El Paso Diabetes Association


Join the El Paso Diabetes Association for a cooking class and start eating healthy.

Enjoy a cooking presentation by a professional chef. Sample each dish prepared and take home recipes with detailed preparation directions. This month’s featured chef is Andre Neria. The event will take place Aug. 11, at 1440 Miracle Way, 1st floor, admission is $10, to pre-register call 532-6280.

62nd Army Band

The 62nd Army Band is planning a concert for the month of October and would like to invite all active duty military, family members, or DA civilians that play a musical instrument to join us. Information exchange

Information Exchange, an hour-long monthly meeting designed to keep Soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians informed about upcoming post events, activities and programs, is held the last Monday of every month at 9 a.m. at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Ballroom. The agenda features speakers from various organizations, including Tricare, the NCO Wives Club, AAFES, ASYMCA, MWR, and more. The next gathering will be held Aug. 25. Vacation Bible School

Parents of children from pre-school through sixth grade are invited to register their children now for vacation Bible school to be held Aug. 1 through 5 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The theme of the session is “Going on a Prayer Safari.” Classes will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon. The Bible school will be conducted at Bauman Hall in the church located at 1000 Montana. Big Band dance


A Big Band dance with Mike Caranda and his 12 peice Swing orchestra featuring the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and music of the Big Band era will be held Aug. 14 at the Alamo Ballroom, 820 Raynor from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is $9 per person. For information, call 584-8623.

Special Forces

Noon lecture series

Gen. Joshua Chamberlain who fought during the civil war will be the topic of the Museum Noon Lecture Series for the month of Aug. The 30 to 40 minute PowerPoint slide lecture will be held on Wednesday Aug. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Fort Bliss Museum Auditorium.

The Museum Noon Lecture Series, presented by retired Maj. Gen. Bill Riley, are held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from noon to 1 p.m.

Red Cross training

The American Red Cross is offering a Babysitter’s Training Course for youth ages 11 to 16. The class will be held on Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Red Cross Office, Bldg 45 Slater road. Cost for the class is $25. The American Red Cross Volunteer orientations are held every Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Red Cross office. We are looking for leadership volunteers as well as volunteers in health and safety, disaster and clerical support. To register please call 568-4898.

New Sick Call procedures


In an effort to improve sick call procedures at the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System, the changes below are made: Walk in sick call is changing to sick call by appointment; patients can call the Telephone linked Care at 569-6158, listen to the menu options and choose the option to speak to a registered nurse. The TLC line will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The TLC line will rollover to the usual 800 number after 4 p.m.; calls will be triaged by a RN and the patient will receive advice for self care, instructions to go to the emergency department or to call 911, and/or receive a same day sick call appointment.

Texas Salsa Festival

The El Paso Empowerment Zone will have a Salsa Dance Competition at the first Texas Salsa Festival Sept. 4. The contest will consist of a youth, amateur, and professional salsa dance competition judged by the El Paso Ballroom Dance Academy, New Horizon Dance Academy, Lupe Duran, Shundo, and World Salsa & Mambo Champions Carolina and Felipe Telona, who will also perform in a dance showcase.

The youth competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday for ages 17 and younger. The amateur competition for dancers ages 18 and above will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the professional competition for ages 18 and above starting at 8:30 p.m. Prizes for competition winners include trophies for first, second, and third place and also a month-long scholarship to one of the area dance schools in partnership with the Texas Salsa Festival. Deadline for application submittal is Aug. 26.

Open call for youth dance team

The El Paso Empowerment Zone will host the Texas Salsa Festival Sept. 4. EPEZ is looking for local youth dance teams to perform to Latin Jazz and Salsa music at the festival. Participants will perform at the Youth Stage, along with the Fanta Girls and Regaton band Big Family.

Fiest de las Flores

The League of United Latin American Citizens will host its annual Fiesta de las Flores Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2 through 5, at the El Paso County Coliseum. Sept. 5 is Military Appreciation Day, free admission for all active military, family members, National Guard, Reserve and retired military. Fiesta de las Flores include daily entertainment, a carnival, food, game booths and much more. Notre Dame student send off


The Notre Dame Club of El Paso will host its annual send-off Aug. 7 at 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 5216 White Oak. All freshmen and current students, families, friends, and alumni are encouraged to attend. Travel advisory

There is a travel advisory at the El Paso International Airport, and airlines are recommending that all passengers arrive one and half-hours before departure. The early arrival time is necessary in order to facilitate and expedite the screening process handled by the Transportation Security Administration. Excalibur Steppers


The Excalibur Steppers are looking for new members. Ages 5 to 15 are invited to come out and join our team. Practices are held Monday through Friday. The Tuesday and Thursday practices are held at Stout Gym from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday practice is done at my home in Northeast El Paso starting at 7 p.m. To become an Excalibur Stepper students must maintain a “C” average in school. CERT training schedule

The El Paso Police Department is offering free Community Emergency Response Training through December at the Police Academy 2300 Scenic Drive. The 20 hour courses will be held Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The dates are Aug. 16 through 18, 20, Sept. 13 through 15, 17, Oct. 11 through 13, 15, Nov. 15 through 17, 19, and Dec. 6 through 8, 10. Mailbox theft tips


The El Paso Police Department and the United States Postal Service would like to warn the community about mailbox thefts and to take precautions when sending or receiving mail. If you believe that you have been the victim of mail theft, here are a few steps to follow: report the incident to the Police Department at 832-4400. Report the incident to your local post office and postal inspector. Contract your bank and credit card holders. Check your bank and credit card statements for unexplained transactions. If anyone has information on possible subjects involved in mailbox theft they are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 566-8477 and remain anonymous.

Keep El Paso Beautiful

Keep El Paso Beautiful now has fully stocked tool sheds just waiting to be used to keep El Paso beautiful. All necessary items (push brooms, shovels, rakes, gas weed eaters, gloves, and trash bags) for beautification and/or clean-up projects are available to any person or group at no charge to the public. Toys for Tots golf tourney


The 4th annual Toys for Tots Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 25 at the Lone Star Golf Club. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. It is a four person scramble: $260 per team or $65 per person plus a new unwrapped toy (worth $5 or more). Fee includes green fee, cart, lunch, and goodie bags. Prizes will be awarded for longest, straightest drive and specialty holes. All proceeds go towards buying toys for underprivileged children in the El Paso area. For information, contact Gunnery Sgt. Desert Eagle Productions


Desert Eagle Productions is having open auditions for a Street Hip Hop Dance Crew. One of the company’s many goals is to keep the culture of hip hop alive in a positive light for the youth of El Paso. This crew will do performances throughout El Paso to encourage youth to utilize this street art in a positive manner while gaining feedback that will help build confidence in this art form. Auditions will take place at 5 p.m., with registration starting at 4 p.m., July 30, at 9530 Viscount Space 1C. This is located inside the Secure Living Self Defense Space. Biggs Vacation Bible School


Parents sign your children up for Vacation Bible School. VBC will be held at Biggs Airfield Chapel Aug. 1 through 5; from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Vans will pick up children from the Biggs Housing area between 5:30 to 6 p.m., and drop them off between 7:30 to 8 p.m. The pick up and drop off is for children whose parents have registered and signed a JAG release form. Responsible ownership day


The Onate Trail Dog Fanciers Association will join with the American Kennel Club and other AKC affiliated clubs nationwide Sept. 17 to celebrate Responsible Dog Ownership Day. The club and their dogs will be at Carmike Cinemas to discuss and promote how to provide good care for your pets and what a pet requires. Information on the different types of dog breeds will be available and the public is invited to Meet the Breed; meeting the club’s dogs up close to help determine what breed might be a good pet for their family. Also available will be information and handouts about the various dog activities and sports in El Paso and the area. Training information will also be available. Hope Chapel services move


Contemporary Christian Service’s held at Hope Chapel will now be held at Chapel 2 starting Aug. 7. San Antonio Lighthouse

Nov. 19 San Antonio Lighthouse and the San Antonio Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter presents Heirloom Appraisal Day. Bring your prized heirloom to the Airport Convention Center, 8505 Broadway in San Antonio and get a verbal appraisal for $10. Event is similar to the “Antique Road Show” shown on PBS. Participants can purchase tickets by phone prior to event or at the door Nov. 19. Appraisers from all around Texas will be on hand to verbally appraise items like fine china and antique paintings. American Red Cross

Lawn chair and a movie


In September and October the Lawn Chair and a Movie event will take place at old Fort Bliss. There will also be a Farmer’s Harvest Market. Both offers opportunities for family readiness groups to sell snacks/crafts. Call Mrs. Disinger at 568-3137 for more information. Septem-ber movies will feature John Wayne. Tofu cooking class

The public is invited to attend a tofu cooking class. We will be preparing the following delectable foods: tofu mayonnaise and spinach (or kale) dip, tofu burgers, tofu balls a sweet and sour sensation, brown rice in veggie broth, faux Chinese chicken salad, curried tofu over perfect brown rice, maple orange cake with tofu icing. Beatles return to El Paso

Team Bliss soccer

Team Bliss Varsity Soccer program is looking for players who are interested in playing league play and possibly tournaments. BOSS San Diego getaway

Women’s Equality Day

Fort Bliss will conduct a Women’s Equality Day Observance Aug. 25 between 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Hall. This ceremony is in honor of the contributions women have made to our nation. Dive In

Join MWR July 30 for a wet and wild time at the Community Pool’s first ever Dive In. Join us for friends, family, and food as we play great movies at the pool. Parents and children can arrive at the starlit cinema at 7 p.m. or patrons can come early in the day and stay until night. Movie starts at 8:30 p.m. Cost is only $1 and snacks will be provided for an extra cost. Watching a movie will never be the same. Jazz fest


We’re keeping the spirit of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong alive with live jazz music and authentic New Orleans Cuisine at the Officers’ Club on the famous jazz player’s birthday Aug. 4 at 4:30 p.m. The event will include a rich sampling of films and clips featuring Louis Armstrong and his contemporaries, a walk-thru sampling of food prepared by New Orleans native and Officers’ Club head chef, AB Bradford, wine tasting from Del Norte Fine Wines, and a special tribute to Satchmo himself provided by some very special guests. It’s a celebration of food, music, and fun and it’s only happening at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club.

Payday golf scramble

As part of post payday activities, the commanding general would like to invite all Fort Bliss Soldiers to participate in a nine-hole golf scramble Aug. 5 at noon. Soldiers E-6 and below pay $3 and E-7 and above pay $5. There is no charge for club members E-6 and below, E-7 and above as members pay $1. Carts are $4 per player. Regular price is $8 per player. Club rental is $2.50 per set. A limited number of spaces are available. Prizes will be awarded to the first place team and closest to the pin. Interested individuals must sign up no later than 4 p.m. Aug. 4. The commanding general endorses the activities to promote team building and camaraderie among Soldiers and to serve as a pleasant departure from the regular workday. For information, call 562-1273.

Taco Tuesday

The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center on Biggs Airfield introduces its “all-you-can-eat” Taco Tuesday Aug. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will feature an assortment of hard-shell and soft-shell beef and chicken tacos, rice, beans, chips and salsa, variety of desserts, and a beverage. Army Soldier Show


The 2005 U.S. Army Soldier Show comes to Fort Bliss Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Soldier Hall, Bldg. 2, to perform “Operation America Cares,” a 90-minute song and dance production that expresses the importance of giving deployed Soldiers a touch of home. The show will focus on how Soldiers deal with the stresses of war and long deployments. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis; no tickets are issued. The show is free. Fire and ice weekend: July 30 and 31, $102. Cost includes one night’s stay in Grants, New Mexico, admission to Bandera National Monument, admission to the New Mexico Mining Museum.

Wet-n-Wild: Aug. 6, $16.

Carlsbad Caverns: Aug. 13, $25. Cost includes admission to Carlsbad Caverns, admission to Carlsbad Caverns Kings Palace tour.

Dripping Springs and War Eagles Air Museum: Aug. 27, $16. Cost includes admission to Dripping Springs and La Cueva, admission to the War Eagles Air Museum.

Wine and dinner

The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club cordially invites you to sample exquisite wine and eat a delectable four-course meal at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Wine and Dinner Pairing, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Whether you are gathering with close friends or having an intimate date with that special someone, our wine and dinner pairing will have your taste buds dancing with delight. Each meal will be accompanied by a complimentary pairing of wine to bring out the taste of the food presented. CYS fee payment

The Army subsidizes child care fees with appropriated funds so that child care is available, affordable and of high quality. Soldiers only pay a percentage of the total cost to provide care. Army policy states that all child care fees will be paid in advance. Soldiers have a responsibility to ensure child care fees are paid in a timely manner. Fees for CDS and SAS regularly scheduled full time or part day programs are due on the first of the month. For your convenience, parents may choose to pay the full fee on the first of the month or to pay half on the first and the other half on the 15th of the month. Fees not paid within three days after the 1st and/or 15th will incur a late fee. Once the fees are 15 days past due, the Soldier’s commander will be notified. At 20 days past due, CYS must terminate services. At 30 days past due, CYS will contact DMWR Financial Management Division to initiate DD 139 (Pay Adjustment Authorization) action and the delinquent sum will be deducted from the Soldier’s paycheck. Any time fees are owed in any program, the family cannot enroll the child in another CYS program. For information, call 568-4374.

NFL football Sundays

Beginning Sept. 11, the Down Under Sports Bar at the Officer’s Club and the Metro Station at the Centennial will offer NFL Sunday Ticket every Sunday. Both clubs will open at 10 or 11 a.m. (depending on start time of game) and will offer multiple broadcasted games daily. Free snacks will be available and patrons may choose their favorite bottle, draft beer or both import and domestic. Kelly Park transition


Under the Residential Housing Initiative, Kelly Park on Marshall Road is now operated and maintained by GMH Military Housing. The facility remains open for general use, including mini golf. Call 568-1987 for information. Organiza-tional days and MWR equipment rental (jumping balloons, dunk tank, big grills, event tents, etc.) will now be located at Biggs Park. Call 568-8087 for more information or reservations.

CDS special openings

Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services is available for childcare during your unit special events for a minimum of 20 reservations. Payment must be made in advance. Interested individuals must contact Elizabeth Bernal at Central Enrollment and Registration, 569-5040. 

Family care plan policies

Family care plans are required for all single and dual military parents to ensure the safety and well being of your child. Two copies of this plan will be maintained, one at central enrollment and one copy in the child’s file in the primary child care setting. Parents will provide updated information to CER annually or more frequently if necessary to update information. This information allows us to ensure the care of your child in your absence. Parents are given 30 days from the date of registration to provide CER with a copy of completed FCP, DA 5305-R. If DA 5305-R is not received within those 30 days, services will be terminated until such time as the DA 5305-R is provided. Parenting classes

Parenting is a challenge, and most parents share the same goal, to raise a confident, respectful, self-reliant, responsible, cooperative child according to the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Children under Six. Free parenting classes are available at the Army Community Service Center, Bldg. 2494 on Ricker Road. The classes teach parents how to understand behavior, building your child’s self-esteem, listening and  talking to them, helping them learn to cooperate, disciplining and their social and emotional development. Parenting styles will also be discussed. The class is based on the book The Systematic Training for Effective Parenting by Don Dinkmeyer Sr., Gary D. Mckay, James S. Dinkmeyer, Don Dinkmeyer, Jr. Joyce L. Mckay, which is used by more than half a million parents.

Oscar de la Hoya boxing series

The third-card fight in Oscar De La Hoya’s Ball Park Boxing Series will be held Aug. 5 at Cohen Stadium at 8 p.m. The final card in this series will feature local fighters, a female fighter and potentially a highly-touted fighter presented by Don King. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $15 for box seats and $25 for ringside. Free general admission tickets are also available at Good Times stores with the purchase of a De La Hoya souvenir drink cup.

German American Night Run

The 12th Annual First Light Federal Credit Union German-American Oktoberfest Night Run is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Kelly Park. The event is open to all community members. Participants may sign up for either the 8K Run (5 miles) or the 5K Fun Walk (3.1 miles). Entry fees are $15 in advance and $20 the day of race. Military unit teams may run in the military competition, with the top five individual finishing times going toward their team’s overall time. Teams may include up to ten individuals, and the entry fee is $120 per military unit team. First through third place teams receive cash awards to their unit funds. Information sheets with registration forms are available at Stout Fitness Center, Fort Bliss ITR, most El Paso sport stores, and YMCA and YWCA locations. EP Museum of Art

The El Paso Museum of Art will showcase Oscar-nominated short films in conjunction with the Binational Independent Film Festival.
