Chap. (Col.) Ronald Huggler assumed responsibilities as the installation
staff chaplain Aug. 5. His passion to serve Soldiers and mentor chaplains
is the foundation of the Chaplaincy’s reputation. With the transformation
and growth of Fort Bliss, there is no other finer chaplain to hand off
the responsibilities as the installation staff chaplain. There will
be a Garrison Prayer Breakfast Aug. 30 at 6:30 a.m. at the Centennial
Club to mark the occasion.
El Paso Airport travel advisory
Summer travel has begun and airlines are recommending passengers get
to the airport an hour and a half before departure. The early arrival
time expedites the screening process conducted by the Transportation

Walking tours
In conjunction with the Alfresco Fridays summer event, The Junior League
of El Paso’s El Paso Ambassadors Committee will conduct walking
tours of downtown El Paso. The tour begins at 7 p.m. at the Convention
Visitors Bureau booth at the “Alfresco Fridays” event. The
tour focuses on the history of downtown El Paso, as well as revitalization
efforts and the future of downtown El Paso. Tour highlights include
the historic Plaza Theater, the Plaza de los Largatos, and the site
of gunslinger John Wesley Hardin’s demise.
Before and after the tour, participants can enjoy downtown at the Alfresco
Fridays event, hosted by the City Arts and Culture Department. Alfresco
Fridays is held at the El Paso Convention Center Plaza from 5:30 to
7:30 p.m. Following an outdoor concert, people are encouraged to stay
downtown and enjoy a free outdoor movie. A schedule of musical acts

Family movie night
Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church announced that the congregation
will host a family movie night on Saturday, September 10, starting at
6:30 p.m. in the church Fellowship Hall. The free movie will end by
8:30 p.m. and is geared to the family audience. Children must be accompanied

Stirring up the imagination
Donna Collins latest adventure is “A Healthier You”the guide
to living well, co- authored with Deepak Chopra and Billy Blanks. Collins
will be in El Paso, Sept. 4, to do an Imagination Ceremony and Imagine

Collins, whose life is one great adventure, is an internationally recognized
artist, HeartMath coach, feng shui Master for the famed, Mastery Academy
of Chinese Metaphysics and an imagination expert.
Her workshops blend diverse sources of knowledge such as degrees in
Studio Art, Art History and Religion with the teachings of the Dalai
Lama and the Ramtha School of Enlightenment. She has dedicated her life
to helping people live more creative lives utilizing her incredible
imagination.
August Health Care Forum
The August Health Care Forum is 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 25 in the Army Community
Service, building 2450. Topics include TRICARE, Children’s Issues,
and El Paso Critters and Creepy Crawlies. All are invited to attend.
Mandatory motorcycle certification training
Fort Bliss has experienced two fatal motorcycle accidents this fiscal
year. The accident investigations revealed both riders were experienced
NCOs who recently transitioned to higher class motorcycles. Following
the May accident, Maj. Gen. Vane directed implementation of motorcycle
certification training for all motorcycle riders on post. The current
commanding general directed continuation of this initiative. The training
is mandatory for all military personnel (assigned or attached to Fort
Bliss) who operate motorcycles.
Based on the commanding general’s guidance from the last readiness
review, motorcycle registration for Fort Bliss Soldiers is mandatory.
All Soldiers, NCOs, officers and civilians who operate a motorcycle
must attend the motorcycle certification course. Contact James Hill,

New sick call procedures
The El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System have made the following
changes: Walk-in sick call is now sick call by appointment; patients
call the telephone linked care at 569-6158, listen to the menu options,
and choose the option to speak to a registered nurse. The TLC phone
line is available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The patient will receive
advice for self-care, instructions to go to the emergency department,
or call 911, and, if needed, receive a same day sick call appointment.
CDS special event openings
Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services is available for childcare during
your unit special events for a minimum of 20 reservations. Payment must

Responsible Dog Ownership Day
The Onate Trail Dog Fanciers Association will join with the American
Kennel Club and other AKC affiliated clubs nationwide Sept. 17 celebrating
Responsible Dog Ownership Day. The club and their dogs will be at Carmike
Cinemas to discuss and promote how to provide good pet care and their
requirements. Information on the different types of dog breeds will
be available and the public is invited to “Meet the Breed”;
meeting the club’s dogs up close to find out what breed might
be a good pet for their family. Also available will be information and
handouts about the various dog activities and sports in El Paso and
the area. Training information will also be available. The Canine Good

BOSS San Diego getaway
Spend a summer weekend in sunny San Diego, California, Aug. 19 through
22. The BOSS program will sponsor and travel to California’s second
largest city for an awesome summer getaway. For only $95 you will get

and for military ID card holders, free admission to Sea World (all others

CYS fee payment
Fees for CDS and SAS regularly scheduled full-time or part-day programs
are due on the first of the month. For your convenience, parents may
choose to pay the full fee on the first of the month or to pay half
on the first and the other half on the 15th of the month. Fees not paid
within three days after the 1st and/or 15th will incur a late fee. Once
the fees are 15 days past due, the Soldier’s commander will be
notified. At 20 days past due, CYS must terminate services. At
30 days past due, CYS will contact DMWR Financial Management Division
to initiate DD 139 (Pay Adjustment Authorization) action and the delinquent
sum will be deducted from the Soldier’s paycheck. Any time fees
are owed in any program, the family can not enroll the child in another

Operation Santa Claus
Operation Santa Claus is holding an open house the week of Aug. 15.

48th season helping the children of El Paso and Fort Bliss. The open

El Paso Diabetes Association
Join the El Paso Diabetes Association for a cooking class and start
eating healthy. Enjoy a cooking presentation by a professional chef.
Sample each dish prepared and take home recipes with detailed preparation
directions. This month’s featured chef is Andre Neria. The event

Band concert
The 62nd Army Band is planning a concert for the month of October and
invites all active duty military, family members, or DoD civilians that

Info exchange
“Information Exchange,” an hour-long monthly meeting designed
to keep Soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians informed about
upcoming post events, activities and programs, is held the last Monday
of every month at 9 a.m. at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club Ballroom.
The agenda features speakers from Tricare, the NCO Wives Club, AAFES,
ASYMCA, MWR, and more. The next gathering will be held August 29. Meeting

Excalibur Steppers
The Excalibur Steppers are looking for new members. Ages five to fifteen
are invited to come out and join. Practices are Monday through Friday.
The Tuesday and Thursday practices are at Stout Gym from 7:30 to 9:00
p.m. The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday practices are held at a private
residence in northeast El Paso at 7:00 p.m. To become an Excalibur Stepper,

CERT training schedule
The El Paso Police Department is offering free Community Emergency Response
Training through December at the Police Academy, 2300 Scenic Drive.
The courses will be held Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30
p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as follows: Aug. 16 through
18, Aug. 20, Sept. 13 through 15, Sept. 17, Oct. 11 through 13, Oct.
15, Nov. 15 through 17, Nov. 19, and Dec. 6 through 8 and Dec. 10. For

Hope Chapel services move
After a few more moments of flexibility and graciousness, the Chapel
4 renovations will be complete soon. Our apologies go out to anyone
who was confused by the last minute adjustments on Sunday 7 August.

American Red Cross
Volunteer Orientations are held every Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at

Lawn chair and a movie
The return of “Lawn Chair and a Movie” and the Farmer’s
Harvest Market at old Fort Bliss in September and in October respectively,
presents opportunities for family readiness groups to sell snacks and

Women’s Equality Day
Fort Bliss will conduct a Women’s Equality Day Observance Aug.
25 between 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Hall. This ceremony is in honor
of the contributions women have made to our nation. This event is free
and open to the Fort Bliss and El Paso communities. This year’s
theme is “Celebrating Women’s Right to Vote.” Anyone

“1964” comes to El Paso
The Abraham Chavez Theatre is proud to play host to “1964”
a tribute to the Beatles Saturday at 8 p.m. “1964” has toured
throughout the world performing at major concert venues, fairs, festivals,

Soccer program
Team Bliss Varsity Soccer Program is looking for players who are interested
in league play and possible tournament action. The team practices Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday from 6 to 7 a.m. at the fields just inside the

Texas Salsa Festival
The El Paso Empowerment Zone will have a Salsa Dance Competition at
the Texas Salsa Festival Sept. 4. The contest will have a youth, amateur,
and professional salsa dance competition categories judged by the El
Paso Ballroom Dance Academy, New Horizon Dance Academy, Lupe Duran,
Shundo, along with the World Salsa and Mambo Champions Carolina and
Felipe Telona, who will perform in a dance showcase.
The youth competition begins at 5:30 p.m. Sunday for ages 17 and younger.
The amateur competition for dancers ages 18 and above will begin at
7 p.m., followed by the professional competition for ages 18 and above
starting at 8:30 p.m. Prizes for competition winners include trophies
for first, second, and third place. In addition, there a month-long
scholarship to one of the area dance schools in partnership with the
Texas Salsa Festival will be awarded. Deadline for application submittal
is Aug. 26 and day-of entries will be on a cash basis only.

Dance teams wanted
The El Paso Empowerment Zone will host the Texas Salsa Festival Sept.
4. EPEZ is looking for local youth dance teams to perform to Latin Jazz
and Salsa music at the festival. Participants will perform on the Youth
Stage, along with the Fanta Girls and Regaton band Big Family. For information

Fiesta de las Flores
The League of United Latin American Citizens will host its annual Fiesta
de las Flores on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2 through 5, at the El Paso
County Coliseum. Sept. 5 is Military Appreciation Day, free admission
for all active military, family members, National Guard, Reserve and
retired military. Fiesta de las Flores include daily entertainment,
a carnival, food, game booths and much more. The Fort Bliss military
police will provide a K-9 Team demonstration and an MP Patrol Car with

Biker party
The American Legion Post 58 and the American Legion Riders are sponsoring
a biker party Aug. 27. Admission is free and there will be a DJ, full
bar, dance floor and a motorcycle rodeo. A bike show and slow drag races
are just two of many events. Trophies will be awarded to event winners.
There will be door prizes and drawings throughout the evening. The American
Legion is located at 4724 Vulcan St. Bike registration begins at 5:30
p.m., and the party begins at 6 p.m. This event is to raise money for
veterans in need and their families within the area. For information

Bliss historical meeting
The Fort Bliss Historical Association will hold their next monthly meeting
Sept. 7 at 1 p.m., at the Fort Bliss Museum, Bldg. 1735 Marshall Road.

Volunteer advisory council
The Volunteer Advisory Council will meet Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Army

Laffs for Literacy
To raise money for local libraries, People Skills, in partnership with
the El Paso Area Libraries consortium, and the El Paso Sports Commission,
is producing Laffs 4 Literacy Aug. 20 at the El Paso County Coliseum
at 8 p.m. This event will feature some of the finest comedians. Tickets

Oktoberfest 2005
The German Air Force Defense Center will host Oktoberfest 2005 Sept.
16 through Sept.18. The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday
and Saturday and will include a beer stein, a Bavarian dinner and a
raffle ticket, featuring the Bavarian Brass Band from Holledau. Sunday,
the event begins at noon. Doors will open one hour prior to the start
of the event each day. Admission for Friday and Saturday is $25, and
Sunday is $10. Tickets go on sale Friday and can be purchased in Bldg.

Civilian fitness program
Applications for the next civilian physical training program are now
being accepted. Civilians who take part in this program will be
allowed three hours of administrative leave per week for a total of
six months to participate. The program includes a pre and post
fitness assessment, health education classes, activity classes, including
weight training and aerobics, and supervised exercise instruction from
12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Stop by Stout Physical

Outdoor Adventure trips
In August, MWR Outdoor Adventures has the following trips planned: Carlsbad
Caverns: Aug. 13, $25. Cost includes admission to Carlsbad Caverns,

Dripping Springs and War Eagles Air Museum: Aug. 27, $16. Cost includes
admission to Dripping Springs and La Cueva, admission to the War Eagles

Hispanic heritage
Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Centennial, Officers’ Club,
and Golden Tee will commemorate Hispanic Heritage with an all-you-can-eat
Mexican lunch buffet. Celebrate Hispanic culture with authentic Mexican
food. Choose from an array of tacos, burritos, flautas, enchiladas,
steaming hot refried beans, fresh salsa and crisp tortilla chips. The
buffet at the O’ Club is $5.25 for members and $6.25 for non-members,

Italian Night
Aug. 26 and Sept. 23, it’s Italian Night at the Fort Bliss Officers’
Club. From 6 to 9 p.m., the O’ Club will feature an all-you-care-to-eat
Italian buffet including a variety of pastas, sauces, meatballs, lasagna,
salad bar, assorted desserts and beverages. Italian Night is open to
the Fort Bliss community. Members pay $9.95, non-members pay $11.95

Kids-n-Co.
Mickelsen Community Library is proud to host the Kids-n-Co. Story Troupe
Aug. 20 at 10:30 a.m. The Kids-n-Co. Story Troupe is one of the outreach
components of El Paso Kids-n-Co. The group of young actors tells stories
to encourage literacy, plant the seeds of imagination, and introduce
children to the wonder of books. A cross-section of literature
is used that includes cultural awareness, humor, and drama. The program
is appropriate for children ages 3 to 12.
Team Bliss judo
All Soldiers interested in being a member of the Team Bliss Judo Team
are invited to start attending practices held in the Combative Training
Room in Bldg. 60. Experience is preferred but not required. Practices
are held: Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 5:30 to 7:30 a.m., and on Tuesday

Summer reading program ends
Aug. 13, Mickelsen Community Library will host an awards ceremony and
party for all the Fort Bliss children who participated in the summer
reading program. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with the presentation
of the awards. That will be followed by a presentation of a marionette
puppet show of “Hansel and Gretel” performed by members
of the El Paso Opera Company. Refreshments will conclude the program.
Men’s bowling
Aug. 23 there will be an organization meeting. At present, we have 20
teams that showed interest in the only men’s league at Fort Bliss
Bowling Center. We have room to expand to 32 teams. Interested teams
or individuals can sign up for this league at the Fort Bliss Bowling
Center, or call John Spates at 751-6197 or the bowling center 568-6272.
Senior bowling
Aug. 19 there will be an organization meeting for the Friday Seniors
Handicap Bowling League. To bowl in this league you have to be a senior
50 years young or older. At present we have 18 teams and we have room
for 24 teams. Interested teams or individuals can sign up for this league
at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center or call John Spates at 751-6197 or
the bowling center 568-6272.
Bowling leagues
Several Fort Bliss Bowling Leagues are signing up new members. Aug.
19: Friday, Seniors Handicap Bowling, participants must be 50 years
or older. Aug. 23: Center Men’s Handicap Bowling League. To sign

31: Golden Age Senior Mixed Bowling League, participants must be 50
years or older, to sign up call 751-1340. Sept. 6: Ladies Tuesday Evening
Bowling League, females of all ages are eligible, four to a team, to

The Bowling Center also hosts the Las Vegas Bowling League Thursday

Ballet and dance class
Youth Services dance classes will be held at the Fort Bliss Youth Center,
Bldg. 195. Participants must be registered with Central Registration
to participate. Payment is due at time of registration in order to ensure
placement in the class. To maintain enrollment in class, payment is
due two weeks prior to the beginning of month. For information call

Rhythm and Dance 1 (through July 29 and Aug. 5 through 31): For 3 to
5 year olds Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 3:30 p.m. (Transportation
will be provided for weekly children who attend CDC), and from 3:30
to 4 p.m. Cost for classes is $35 per month. This class will combine
gross motor skills such as skipping, jumping, gallops, and other moves
to music. One recital per year will be presented to showcases students
progress.
Rhythm and Dance 2 (through July 29 and Aug. 5 through 31): For elementary
school age children, Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and 4:30
to 5 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. This class will help advance learning
dances such as basic hip-hop and jazz, country line dances, and creative
movement in preparation for more advanced classes. One recital per year
will be presented to showcases students progress.
Pre-ballet (Sept. 7 through 30): For 3 to 5 year olds Wednesday and
Friday from 3 to 3:30 p.m. (Transportation will be provided for weekly
children who attend CDC), and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $35 per month.
The instructor will introduce basic ballet movements to students, concentrating
on developing gross motor skills, listening to music, learning to count
beats, and musical expression. These are half hour classes designed
to prepare the dancer for Primary Ballet Class. One recital per year
will be presented.
Primary Ballet (Sept. 7 through 30): For school age elementary children,
Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. Primary
ballet for elementary students follows a primary syllabus that includes
plies, tendus, chasses, gallops skips, and other preparatory ballet
exercises. Each will lead to the preparation of a short dance and prepare
the student for further studies. One recital per year will be presented
to showcases students progress.
Ballet 1 (Sept. 7 through 30: For elementary students ages 6 and older,
Wednesday and Friday 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Cost for this class is $50 per
month. Class will be instruction geared to those who are interested
in a serious ballet program. The course will follow a structured syllabus
that will focus on developing a ballet technique. One recital per year
will be presented to showcases students progress.
BOSS getaway

CDS special openings
Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services are available for childcare during
your unit special events for a minimum of 20 reservations. Payment must
be made in advance. Contact Elizabeth Bernal at Central Enrollment and
Registration, 569-5040.
CYS payment fee
Fees for CDS and SAS regularly scheduled full-time or part-day programs
are due on the first of the month. For your convenience, parents may
choose to pay the full fee on the first of the month or to pay half
on the first and the other half on the 15th of the month. Fees not paid
within three days after the 1st and/or 15th will incur a late fee. Once
the fees are 15 days past due, the Soldier’s commander will be
notified. At 20 days past due, CYS must terminate services. At
30 days past due, CYS will contact DMWR Financial Management Division
to initiate DD 139 (Pay Adjustment Authorization) action and the delinquent
sum will be deducted from the Soldier’s paycheck. Any time fees
are owed in any program, the family can not enroll the child in another

Brass bartending
Friday Unit Nights (a.k.a. Brass Bartending) are still going on strong.
The following units have scheduled their night, so come out and support
your fellow Soldiers: Aug. 12: William Beaumont FRG in Pershing Pub;
and Aug. 19: 11th Brigade in the Down Under. September is the last chance
to sign up your unit for the O’ Club’s ever popular Brass
Bartending/ Unit Sponsored Night. Open dates are Sept. 16 and Sept.
30. MWR BOD Special Events will plan more fun and unique events for
the Officers’ Club bar operations in the fall and winter. For

Family care plan policies
Family care plans are required for all single and dual military parents
to ensure the safety and well being of your child. Two copies of
this plan will be maintained, one at central enrollment and one copy
in the child’s file in the primary child care setting. Parents
will provide updated information to CER annually or more frequently
if necessary to update information. This information allows us to ensure
the care of your child in your absence. Parents are given 30 days from
the date of registration to provide CER with a copy of completed FCP,
DA 5305-R. If DA 5305-R is not received within those 30 days, services
will be terminated until such time as the DA 5305-R is provided. For

Parenting classes
Parenting is a challenge, and most parents share the same goal, “to
raise a confident, respectful, self-reliant, responsible, cooperative
child”, according to the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting
of Children under Six. Free Parenting Classes are available at the Army
Community Service Center, Bldg. 2494 on Ricker Rd. The classes teach
parents how to understand behavior, building your child’s self-esteem,
listening and talking to them, helping them learn to cooperate, disciplining
and their social and emotional development. Parenting styles will also
be discussed. The class is based on the book The Systematic Training
for Effective Parenting by Don Dinkmeyer Sr., Gary D. Mckay, James S.
Dinkmeyer, Don Dinkmeyer, Jr. Joyce L. Mckay, which is used by over
half a million parents.
Toddler playgroup change
The Army Community Services Center’s Toddler Playgroup’s
location has been permanently changed to the Fort Bliss Bowling Center
(playroom). The playgroup meets from 10 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and

Football Sundays
Beginning Sept. 11, the Down Under Sports Bar at the Officer’s
Club and the Metro Station at the Centennial will offer NFL Sunday Ticket
every Sunday. Both clubs will open at 11 a.m. and offer multiple broadcasted
games daily. Free snacks will be available and patrons may choose their
favorite bottle or draft beer - both import and domestic. The Officer’s
Club will also feature Sunday Brunch before the game. For information

Kelly Park
Under the Residential Housing Initiative, Kelly Park on Marshall Road
is now operated and maintained by GMH Military Housing. The facility

Organizational days and MWR equipment rental (jumping balloons, dunk
tank, big grills, event tents, etc.) will now be located at Biggs Park.

Night run
The 12th Annual FirstLight Federal Credit Union German-American Oktoberfest
Night Run is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Kelly Park. The event is open
to all community members. Participants may sign up for either the 8K
Run (5 miles) or the 5K Fun Walk (3.1 miles). Entry fees are $15 in
advance and $20 the day of race. Military unit teams may run in the
military competition, with the top five individual finishing times going
toward their team’s overall time. Teams may include up to ten
individuals, and the entry fee is $120 per military unit team. First
through third place teams receive cash awards to their unit funds. Information
sheets, with registration forms, are available at Stout Fitness Center,
Fort Bliss ITR, most El Paso sport stores, and YMCA and YWCA locations.

Teen council
Fort Bliss Youth Services is establishing a new Teen Council. This group
will be actively involved with the planning and the development
of activities offered at Fort Bliss Youth Services, to include organizing
teen programs such as fieldtrips, dances, community outreach, and youth
sponsorship. Youth between 13 to 18 years of age who want to make a

The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club has welcome nights every Friday

with purchase of snack bar special; and $1 games Monday and Tuesday

Army Soldier Show
The 2005 U.S. Army Soldier Show comes here on August 19 at 7 p.m. and
August 20 at 2 p.m. at Soldier Hall, Bldg. 2, to perform “Operation
America Cares,” a 90-minute song and dance production that expresses
the importance of giving deployed Soldiers a touch of home. The show
will focus on how Soldiers deal with the stresses of war and long deployments.
Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis; no tickets are issued.

Wine and dinner
The Fort Bliss Officers’ Club cordially invites you to sample

having an intimate date with that special someone, our Wine and Dinner

Tennis and fitness
The Fort Bliss Tennis Club and Fitness Zone, Bldg. 262, offers a five-court
tennis club, fitness area with a 20-piece circuit training room, and
two practice courts. The workout area features hydraulic weight machines,
cardio equipment and a “Romper Area” for small children
to play under their parent’s supervision while working out. The
facility will have a tiered monthly payment rate ranging from $20 to
$35, depending on factors such as rank, additional family members, length
of membership and whether the member is using only the Tennis Club or
Fitness Zone or both. Those DoD civilians enrolled in the six-month
long Fort Bliss Civilian Fitness Program may attend for free. Off-post
civilians who become a member of the facility will be issued a special

Dive in
Join MWR August 20 for a wet and wild time at the Community Pool’s
“Dive In!” Join us for fun and food as we play great movies
at the pool. Parents and kids can arrive at the starlit cinema at 7
p.m. or patrons can come early in the day and stay until night. The
free movie starts at 8:30 p.m. Because this is a special event, no outside
food or beverages are allowed; however, patrons may purchase snacks
for a minimal cost. Watching a movie will never be the same. Fort Bliss

Veterinary services
The Vet Clinic offers Walk-In Wellness clinics (vaccines, microchips,
de-worming, heartworm and feline leukemia tests) every Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. If you pet
needs to be seen for something other than vaccines, we offer sick call
appointments every Tuesday and Thursday. Call 569-2266 to schedule an
appointment. Lobby hours for clearing, pet registration and for sale
of Heartguard medications and flea and tick preventatives are Monday
through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.; and Friday from
9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.
Bench press competition
Fort Bliss MWR Sports will host an Amateur Athletic Union Bench Press
Competition Sept. 24 at Stout Gym. This is a military Bench Press National
Championship and is open to all branches of the service. Weigh-ins begin
at 8 a.m.; competition at 10 a.m. Cost for participating for males and
females is $30, which includes the entry fee, a t-shirt and competition
medial for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes. AAU Powerlifting rules apply
and may be accessed at www.aausports.org. All entries must be postmarked
no later than Sept. 3 and should be sent certified mail with return

ACS classes
Army Community Service offers a variety of services to assist the Army
family. The following are offered: Toddler Playgroup: The ACS Toddler
Playgroup has permanently changed location to the playroom at the Fort
Bliss Bowling Alley Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon ages 18
months to 3 and a half years old. The Toddler Playgroup will meet during
the summer months at Kelly Park Tuesday and Biggs Water Park Thursday.
In case of inclement weather the group will meet at the Fort Bliss Bowling
Alley. The Infant Playgroup will meet Thursday at the Fort Bliss Youthplex
from 10 to 11 a.m. for ages 5 months to 18 months. The playgroups are
an excellent way to meet other military parents within the Fort Bliss
Community while enhancing your child’s social, emotional and physical

School registration
Kindergarten and preschool registration is now being accepted for the
2005/2006 school year for Kindergarten (Monday through Friday, noon
until 3 p.m., at the Main CDC), Preschool (Monday, Wednesday, Friday,
from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Main CDC), and Preschool (Monday through Friday,
8:30 to 11 a.m. at Logan CDC). Rates are based on total family income

Karaoke
The Officers’ Club hosts karaoke in the Pershing Pub every Friday
“Elvis” Rob Langford sets up at 5:30 and plays until 11
p.m., providing MWR patrons with one of the largest selections of karaoke
songs in El Paso. Relax, sing along, and have a nice cold beverage to
begin the weekend with your friends at the Fort Bliss Officers’

The Fort Bliss Bowling Center hosts karaoke nights for MWR patrons and
guests Thursday and Friday nights. Karaoke King takes to the stage beginning
at 7:30 and plays until 11 p.m. Thursday and 12:30 a.m. Friday in the

including family members and civilians, must be at least 21 to drink

A league of their own
Starting in June and lasting throughout the summer, MWR Special Events
will implement a new program at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center. The center
will offer group bowling lessons for kids on selected Saturdays, every
month of summer. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn a very
exciting sport and have fun at the same time. From noon to 2 p.m., kids
will be able to learn new skills, bowl with friends, and have a free
snack (hot dog, chips, and soda) all for just $8. For information call

The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, Fort Bliss Officers’

JAG
The Office of The Judge Advocate General is now accepting applications
for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program. Under this program,
the Army projects sending up to 15 active duty commissioned officers
to law school at government expense if funding permits. Selected officers
will attend law school beginning the fall of 2006 and will remain on
active duty while attending law school.
Interested officers should review Chapter 14, AR 27-1 (The Judge Advocate
General’s Funded Legal Education Program) to determine their eligibility.
This program is open to commissioned officers in the rank of second
lieutenant through captain. Applicants must have at least two but not
more than six years of total active Federal service at the time legal
training begins. Eligibility is governed by statute (10 U.S.C. 2004)
and is non-waivable.
Eligible officers interested in applying should immediately register
for the fall offering of the Law School Admission Test. Applicants must
send their request through command channels, to include the officer’s
branch manager at AHRC, with a copy furnished to the Office of The Judge
Advocate General, ATTN: DAJA-PT (Yvonne Caron), 1777 North Kent
Street, Rosslyn, VA 22209-2194, to be received before Nov.1. Submission
of the application well in advance of the deadline is advised.

PCS/ETS
PCSing to a new installation? The Army Community Service relocation
programs will provide you with automated welcome packets on any DoD
military installation worldwide while you wait. Assigned to an isolated
location far from an installation? Not a problem. Internet access will
provide localized information. How do you find that isolated location
within CONUS? Computerized route-maps will take you there. Soldiers
clearing the installation are advised that strip maps, showing the location
of all agencies that must be cleared, are available at the Army Community
Service relocation desk at Bldg. 2494, which is also a required stop
in the clearing process. Avoid becoming “geographically challenged”

Thursday night bowling
You are invited to the Thursday Night Las Vegas Mixed Bowling League.
Competition will begin Sept. 8. The league meeting, and advanced registration,
will be held Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m., Fort Bliss Bowling Center. Las Vegas
is a multiple skill level league that includes beginners to professional
bowlers competing on 5-person teams. Certified bowling coaches are also

EORC Class 04-05 graduation ceremony will be held Friday at, 2 p.m.

Unit funds
As a reminder to all unit fund representatives, note that all unit fund
money allocated by MWR in FY05 must be used by Sept. 30. The unit fund
allocation of funds is planned again in FY06 and is based on unit strength
with each unit receiving $2.50 per Soldier per year. Funds raised by
the unit through fund-raising activities can be carried over to the
next fiscal year. Any unit not registered with a unit fund account should

Keep El Paso Beautiful
Keep El Paso Beautiful has fully stocked tool sheds ready for use. All

Sexual assault response program
The Installation Sexual Assault Response Program will conduct Unit Victim
Advocate Training Aug. 22 through 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at
ACS, Bldg. 2492. Each battalion, as per AR 600-20, pg. 2, should have,
at a minimum, 2 Unit Victim Advocates. Unit Victim Advocates must be
Staff Sgt. or above if enlisted or 1st Lt., Warrant Officer (2) if officer.
If civilian, must be a GS-9 or higher. Selection criteria for the Unit
Victim Advocates are located in AR 600-20, pg. 20. AR 600-20 can be

Bowling birthdays
The Fort Bliss Bowling Center offers four different birthday packages,
all at unbeatably low prices. There is a minimum of six children required
for a party and each package includes party hats and balloons. The get-together
is set up by the Fort Bliss Bowling Center Staff to the rear of the
lanes. Our packages are as follows:
Package #1 is $6 per child and includes a hot dog with chips and a fountain
drink, one free game of bowling and one free shoe rental.
Package #2 is $6.50 per child and includes one slice of pepperoni or
sausage pizza. A 12 oz. fountain drink, one free game of bowling, and

Package #3 is $6.50 per child and includes one slice of cheese pizza,

Red Cross seminar
The American Red Cross, El Paso Emergency Medical Services will hold
a DefibNow! Seminar Aug. 25 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. This seminar will be
held at Currey Adkins, 200 South Alto Mesa, West El Paso, off of Mesa
between Resler and Thunderbird.
San Antonio Lighthouse
Nov. 19 San Antonio Lighthouse and the San Antonio Delta Gamma Alumnae
Chapter presents Heirloom Appraisal Day. Bring your prized heirloom
to the Airport Convention Center at 8505 Broadway in San Antonio and
get a verbal appraisal for $10. Event is similar to the “Antique
Road Show” shown on PBS. Participants can purchase tickets by
phone prior to event or at the door on Nov. 19. Appraisers from all
around Texas will be present to verbally appraise items ranging from
fine china to antique paintings. Proceeds will benefit the Focus On
Seniors Program — a free program for seniors over the age of 55
