Mandatory motorcycle certification training
Fort Bliss has experienced two fatal motorcycle accidents this fiscal
year. The accident investigations revealed both riders were experienced
NCOs who recently transitioned to higher class motorcycles. Following
the May accident, Maj. Gen. Vane directed implementation of motorcycle
certification training for all motorcycle riders on post. The current
commanding general directed continuation of this initiative. The training
is mandatory for all military personnel (assigned or attached to Fort
Bliss) who operate motorcycles.
Based on the commanding general’s guidance from the last readiness
review, motorcycle registration for Fort Bliss Soldiers is mandatory.
All Soldiers, NCOs, officers and civilians who operate a motorcycle
must attend the motorcycle certification course. Contact James Hill,

New sick call procedures at VA Clinic
The El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System have made the following
changes: Walk-in sick call is now sick call by appointment; patients
call the telephone linked care at 569-6158, listen to the menu options,
and choose the option to speak to a registered nurse. The TLC phone
line is available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The patient will receive
advice for self-care, instructions to go to the emergency department,
or call 911, and, if needed, receive a same day sick call appointment.
Operation Santa Claus
Operation Santa Claus is holding an open house the week of Aug 15.
Stop by the OpSanta Warehouse inside building 1123. Help kick off the
48th season helping the children of El Paso and Fort Bliss. The open

62nd Army Band concert
The 62nd Army Band is planning a concert for the month of October and

Recycling Center needs mascot

Excalibur Steppers
The Excalibur Steppers are looking for new members. Ages five to fifteen
are invited to come out and join. Practices are Monday through Friday.
The Tuesday and Thursday practices are at Stout Gym from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday practices are held at a private residence
in northeast El Paso at 7:00 p.m. To become an Excalibur Stepper, students

CERT training schedule
The El Paso Police Department is offering free Community Emergency Response
Training through December at the Police Academy, 2300 Scenic Drive.
The courses will be held on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5:30 to
9:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as follows: Aug. 16
through 18, Aug. 20, Sept. 13 through 15, Sept. 17,Oct. 11 through 13,
Oct. 15, Nov. 15 through 17, Nov. 19, and Dec. 6 through 8 and Dec.

Toys for Tots
The 4th annual Toys for Tots Golf Tournament will be Aug. 25 at the
Lone Star Golf Club. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with a 9:00 a.m.
shotgun start. It is a four-person scramble: $260.00 per team or $65.00
per person, plus a new unwrapped toy (worth at least $5.00). Fee includes
green fee, cart, lunch, and goodie bags. Prizes will be awarded for
the longest drive, the straightest drive and specialty holes. All proceeds
go towards buying toys for underprivileged children in the El Paso area.

El Paso Airport travel advisory
Summer travel has begun and airlines are recommending passengers get
to the airport an hour and a half before departure. The early arrival
time expedites the screening process conducted by the Transportation
Security Administration. Early morning and early afternoon are peak

Responsible Dog Ownership Day
The Onate Trail Dog Fanciers Association will join with the American
Kennel Club and other AKC affiliated clubs nationwide on September 17
celebrating Responsible Dog Ownership Day. The club and their dogs will
be at Carmike Cinemas to discuss and promote how to provide good pet
care and their requirements. Information on the different types of dog
breeds will be available and the public is invited to “Meet the
Breed”; meeting the club’s dogs up close to find out what
breed might be a good pet for their family. Also available will be information
and handouts about the various dog activities and sports in El Paso
and the area. Training information will also be available. The Canine

Hope Chapel Services move
Contemporary Christian Service’s held at Hope Chapel will now
be at Chapel 2 starting Aug. 7. Hope Chapel offers the following every
Sunday: 9 a.m. Contemporary Christian Chapel service; 9 a.m. child
care for those younger than Pre-K; 9 a.m. Sunday school for Pre-K through
3rd grade; 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for pre-K through adults which is
a separate curriculum from the 9 a.m. Pre-K through 3rd grade class.

Information exchange
“Information Exchange,” an hour-long monthly meeting designed
to keep Soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians informed about
upcoming post events, activities and programs, is held the last Monday
of every month at 9 a.m. at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Ballroom.
The agenda features speakers from Tricare, the NCO Wives Club, AAFES,
ASYMCA, MWR, and more. The next gathering will be held August 29. Meeting

American Red Cross
Volunteer Orientations are held every Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at
the Fort Bliss Red Cross office, Bldg. 45, Slater Road. Volunteers are
needed to assist with clerical support, health and safety training and

Lawn Chair and a Movie
The return of “Lawn Chair and a Movie” and the Farmer’s
Harvest Market at old Fort Bliss in September and in October respectively,
presents opportunities for family readiness groups to sell snacks and

Horse Soldiers” on Sept. 16, “The Green Berets” on

FB Women’s Equality Day
Fort Bliss will conduct a Women’s Equality Day Observance on Aug.
25 between 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Hall. This ceremony is in honor
of the contributions women have made to our nation. This event is free
and open to the Fort Bliss and El Paso communities. This year’s
theme is “Celebrating Women’s Right to Vote.” Anyone

Beatles Show returns
The Abraham Chavez Theatre is proud to play host to “1964”
a tribute to the Beatles on Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. “1964” has
toured throughout the world performing at major concert venues, fairs,
festivals, colleges, corporate events, and conventions. Tickets for

Museum Noon Lecture Series
Gen. Joshua Chamberlain, who fought during the civil war, will be the
topic of the Museum Noon Lecture Series for August. The presentation
lasts for approximately 40 minutes. The PowerPoint slide lecture will
be Wednesday, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Fort Bliss Museum Auditorium.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Chamberlain, who had no experience
as a Soldier, felt a strong urge to join the Army and fight to save
the union. He fought in 24 battles during the war, including Antietam
and Gettysburg. He is best known for his historic stand against Confederate
forces at Little Round Top.
Chamberlain is considered to be the model of the perfect “Citizen-Soldier.”
The Museum Noon Lecture Series, presented by retired Maj. Gen. Bill
Riley, are held on the second Wednesday of the month.
Texas Salsa Festival
The El Paso Empowerment Zone will have a Salsa Dance Competition at
the Texas Salsa Festival on Sunday, September 4. The contest will have
a youth, amateur, and professional salsa dance competition categories
judged by the El Paso Ballroom Dance Academy, New Horizon Dance Academy,
Lupe Duran, Shundo, along with the World Salsa and Mambo Champions Carolina
and Felipe Telona, who will perform in a dance showcase.
The youth competition begins at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday for ages 17 and
younger. The amateur competition for dancers ages 18 and above will
begin at 7 p.m., followed by the professional competition for ages 18
and above starting at 8:30 p.m. Prizes for competition winners include
trophies for first, second, and third place. In addition, there a month-long
scholarship to one of the area dance schools in partnership with the
Texas Salsa Festival will be awarded. Deadline for application submittal
is Friday, August 26 and day-of entries will be on a cash basis only.

Fiesta de San Lorenzo
The San Lorenzo Fiesta Committee will host its annual San Lorenzo Fiesta
Friday through Sunday, on the church grounds located at Farm to Market
Road 1110 and Center St., Clint. There will be various matachines groups,
live music, and a disco providing entertainment. Also, there will be
plenty of food and various rides for the kids. Festivities will begin
at 5 p.m. on Friday, noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Mass will
be held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday; 5 p.m. on Saturday; 8 a.m., 10 a.m.,
noon, and 5 p.m. on Sunday. On August 10, the feast day of San Lorenzo,
transportation from the church grounds to San Elizario, Texas, will
be at 1:00 a.m. for the annual pilgrimage back to the church grounds

Team Bliss Soccer Program
Team Bliss Varsity Soccer Program is looking for players who are interested
in league play and possible tournament action. The team practices Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday from 6 to 7 a.m. at the fields just inside the

Open call for youth dance teams
The El Paso Empowerment Zone will host the Texas Salsa Festival on Sunday,
September 4. EPEZ is looking for local youth dance teams to perform
to Latin Jazz and Salsa music at the festival. Participants will perform
on the Youth Stage, along with the Fanta Girls and Regaton band Big

Fiesta de las Flores
The League of United Latin American Citizens will host its annual Fiesta
De Las Flores on Labor Day weekend, September 2 through 5, at the El
Paso County Coliseum. Monday, September 5 is Military Appreciation Day,
FREE admission for all Active Military, family members, National Guard,
Reserve and retired military. Fiesta de las Flores include daily entertainment,
a carnival, food, game booths and much more. The Fort Bliss military
police will provide a K-9 Team demonstration, and an MP Patrol Car with

Nortre Dame student send off
The Notre Dame Club of El Paso will host its annual send-off on Sunday,
Aug. 7 at 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 5216 White Oak. All freshmen and current
students, families, friends, and alumni are invited. Please bring a
salad, vegetable or dessert. We will provide brisket, rolls and drinks.

Ball park boxing series
The third-card fight in Oscar De La Hoya’s Ball Park Boxing Series
will be Aug. 5 at Cohen Stadium, beginning at 8 p.m. The final card
will feature local fighters, a female fighter and potentially a highly-touted
boxer presented by Don King. Tickets are $10 for general admission,
$15 for box seats and $25 for ringside. Free general admission tickets
are also available at Good Times stores with the purchase of a De La
Hoya souvenir drink cup.
El Paso Museum of Art
The El Paso Museum of Art will showcase Oscar-nominated short films
in conjunction with the Binational Independent Film Festival. The films
will be screened in the El Paso Energy Auditorium Thursday Aug. 4, from

Biker party
The American Legion Post 58 and the American Legion Riders are sponsoring
a biker party. Admission is free and there will be a DJ, full bar, dance
floor and a motorcycle rodeo. A bike show and slow drag races are just
two of many events. Trophies will be awarded to event winners. There
will be door prizes and drawings throughout the evening. The American
Legion is located at 4724 Vulcan St. Bike registration begins at 5:30
p.m., and the party begins at 6 p.m. This event is to raise money for
veterans in need and their families within the area. For information

Oktoberfest 2005
The German Air Force Defense Center will host Oktoberfest 2005 Friday,
Sept. 16 through Sunday, Sept.18. The event is scheduled to begin at
7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and will include a beer stein, a Bavarian
dinner and a raffle ticket, featuring the Bavarian Brass Band from Holledau.
On Sunday, the event begins at noon. Doors will open one hour prior
to the start of the event each day. Admission for Friday and Saturday
is $25, and Sunday is $10. Tickets go on sale Aug. 15 and can be purchased

EFMP committee meeting
You are invited to attend the quarterly Exceptional Family Member Program
Committee meeting at 1:30 p.m., Aug.16, at the Army Community Service
Conference Room, Building 2494, Ricker Road, Fort Bliss. Jessica Torrence,
Exceptional Family Member Program Coordinator, will chair this meeting.
It is requested that you come prepared to give a brief (2-3 minutes),
informal presentation about your role in the EFMP. The goal is to share
pertinent information effecting EFMP families.

Laffs 4 Literacy
To raise money for local libraries, People Skills, in partnership with
the El Paso Area Libraries consortium, and the El Paso Sports Commission,
is producing Laffs 4 Literacy on Aug. 20 at the El Paso County Coliseum
at 8 p.m. This event will feature some of the finest comedians. Tickets
are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com, and

Free soccer clinic
There will be a free soccer clinic Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Cohen Stadium.
The clinic features Kwame “The Human Seal” Apea. Kids who
attend the soccer clinic will receive a free ticket to the Diablo’s

Jazz fest
We’re keeping the spirit of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong
alive with live jazz music and authentic New Orleans cuisine at the
Officers’ Club on the famous jazz player’s birthday August
4 at 4:30 p.m.. The event will include a rich sampling of films and
clips featuring Louis Armstrong and his contemporaries, a walk-thru
sampling of food prepared by New Orleans native and Officers’
Club head chef, AB Bradford, wine tasting from Del Norte Fine Wines,
and a special tribute to Satchmo himself provided by some very special
guests. It’s a celebration of food, music, and fun and it’s
only happening at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club. Call 568-7013.
Outdoor Adventures
In August, MWR Outdoor Adventures has the following trips planned: Wet-n-Wild:
August 6, $16.
Carlsbad Caverns: August 13, $25. Cost includes admission to Carlsbad
Caverns, admission to Carlsbad Caverns Kings Palace tour.
Dripping Springs and War Eagles Air Museum: August 27, $16. Cost includes
admission to Dripping Springs and La Cueva, admission to the War Eagles
Air Museum.

Civilian fitness program
Applications for the next civilian physical training program are now
being accepted. Civilians who take part in this program will be allowed
three hours of administrative leave per week for a total of six months
to participate. The program includes a pre and post fitness assessment,
health education classes, activity classes, including weight training
and aerobics, and supervised exercise instruction from 12:30 to 14:30
p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Stop by Stout Physical Fitness Center

packet. The packets are due by Sept. 3, at 4 p.m. Assessments
will be conducted on Monday, Sept. 12, with the class day being Tuesday,

Centennial Taco Tuesday
The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center on Biggs Airfield introduces
its “all-you-can-eat” Taco Tuesdays on August 9 from 6 to
9 p.m. The evening will feature an assortment of hard-shell and
soft beef and chicken tacos, rice, beans, chips and salsa, variety of
desserts, and a beverage. Margaritas and import beer will be available

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage
Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Centennial, Officers’ Club,
and Golden Tee will commemorate Hispanic Heritage with an all-you-care-to-eat
Mexican lunch buffet. Celebrate Hispanic culture with authentic Mexican
food. Choose from an array of tacos, burritos, flautas, enchiladas,
steaming hot refried beans, fresh salsa and crisp tortilla chips. The
buffet at the O Club is $5.25 for members and $6.25 for non-members,

Italian Night
That’s amore! On Aug. 26 and September 23, it’s Italian
Night at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club. From 6 to 9 p.m., the
O Club will feature an all-you-care-to-eat Italian buffet including
a variety of pastas, sauces, meatballs, lasagna, salad bar, assorted
desserts and beverages. Italian Night is open to the Fort Bliss
community. Members pay $9.95, non-members pay $11.95 and children are

Team Bliss Judo Team
All Soldiers interested in being a member of the Team Bliss Judo Team
are invited to start attending practices held in the Combative Training
Room in Bldg. 60. Experience is preferred but not required. Practices
are held: Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 5:30 to 7:30 a.m., and on Tuesday

Friday Seniors Bowling League
On Aug.19 there will be an organization meeting for the Friday Seniors
Handicap Bowling League. To bowl in this league you have to be a senior
50 years young or older. At present we have 18 teams and we have room
for 24 teams. Interested teams or individuals can sign up for this league
at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center or call John Spates at 751-6197 or
the bowling center 568-6272.
Bowling Leagues
Several Fort Bliss Bowling Leagues are signing up new members. Aug.
19: Friday, Seniors Handicap Bowling, participants must be 50 years
or older. August 23: Center Men’s Handicap Bowling League. To

Aug. 31: Golden Age Senior Mixed Bowling League, participants must be
50 years or older, to sign up call 751-1340. Sept. 6: Ladies Tuesday
Evening Bowling League, females of all ages are eligible, four to a

The Bowling Center also hosts the Las Vegas Bowling League on Thursday

Men’s Handicap League
On Aug. 23 there will be an organization meeting. At present, we have
20 teams that showed interest in the only men’s league at Fort
Bliss Bowling Center. We have room to expand to 32 teams. Interested
teams or individuals can sign up for this league at the Fort Bliss Bowling
Center, or call John Spates at 751-6197 or the bowling center 568-6272.
BOSS San Diego getaway
Spend a summer weekend in sunny San Diego, California, Aug. 19 through
22. The BOSS program will sponsor and travel to California’s second
largest city for an awesome summer getaway. For only $95 you will get
transportation to and from San Diego, a Six Flag ticket, hotel accommodations
and for military ID card holders, free admission to Sea World (all others

CYS fee payment
Fees for CDS and SAS regularly scheduled full-time or part-day programs
are due on the first of the month. For your convenience, parents may
choose to pay the full fee on the first of the month or to pay half
on the first and the other half on the 15th of the month. Fees not paid
within three days after the 1st and/or 15th will incur a late fee. Once
the fees are 15 days past due, the Soldier’s commander will be
notified. At 20 days past due, CYS must terminate services. At
30 days past due, CYS will contact DMWR Financial Management Division
to initiate DD 139 (Pay Adjustment Authorization) action and the delinquent
sum will be deducted from the Soldier’s paycheck. Any time fees
are owed in any program, the family can not enroll the child in another
