has one opening for a paid position

White Sands Missile Range will hold a special 60th anniversary open
house for Trinity Site where the world’s first atomic bomb was

Fairgrounds parking lot on U.S. 54/70 in Alamogordo; departure is 8

Tennis Club and Fitness Zone
The Fort Bliss Tennis Club and Fitness Zone offers a five-court tennis
club, fitness area with a 20-piece circuit training room, and two practice

under their parent’s supervision while working out. The facility

Swim lessons
The following are classes being offered at Replica Pool Aug. 8 through
12. Stroke improvement from noon to 2 p.m. cost $30. You must have past
swimming level 3 or higher.
Lifeguard readiness from 2 to 5 p.m. class, cost $40. You must have
past swimming level 3 or higher and be 10 years old or older. Topics
include swimming and water drills, rescues in/out of water, basic first
aid, using a backboard, water entries to include lifeguard stands.
