Bradley Chapter takes second title, 18 others at national meeting

Fort Bliss’ General of the Army Omar Bradley Chapter of the Association
of the U.S. Army earned 19 awards – including Best Chapter for the
second straight year – during the Oct. 3-5 national AUSA meeting
in Washington, D.C.
Fort Bliss had 69 attendees – one of their largest ever –
at the annual event. The 19 streamers and awards the Bradley Chapter earned
were the most of the 125 AUSA worldwide chapters.
Representatives from Fort Bliss included Brig. Gen. Robert Lennox, commander
of the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center and Fort Bliss; Center Command
Sgt. Maj. Stanley Davis; Col. Heidi Brown, Fort Bliss Chief of Staff;
Brig. Gen. Francis Mahon, commander of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense
Command; 32nd AAMDC Command Sgt. Maj. Julio Torres and numerous other
unit commanders and command sergeants major.
Special guests and sponsored Soldiers of the Omar Bradley Chapter were
Spc. Michele Douty, Fort Bliss Soldier of the Year; Staff Sgt. Spencer
Knight, NCO of the Year; Sgt. 1st Class Benjamin Hartwig, Drill Sergeant
of the Year and Staff Sgt. Jerry Jacobitz, Bradley leadership award NCO
of the Year.
El Paso Mayor John Cook led the city’s contingent, which was grouped
with Fort Bliss Soldiers and known as Team El Paso. Bob Cook from the
Regional Economic Development Corporation; Richard Dayoub, president of
the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce; Gus Rodriguez, president of the
Armed Forces Committee; and Dee Margo, chairman of the Greater El Paso
Chamber of Commerce were the other key representatives. Altogether, 15
Team El Paso members conducted office calls with members of the Pentagon,
senators, congressmen and directors from Capitol Hill throughout the week.
The Bradley Chapter sponsored a barbecue lunch Oct. 1 for the Team Bliss
Army Ten Miler running team and distinguished Fort Bliss Soldiers at
the Fort Belvoir, Va., golf course. The annual event, organized by the
ADA branch at Human Resources Command and known as the “ADA Round-up,”
is an opportunity for past and present Air Defenders to assemble once
a year in Washington.
Oct. 2, the Bradley Chapter and the El Paso office of Pioneer Services
sponsored the Team Bliss Army Ten Miler “Hooah” tent. The
tent is designed to provide refreshments and nourishment to the USASMA
and Team Bliss Army Ten Miler running teams after the run. Special Team
Bliss/AUSA Bradley Chapter polo shirts were also provided to the Team
Bliss and USASMA teams, compliments of the Bradley Chapter.The Bradley
Chapter hosted El Paso Night Oct. 4 at the Willard Hotel in Washington.
The event served as the venue for the Bradley Chapter’s general
membership meeting in conjunction with the AUSA annual meeting.
Bradley Chapter President Mark Avery opened the general membership meeting
by welcoming the 250 guests, by providing a chapter update and by introducing
Douty, Knight, Hartwig and Jacobitz as special guests. Avery provided
a rundown of events the Bradley Chapter conducted in the past year and
its achievement of being awarded as best chapter again for 2005.
Lennox welcomed active and retired Air Defenders from around the world.
A special thanks was given to U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes for attending
the El Paso Night function.
