32nd change of command
Brig. Gen. Richard McCabe will relinquish command of the 32nd Army Air
and Missile Defense Command to Brig. Gen. Francis Mahon during a change
of command ceremony scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday at Noel Field. Mahon
currently serves as deputy commanding general for the U.S. Army Air
Defense Artillery Center and Fort Bliss.
32nd farewell dinner
The 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command will host a farewell dinner
in honor of Brig. Gen. Richard McCabe, outgoing commander, at 6 p.m.

Information exchange
“Information exchange,” an hour-long monthly meeting designed
to keep Soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians informed about
upcoming post events, activities and programs, is held the last Monday
of every month at 9 a.m. at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Ballroom.
The agenda features speakers from various organizations, including Tricare,
the NCO Wives Club, AAFES, ASYMCA, MWR, and more. The next gathering

Vacation Bible School
Parents of children from pre-school through 6th grade are invited to
register their children now for vacation Bible school to be held Aug.
1 through 5 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The theme of the session is
“Going on a Prayer Safari.” Classes will be conducted from
9 a.m. to noon. The Bible school will be conducted at Bauman Hall in

Big Band dance
A Big Band dance with Mike Caranda and his 12 peice Swing orchestra
featuring the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and music of the Big

Airport travel advisory
Summer travel has begun a The El Paso International Airport, and airlines
are recommending that all passengers arrive one and half-hours before
departure. The early arrival time is necessary in order to facilitate
and expedite the screening process handled by the Transportation Security
Administration. The early morning and early afternoon are peak travel

Excalibur Steppers
The Excalibur Steppers are looking for new members. Ages 5 to 15 are
invited to come out and join our team. Practices are held Monday through
Friday. The Tuesday and Thursday practices are held at Stout Gym from
7:30 to 9 p.m. The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday practice is done at
my home in Northeast El Paso starting at 7 p.m. To become an Excalibur
Stepper students must maintain a “C” average in school.

CERT training schedule
The El Paso Police Department is offering free Community Emergency Response
Training through December at the Police Academy 2300 Scenic Drive. The
20 hour courses will be held Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30
p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates: Aug.
16 through 18, 20, Sept. 13 through 15, 17, Oct. 11 through 13, 15,
Nov. 15 through 17, 19, and Dec. 6 through 8, 10. For information, call

Mailbox theft tips
The El Paso Police Department and the United States Postal Service would
like to warn the community about mailbox theft and to take precautions
when sending or receiving mail. If you believe that you have been the
victim of mail theft, here are a few steps to follow: report the incident
to the Police Department at 832-4400. Report the incident to your local
post office and postal inspector. Contact your bank and credit card
holders. Check your bank and credit card statements for unexplained
transactions. If anyone has information on possible subjects involved
in mailbox theft they are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 566-8477
and remain anonymous.
Keep El Paso Beautiful
Keep El Paso Beautiful now has fully stocked tool sheds just waiting
to be used to keep El Paso beautiful. All necessary items (push brooms,
shovels, rakes, gas weed eater, gloves, and trash bags) for beautification
and/or clean-up project are available to any person or group at no charge

Toys for Tots
The 4th annual Toys for Tots Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 25 at
the Lone Star Golf Club. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a
9 a.m. shotgun start. It is a four person scramble: $260 per team or
$65 per person plus a new unwrapped toy worth $5 or more. Fee includes
green fee, cart, lunch, and goodie bags. Prizes will be awarded for
longest, straightest drive and specialty holes. All proceeds go towards
buying toys for underprivileged children in the El Paso area. For information,

Education Information Fair
Fort Bliss will host its annual Education Information Fair for all military
families from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 1, at the Centennial NCO Club, at
Biggs Army Airfield. El Paso area school superintendents, principals,
counselors and PTA presidents will be in attendance to welcome new families,
pass out information and answer questions.
Representatives from various school departments such as pupil services,
transportation, special education, gifted and talented, nursing, athletics,
health and food services will also be on hand to answer questions. Representatives
from El Paso, Ysleta, Socorro, Anthony, Clint and Canutillo School Districts
will also be present. Thirty five parochial, private, homeschool, and
charter schools will be represented, as well as the Region 19 Headstart,
Prevent Blindness, Advocacy Inc. and Fort Bliss Child Care programs.
Additionally, a representative from Childcare Management Services will
be available to assist families with financial concerns regarding daycare.
This event will provide an excellent opportunity to families with school
age children to meet and gather information from various schools and
to familiarize themselves with all the school programs available in

Kelly Park transition
Under the Residential Housing Initiative, Kelly Park on Marshall Rd.
is now operated and maintained by GMH Military Housing. The facility
remains open for general use, including mini golf. Please call 568-1987. Organizational

Dive In
Join MWR July 30 for a wet and wild time at the Community Pool’s
first ever Dive In. Join us for friends, family, and food as we play great
movies at the pool. Parents and kids can arrive at the starlit
cinema at 7 p.m. or patrons can come early in the day and stay until
night. Movie starts at 8:30 p.m. Cost is only $1 and snacks will
be provided for an extra cost. Watching a movie will never be
the same. Fort Bliss Community Pool Dive In- it’s like a

Army Soldier Show
The 2005 U.S. Army Soldier Show comes to Fort Bliss Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
and Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Soldier Hall, Bldg. 2, to perform “Operation
America Cares,” a 90-minute song and dance production that expresses
the importance of giving deployed Soldiers a touch of home. The
show will focus on how Soldiers deal with the stresses of war and long
deployments. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis; no tickets

Wine and dinner
The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club cordially invites you to sample
exquisite wine and eat a delectable four course meal at the Fort Bliss
Officers’ Club Wine and Dinner Pairing, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Whether
you are gathering with close friends or having an intimate date with
that special someone, our wine and dinner pairing will have your taste
buds dancing with delight. Each meal will be accompanied by a complimentary
pairing of wine to bring out the taste of the food presented. Tickets

Jazz fest
We’re keeping the spirit of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong
alive with live jazz music and authentic New Orleans Cuisine at the
Officers’ Club on the famous jazz player’s birthday Aug.
4 at 4:30 p.m. The event will include a rich sampling of films
and clips featuring Louis Armstrong and his contemporaries, a walk-through
sampling of food prepared by New Orleans native and Officers’
Club head chef, AB Bradford, wine tasting and a special tribute to Satchmo
himself provided by some very special guests. It’s a celebration
of food, music, and fun and it’s only happening at the Fort Bliss
Officers’ Club.
YS teen council
Fort Bliss Youth Services is establishing a new teen council. This
group will be actively involved with the planning and the development
of activities offered at Fort Bliss Youth Services, to include organizing
teen programs such as fieldtrips, dances, community outreach, and youth
sponsorship. Youth between 13 and 18 years of age who want to make a
difference within their community are needed! For further information,

Bowling league
Aug. 23, the Fort Bliss Bowling Center will host an organizational meeting
for the Center Men’s Handicap Bowling League. At present, 20 teams
are interested; however there is room for 32 teams. Aug. 19, the
Fort Bliss Bowling Center will host an organizational meeting for the
Friday Seniors Handicap Bowling. Participants must be 50 years or older.
At present, 18 teams are interested; however there is room for 24 teams.

AAU Bench Press Competition
Fort Bliss MWR Sports will host an Amateur Athletic Union Bench Press
Competition Sept. 24 at Stout Gym. This is a military Bench Press National
Championship and is open to all branches of the service. Weigh-ins begin
at 8 a.m.; competition at 10 a.m. Cost for participating for males and
females is $30, which includes the entry fee, a T-shirt and competition
medial for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finished. AAU Powerlifting rules apply
and may be accessed at 1www.aausports.org. All entries must be postmarked
no later than Sept. 3, and should be sent certified mail with return
receipt. The event is sponsored by the Fort Bliss Buffalo Soldiers Powerlifting

Motorcycle show
As part of the Rock the Fort Music Fest Saturday, MWR will host a motorcycle
show for Soldiers and Fort Bliss community members who wish to show

Distinquished award
Nominations for the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian
Humanitarian Award must by submitted no later than than July 28. Nominations
for this award are for contributions made between Jan. 1 to Dec. 31,
2004. This award is to an individual or organization who has demonstrated
exceptional patriotism and humanitarian concern for members of the United
States Armed Forces or families. An endorsement by a Major Army command

German American Night Run
The 12th Annual First Light Federal Credit Union German-American Oktoberfest
Night Run is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Kelly Park. The event is open
to all community members. Participants may sign up for either the 8K
Run (5 miles) or the 5K Fun Walk (3.1 miles). Entry fees are $15 in
advance and $20 the day of race. Military unit teams may run in the
military competition, with the top five individual finishing times going
toward their team’s overall time. Teams may include up to ten
individuals, and the entry fee is $120 per military unit team. First
through third place teams receive cash awards to their unit funds. Information
sheets with registration forms are available at Stout Fitness Center,
Fort Bliss ITR, most El Paso sport stores, and YMCA and YWCA locations.

Early registrants may mail their registration form and check made payable

begin at 4 p.m. and will include Oktoberfest music and a variety of
entertainment, along with the sale of German Bratwurst and pastries
and other refreshments. Proceeds from the race will benefit MWR and
the German Air Force charity organizations “Helping Hands”
and “Aid for the Needy,” which have been reaching out to
the needy on both sides of the Texas/Mexico border for more than 20

Veterinary services
The Vet Clinic offers Walk-In Wellness clinics (vaccines, microchips,
deworming, heartworm and feline leukemia tests) every Tuesday, Wednes-day,
and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. If your pet
needs to be seen for something other than vaccines, we offer sick call
appointments every Tuesday and Thursday, call 569-2266 to schedule an
appointment. Lastly, our lobby hours for clearing, pet registration
and for sale of Heartguard medications and flea and tick preventatives
are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.; and
Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.
School registration
Kindergarten and preschool registration is now being accepted for the
05/06 school year. Kindergarten - Monday through Friday, noon until
3 p.m. at the Main CDC, Preschool - Monday, Wednes-day, and Friday from
8:30 to 11 a.m. at Main CDC, Preschool Monday through Friday 8:30 to
11 a.m. at Logan CDC. Rates are based on total family income and parent’s

Bowling birthday packages
The Fort Bliss Bowling Center offers four different birthday packages,
all at unbeatably low prices. There is a minimum of six children required
for a party and each package includes party hats and balloons. The get-together
is set up by the Fort Bliss Bowling Center Staff to the rear of the
lanes. Our packages are as follows:
Package #1 is $6 per child and includes a hot dog with chips and a fountain
drink, one free game of bowling and one free shoe rental.
Package #2 is $6.50 per child and includes one slice of pepperoni or
sausage pizza. A 12 oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and
one free shoe rental.
Package #3 is $6.50 per child and includes one slice of cheese pizza,
a 12 oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and one free shoe
rental.
Package #4 is $6.50 per child and includes one regular burger, a 12
oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and one free shoe rental.
Birthday parties or other special events are even available for booking
on Saturdays. The center also has automatic bumpers for lots of family

CDS special openings
The Child Development Center now offers special hours of operation every
Saturday at its main location in Bldg. 1730 on Haan Road. Hours are
1 p.m. to midnight. Cost for payday weekend care is $3.50 per hour first
child and $3 per hour for each additional child for CAT 2 and up, $2.50
per hour and $2 per hour for each additional child in CAT 1, ages 2
months to 12 years, are eligible for the care. For a special opening,
a minimum reservation of 20 children is required. When there are not
enough reservations to warrant opening, alternative care will be offered.

ITR cabin rentals
Stop by the ITR office for your Ruidoso getaway. ITR now has a listing
of cabins and lodges that offer 10% discount for military. For information,

AER
Fort Bliss AER office is running a pilot program. The Fort Bliss AER
Office is going to do away with the appointment schedule and run a test
program for 120 days on a walk in basis. This program is an effort to
streamline the AER Loan process and to make AER more user friendly and
decrease the amount of time the Soldier is away from the unit. Soldiers
wanting AER assistance can walk in and pick up a loan application or
use forms flow and when they have completed the loan application return
it to the AER office with all the required documentation and signatures.
This program will run similar to the commanders referral program in
which the loan application is dropped of by 1 p.m. the loan is ready
for pick up the same business day, after 1 p.m. the loan is ready the
following business day. Emergency Leaves still have priority and will
always be processed fist. During the last couple of months the AER work
load has increased nearly 60 percent we feel this is partially due to
the changes made over the last year to better serve the soldier. If
this program is successful as we feel it will be, Fort Bliss AER office
will lead the way in ensuring our soldiers emergency’s are expedited.
Lock and Leave Storage
Lock and Leave Storage invites all military personnel, their dependents,
retirees and other individuals with military ID cards to store their
personal goods with us. Moving frequently with PSCs and TDYs, a person
can accumulate a lot of stuff. Lock & Leave, your official on-post
storage center, offers specials such as Welcome, Buddy and Frequent

Sunday brunches
The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club offers a Champagne Sunday Brunch
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday except holiday weekends. The cost
is $9.95 for members and $11.95 for nonmembers, $6.00 for children ages
7 to 11 and free for children 6 and under. Reservations are recommended,
please call 568-7013.
PCS/ETS
PCSing to a new installation? The Army Community Service relocation
programs will provide you with automated welcome packets on any DoD
military installation worldwide while you wait. Assigned to an isolated
location far from an installation? Not a problem, Internet access will
provide localized information. How do you find that isolated location
within CONUS? Computerized route-maps will take you there. Soldiers
clearing the installation are advised that strip maps, showing the location
of all agencies that must be cleared, are available at ACS relocation
desk at Bldg. 2494, which is also a required stop in the clearing process.
Avoid becoming “geographically challenged” by clearing us

Fort Bliss MWR is available to make presentation briefs to Soldier units,
active, and reserve on MWR’s installation role, operating budget,

Texas Veteran’s Home
The Ambrioso Guillen Texas Veterans Home will open its doors with a
grand opening ceremony on Tuesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. The ceremony

Roswell collection
Insights, El Paso Science Museum will host a special out of this world
exhibit. The Roswell Collection will be on display beginning Saturday
July 16. This exhibit, a replica of the original UFO Museum and Research
Center in Roswell, N.M., will take the visitor through the pages of
history, pose questions you may not want to ask, and give answers you
may not want to hear. Most importantly, you may decide whether this
is Science Fiction or Science Fact. Accompanying this unique collection
will be an exhibit of known aliens; our own space program. We will follow
NASA programs and join the ranks of aliens and venture out into space.
Space once called the final frontier, is now available in fact and fantasy.

Mission Trail Harvest Market
Local farmers, bakers and craftspeople will display their wares at an
open-air farmers market 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, July 30-Oct. 29,
at the Tigua parking lots on Zaragosa and Socorro Road (across from

The market is a joint project of the cities of Socorro and El Paso,
the Texas Cooperative Extension Service and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo
Indian Tribe, and will feature fresh products such as peppers, corn,
apricots, tomatoes, grapes, pomegranates, pistachios, honey, pecans,
figs, squash, bread and baked goods. Arts and crafts vendors and live
entertainment will also be offered.
Farmer’s Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing
The market’s fourth season runs 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, with
more than 25 quality vendors, growers and artisans. The CoffeeStream
will serve breakfast 7:30 to 11 a.m. on the patio, including pastries,

Ardovino’s Desert Crossing is at One Ardovino Drive in Sunland

El Paso Chorale auditions
The El Paso Chorale Chamber Choir has one opening for a paid position
in the tenor section. Performances to include two productions with El
Paso Opera, The Gift of Christmas Concerts at the Union Depot, a Valentine’s
concert, a spring concert and a performance with the El Paso Symphony
in April. Auditions run through the first week in July; practices begin

Ruidoso Art Festival
The 34th annual event is July 29-31, at the Ruidoso Convention Center
on Highway 48. Sponsored by the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce,
the juried show has more than 100 artists displaying various forms of

The festival has been named by the Harris Poll as one of the top art
shows in the U.S. and No. 1 in Southern New Mexico. Works include painting,

the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce will be held.
Tennis Club and Fitness Zone
The Fort Bliss Tennis Club and Fitness Zone offers a five-court tennis
club, fitness area with a 20-piece circuit training room, and two practice
courts. The workout area features hydraulic weight machines, cardio
equipment and a “Romper Area” for small children to play
under their parent’s supervision while working out. The facility
will have a tiered monthly payment rate ranging from $20 to $35. Those

Mesilla Mercado
Local farmers and merchants sell a variety of merchandise at Old Mesilla
Plaza, noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. The mercado includes
local pottery, woodwork, produce, jewelry, photography and a variety

Swim lessons
The following are classes being offered at Replica Pool Aug. 8 through
12. Stroke improvement from noon to 2 p.m. cost $30. You must have past
swimming level 3 or higher.
Lifeguard readiness from 2 to 5 p.m. class, cost $40. You must have
past swimming level 3 or higher and be 10 years old or older. Topics
include swimming and water drills, rescues in/out of water, basic first
aid, using a backboard, water entries to include lifeguard stands.

New magazine
War Stories Journal, a new e-publication produced by S. Daniel Smith,
requests stories from current and former members of the Armed Forces.
The quarterly’s launch will mark the first journal that tells
history from the first-person viewpoint of those who were there. First
person narratives and photos will depict wartime and peacetime activities.
Fiction writing will also be showcased, according to the publisher.
The journal is emailed to recipients four times a year and costs $5
for a year’s subscription. Writers can find submission guidelines
on the quarterly’s Web site at http://sdansmith.tripod.com, along
with ordering information.
Special promotions include reduced pricing for ordering an entire year’s
worth of magazines. Recruiters are also able to order a discount CD

School vacancies
New Mexico Military Institute, a four-year preparatory high school,
two-year junior college, and a military boarding school, announces vacancies
for full-time, 10 to 10.5-month positions for Army Junior Reserve Officer
training instructors. As a minimum, candidates must be retired noncommissioned
officers or warrant officers certified by the U.S. Army Cadet Command
to instruct in the JROTC program. Army instructors provide direct support
to the NMMI Commandant of Cadets for activities such as; troop military
advisor, squad leader school, leadership camp, drill and ceremony training,
physical readiness training and intramurals. Duties include classroom
instruction (leadership and citizenship) and sponsor/ coach in one or
more of the following areas: Color Guard, Rifle Team, Drill Team, and
Recon Platoon.

Foreign film series returns
The El Paso Museum of Art’s Foreign Films 2004 series kicks off
this month. Twenty-one contemporary films from around the world will

Warrant officer program
There has never been a better time to submit packets for the U. S. Army

the number of warrant officer applications it’s accepting in all

Host families wanted
Host families come from all backgrounds, all income levels. All
just want a foreign student to have the opportunity to see the
USA and to live with a local family. Host families want a foreign student
to experience high school in the USA. All student come to
the USA with their own spending money and medical insurance. They
all speak English and want the opportunity to experience the Southwest.
The El Paso-Las Cruces area is open to many students. Students
are available from Germany, Italy, China, South America and many other
countries. They all want to commence school in August therefore, we
need families immediately. Become one of the SHARE family.
SHARE places the student, provides monthly visits, keeps in contact
with the schools, has special events for both the students and host
families and is on call 24 hours a day/seven days a week. Contact

Stray pet policy
The Vet Clinic wants to remind everyone about the stray policy on Fort
Bliss. Per USAG Regulation 190-4, if a stray is picked up by animal
control, it will be held at the Impound Facility at the Vet Clinic for
three working days. Strays will be checked for microchips and/or tags
when caught. If the owner/sponsor does not appear to claim the animal
within three days, it will be either put up for adoption or euthanized.
Strays that are seriously injured or ill and appear to be suffering
may be euthanized prior to the three days if an owner cannot be located
or contacted.
Green to Gold
The United States Army Cadet Command Green to Gold scholarship program
has opened another opportunity for enlisted Soldiers who are considering
ending their term of service. The Green to Gold program gives Soldiers
the opportunity to remain on active duty and become a leader as an Officer.
This opportunity provides scholarship funding for up to four years depending
on degree requirements. The scholarship will provide up $23,000 per
year for tuition and fees, an annual $900 book allowance and a monthly
stipend which starts at $250 and ramps up to $400. Soldiers will
be discharged in accordance with AR 635-200, Chapter 16. Soldiers will
be able to use the Montgomery GI Bill and College fund benefits in addition
to the scholarship. The application window is from June 1 through Oct.
1. A selection board will convene in November with announcements made
approximately Nov. 18. Soldiers selected for the program will be discharged
30 days before the start of classes at their college or university.
