Post-wide yard sale
Fort Bliss will host a post-wide yard sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oct.
29, in all housing units here, Biggs, Beaumont, Logan Heights, Hayes
and 801 housing which is located off Martin Luther King Blvd. Those
who want to participate in the yard sale may simply display their items
during the designated times; no formal permission is required. This
event is open to the El Paso, Juarez and surrounding communities. All
guests entering Fort Bliss property will be required to have a valid
driver’s license, proof of insurance, valid car registration,
safety inspection sticker, and will be subject to vehicle search. Military
police will not allow yard sale shoppers in the housing areas prior
to 7 a.m. All Fort Bliss residents are encouraged to participate. For

Adopt a
Soldier
Each year hundreds of Soldiers in Advanced Individual Training at Fort
Bliss spend Thanksgiving Day far from home and family. Over the past
thirty plus years, what would be an uneventful day has become a very
special holiday, thanks to many El Paso area families. The Thanksgiving
Adopt-A-Soldier Program matches Soldiers with civilian and military
families on Thanksgiving Day. The 1st Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery,
invites El Paso families to share their homes and Thanksgiving holiday
with a Soldier on Nov. 24. Interested families should contact Sgt. Luz
Carrillo or Spc. Ortiz Luna at the battalion headquarters by calling
568-2504 during normal working hours. When you call, we will need your
name, telephone number, and the number of Soldiers you are willing to
host in your home. Call no later than Monday, Nov. 14. The Thanksgiving
Home Visitation Program will begin at 8 a.m., Nov. 24, at Stout Gymnasium,
Bldg. 2930. Host families are invited to join for a brief opening ceremony.
Following the ceremony, families will be introduced to their Soldiers
for the day.
Sergeant Major Association
The El Paso Sergeants Major Association will celebrate its 14th anniversary
on Saturday; the celebration will take place at Biggs Park from 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. The association invites all active and retired sergeants major
and command sergeants major to come out and participate in this event.

Dave Roever to speak
Dave Roever, a Vietnam disabled veteran, will be the guest speaker at
the Team White Sands Disability Awareness Month Observance 11:30 a.m.
Oct. 31 at the Post Theater. Roever, who was burned beyond recognition
while serving his country, has overcome physical adversity and brings
a perspective of combat-tempered heroism that adds value to his message
of hope, optimism and patriotism. Tickets for the event are $5. For

Unit funds
As soon as possible, unit fund representatives must turn in new assumption
of command orders, DA Form 1687 signature card and alpha roster in order
to receive their FY06 allocation of MWR funds. The allocation is based
on unit strength with each unit receiving $2.50 per Soldier. For more

Red Cross CPR
The American Red Cross will offer CPR classes Saturday Oct. 29 from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hilos de Plata Center, 4451 Delta Drive. The course
is normally $40 but is being offered for only $10 as an incentive for

Health workshop
Concepts and Methods in Health Research will offer a workshop Oct. 31
through Nov. 4. Registration and networking begins at 8:30 a.m. and
the workshop starts at 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop will be held
at the Stanton Professional Bldg. 1100 North Stanton, Suite 401. Lunch

Win a night out
Win a free car rental for the whole weekend (a PT Cruiser convertible)
and dinner at a local restaurant. Write a 300 word or fewer essays about
why your parents and grandparents deserve a night out on the town. The
contest is open to all children under the age of 14. The car rental
will be available Friday Oct. 28 and will need to be returned Oct. 31.

Haunted house
The American Legion Post #58 has erected a haunted house just in time
for the Halloween festivities in order to provide area children a safe

All-Army wrestling
A free wrestling clinic will be offered by the All-Army Wrestling Team
Oct. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Stout Gym. This is a great opportunity
to lean new techniques and hone skills for the next high school wrestling

Disability luncheon
In honor of National Disability Employment Aware-ness Month there will

Library hours
Now the Community Library is open late to serve the customer better.
New hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays

Warrant officer recruits
A Warrant Officer Recruiting Team from Headquarters, U.S. Army Recruiting
Command, Fort Knox, Ky. will brief on qualifications and application
procedures to all Soldiers interested in becoming U.S. Army Warrant
Officers. The briefing is for Soldiers considering applying to become
a Warrant Officer in any MOS. All Soldiers are encouraged to attend.

Warrant officer info
The office, Chief of Air Defense Artillery is assisting Soldiers in
putting together packets in preparation for the upcoming warrant officer
selection boards. Openings are available for military occupational specialty
140A, Command and Control Systems Technician, and MOS 140E, Air Missile
Defense Technician/Tactician (Patriot System Technician). Air Defense
is seeking applicants from career management fields 12, 25, 35 and 95
for the 140 series MOS. Information on prerequisites and sample packets

Sewing classes
SKIESUNLIMITED is offering sewing classes Nov. 1 through 30 at Logan
Child Development Center, Bldg 3500. Classes will be Tuesday and Wednesday
for 7 years and up 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. and for ages 12 and up from 5:30
to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $30 for eight classes. Classes will consist of
sewing safety, basic knowledge of sewing, straight stitching, measuring
fabrics, bias of fabrics, putting plaids together, creating a simple
pattern for a pillow, making a pillow, no supplies needed, everything

Halloween classic
The 2005 Men’s and Women’s Halloween Basketball Classic
is slated for Oct. 28 through 30 at Logan Heights Physical Fitness Center.
This double elimination tournament is open to both military and civilian
teams. Teams will consist of twelve players with one non-playing coach.
First, second and third place team trophies will be awarded, as will
first and second place individual awards. The entry fee is $200 per
team, which includes t-shirts for all members. Registration and checks,

Renovations
Renovations have begun on Bldg. 1743. These renovations will increase
the size of the area used by CYS and Central Registration and Enrollment.
The renovations will provide additional office space and space for the
Family Child Care Providers lending library.
CYS fall festivals
Child and Youth Services Fall Festivals will be held Oct. 31 from 9
to 11 a.m. in both the Main and Logan Child Development Centers. The
classrooms will be transformed into age-appropriate activity areas with
games and goodies for the little ones to enjoy. All children are
invited to participate. The event will also feature a presentation of
Humbug Witch, a story of make believe and pretend. Parents are
asked to bring a small bag of individually wrapped candy. For details,

Women’s Aglow
“Content in All Things” will be the theme for the Women’s
Aglow International Fort Bliss Lighthouse. All ladies of the community
are invited to attend the special program and finger food lunch from

International’s Fort Bliss Lighthouse meets from 11:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. once a month, the last Tuesday of every other month February
through October for worship, fellowship, and prayer and Bible study.

Hallelujah Festival
The “Hallelujah Festival”, a Christian alternative to Halloween,
will be held on Monday, Oct. 31, at Center Chapel Four Bldg. 2498, corner
of JEB Stuart and Ricker Roads. The activities will begin with worship
especially for children at 6 p.m. A large variety of game booths, moon
jump, giant slide, costume judging of biblical costumes, and activities
for the entire family will open at 6:20 p.m. and will continue until
8 p.m. There will be prizes and candy galore. Hot dogs and chips will
be served free of charge, beginning at 6:20 p.m. everyone is invited

SMA anniversary celebration

Veteran’s Day Gala
There will be a Veteran’s Day Gala Nov. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the
Fort Bliss Air Defense Artillery Museum. There will be a silent auction
and cash bar. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The dress code will be
Class A uniforms for military personnel and business attire for civilian
attendees. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the ADA Association

Military pilots

Turkey Voucher Program
Fort Bliss MWR is asking for contributions to the Army Community Service
Turkey Voucher Program. This annual program supplements the holiday
meal for active duty Soldiers, retirees and family members in the Fort
Bliss community who experience financial hardships during the holidays.

Turkey assistance
Once again, Army Community Service will sponsor a Thanksgiving Voucher
Program where food vouches will be issued to eligible Soldiers and family
members to purchase food items in the Commissary for Thanksgiving Day.
This food voucher program is intended to supplement the holiday meal
for active duty and family members on Thanksgiving Day. There are no
rank restrictions; each nomination will be considered on an individual
basis. Nominations must be turned in to ACS by close of business Oct.

Fall festival
Fall Festival Celebration will be held at the Apollo Heights Baptist
Church Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m. at 10450 Kenworthy Street.
As an alternative to house to house trick or treating families and friends
are welcome to an evening of fun and games each with prizes, candies

Karaoke
The Officers’ Club hosts karaoke in the Pershing Pub every Friday.
“Elvis” Rob Langford sets up at 5:30 p.m. providing MWR
patrons with one of the largest selections of karaoke songs in El Paso.
Relax, sing along, and have a nice cold beverage to begin the weekend
with friends at the Fort Bliss Officers’ Club. For information,
call 568-7013. The Fort Bliss Bowling Center hosts karaoke nights for
MWR patrons and guests Friday and Saturday nights. Karaoke King takes
to the stage at 8 p.m. and plays until 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the center’s
lounge. As a reminder, all non-active duty military guests, including
family members and civilians, must be at least 21 to drink alcoholic

Change of command ceremony
The German Air Force Air Defense Center will have a change of command
at the Old Fort Bliss Museum, Oct. 28, at 10 a.m. The commander of the
GAF Command USA and Canada, Col. Heinz-Joachim Hecht, will transfer
the command of the GAFADC from Col. Klaus Habersetzer to Lt. Col. Uwe
Haenel.
Dance and ballet class
SKIESUNLIMITED dance classes will be held at the Youth Center, Bldg.
195. Participants must register with central registration to participate.
Payment is due at time of registration in order to ensure placement
in the class. To maintain enrollment in class, payment is due two weeks
prior to the beginning of month. One recital per year will be presented

Rhythm and dance 1 (Nov. 2 through 20): For 3 to 5 year olds Wednesday
and Friday from 3 to 3:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Transportation for
the 3 p.m. class will be provided for weekly children who attend CDC.Cost
for classes is $35 per month.
Rhythm and dance 2 (Nov. 2 through 20): For elementary school age children,
Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 5 p.m. Cost is
$35 per month.
Pre-ballet (Nov. 2 through 20): For 3 to 5– year– olds Wednesday
and Friday from 3 to 3:30 p.m and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Transportation for
the 3 p.m. class will be provided for weekly children who attend CDC.
Cost is $35 per month.
Primary ballet (Oct. 5 through 28 and Nov. 2 through 20): For school
age elementary children, Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Cost
is $35 per month.
Ballet 1 (Oct. 5 through 28 and Nov. 2 through 20): For elementary students
ages 6 and older, Wednesday and Friday 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Cost for this
class is $50 per month.
All-Army boxing trials
The All-Army boxing tryouts are scheduled for Jan. 3 through 24, 2006,
at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. The application deadline for qualified boxers
is Nov. 15.
A maximum of four applicants per weight class will be selected. Boxers
should see the post Sports Office for an application and certificate
of amateurism. Fighters will also need a medical exam and verification
of a dental-fitted mouthpiece. Boxers must be current members of USA
Boxing and have a valid USA Boxing passbook. Boxers may apply for the
$35 membership at the trials in January. The Army coaching staff will
screen all applications and make recommendations for selection.
Substance abuse program
The Army Substance Abuse Program will be closed Oct. 20 and 21 to move
to their new location in Bldg. 2436, 2437 and 2438. The drug testing
collection point will not be accepting samples during this time frame.
Units are encouraged to continue drug testing, but must store samples
in accordance with the Unit Prevention Leader guidebook. Normal operating
hours will resume Oct. 24 at 7:30 a.m. at our new location on Cassidy
Road next to Milam Gym. Bldg. 2437 will have all the drug testing and
the educational classroom. Bldg. 2438 will have the administrative offices,
the prevention offices and the Risk Reduction Program. The Employee
Assistance Program Office will be in Bldg. 2436 which is the trailer

Ghost stories
Ghost stories told at the Old Fort Bliss by Army veteran and author,
Ken Hudnall. Hudnall’s books include The Manhattan Conspiracy
and The Ghosts of Fort Bliss, the History and Mystery of the Border.
The ghosts of Fort Bliss storytelling begins Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. by
campfire at the Old Fort Bliss, snacks available. Come hear the stories
of your quarters, your workplace and of the various buildings on Fort

Scholarship fundraiser
The Pfc. Howard Johnson II Scholarship is named in honor of Pfc. Howard
Johnson II, who was assigned to the 507th Maintenance Company, and was
killed in action during the earlier stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Pfc. Howard Johnson scholarship committee looks for applicants who
demonstrate many of the outstanding qualities Johnson displayed throughout
his life such as; community service, duty to others, our nation, sacrifice
for the good of others, loyalty, selfless service, honor, integrity
and personal courage. The scholarship fund drive will go through Dec.

La Viña Winery will host a Halloween walk costume contest for

Holiday Bazaar
The holidays are approaching fast. Find a gift for that special someone
at the Fort Bliss Holiday Bazaar happening on Nov. 5 and 6. Hours for
Nov. 5 are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and hours for Nov. 6 are 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. This event will take place at the Fort Bliss Stout Gym. Cost
is $1. There will be arts and crafts, collectibles, antiques, dolls,
food and entertainment. There will be over 120 vendors with many items

New DFAS hours
Defense military pay office customer service hours have changed. The
new hours are 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for
walk-ins, and noon to 4 p.m. for appointments only. The hours Thursday
are 8 a.m. to noon closed for training, noon to 2 p.m. open for walk-in
and 2 to 4 p.m. appointments only.
Sun City Soldier wants you
“Sun City Soldier” is looking for outstanding servicemembers
who are giving 110 percent to their units and local community through
volunteerism. SCS wants to spotlight their efforts on the show. The
show is also looking for talented Soldiers to anchor SCS. The anchor
position requires one day of taping during the week, and approval from

Host families needed
There are a number of families who can enjoy a special experience by
welcoming into their homes high school exchange students from countries
around the world. These volunteer families are participating in the
SHARE! Student Exchange Program for the 2005-2006 school years. These
international exchange students are eager to learn about how Americans
live. However, host families are still needed to host international
exchange students for this school year. The host family will provide
a bed, meals, as well as friendship, understanding. For more information,

San Antonio Lighthouse
Nov. 19 San Antonio Lighthouse and the San Antonio Delta Gamma Alumnae
Chapter presents Heirloom Appraisal Day. Bring prized heirlooms to the
Airport Convention Center at 8505 Broadway in San Antonio, Texas, and
get a verbal appraisal for $10. The event is similar to the "Antique
Road Show" shown on PBS. Participants can purchase tickets by phone
prior to event or at the door Nov. 19. Appraisers from all around Texas
will be present to verbally appraise items ranging from fine china to
antique paintings. Proceeds will benefit the Focus on Seniors Program
– a free program for seniors over the age of 55 with vision impairments.

Football Sundays
The Down Under Sports Bar at the Officers’ Club and the Metro
Station at the Centennial will offer NFL Sunday Ticket every Sunday.
Both clubs will open at 11 a.m. and offer multiple broadcasted games

bottle or draft beer both import and domestic. The Officers’ Club

The Bowling Center introduces NFL Crunch Time every Monday night in

Thursday night bowling
There are currently openings for the Thursday Nite Las Vegas Mixed Bowling
League. Las Vegas is a multiple skill level league that includes beginners
to professional bowlers competing on five person teams. Certified bowling

Main Street Espresso
In addition to featuring Starbucks coffees and beverages, the Main Street
Espresso, Bldg. 1310 Cassidy Road, offers breakfast sandwiches, pastries
and Panini sandwiches. Stop by for free WiFi or cruise through the drive-thru.
The Main Street Espresso can also cater various functions. Business
hours are Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. or Saturday

Spinning program
For those ready to burn some calories and ride your way to fitness.
Bikes are in and classes are now underway. Schedules are now available
at Stout Gym. Burning approximately 900 calories in a one-hour class,
this is one of the most intense workouts available. The class consists
of loud, base-thumping music and energetic instructors leading a group
of cyclists on an extreme, sweat-filled ride to fitness. For information

SKIESUNLIMITED is offering Tae Kwon Do Martial Arts classes facilitated
by Andrew Choi, a certified Tae Kwon Do instructor at Bldg. 195, Fort
Bliss Youth Center. Classes are ongoing through Oct. 29. Classes will
take place Wednesday for ages 6 to 12 years old from 6 to 7 p.m.; 13
and up from 7 to 8 p.m.; Saturday classes for children ages 6 and up
from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and ages 13 and up from 12:30 to 1:30
p.m. Cost is $35 for eight classes, two classes per week. For further

Essay contest
SKIESUNLIMITED through the MWR child and youth programs is conducting
an essay contest entitled “What is it like to be a Military Child.”
Winners will be selected from three divisions: elementary (minimum of
100 words), middle school (175 words), and high school (300 words).
Each essay should include, but is not limited to the following topics:
moving frequently, transitioning to a new school, leaving old friends,
family, a parent being deployed, and making new friends. Participants
must drop off the essay at any MWR CYS facility, Child Development Center,
Youth Services Center, Teen Center Bldg. 635, or the ACS Bldg. 2494.
The essay may also be mailed to SKIESUNLIMITED, 2494 Ricker Road., Fort
Bliss, Texas 79916, Attn: Gabriele Johnson. Deadline for submission
is Oct. 28. Winners will be announced Nov. 4. The winners essay will
be displayed at the Fort Bliss Main Exchange. Entrants must indicate
their name, address, and phone number on your essay. Prizes are sponsored

Join the Fort Bliss Bowling Center for Family Fun Bowling Sundays. Featured

Bliss relocation fair
Entering a new installation is like entering the unknown – it
can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Fort Bliss Army Community Service
understands what families experience during this time and ACS is here
to help. The center invites all new military service members and their
families to our Bienvenidos a Bliss Relocation Fair Oct. 20, at 10 a.m.
at the ACS Bldg. located at 2494 Ricker Road. MWR and various sponsors
in El Paso will be welcoming and celebrating the arrival of our newcomers
to the beautiful sun city of El Paso, Texas. This special event will
showcase valuable resources that ACS, MWR, and various Fort Bliss support
agencies have to offer to our new Soldiers and their families. The Wellness
Clinic at William Beaumont Army Medical Center is participating in the
fair, offering the “Self-Care Sticker” that authorizes free
over-the-counter medications at WBAMC. Participants also have the chance
to join the “Life Force” with the Armed Services Blood Program
and donate blood that will benefit all of our brave Soldiers and civilians
who are deployed to Iraq to enforce Operation Enduring Freedom. Other
scheduled activities include: military working dog demonstration by
the military police, door prize drawings from our sponsors (including
two roundtrip tickets from Southwest Airlines), Fort Bliss history tour,
and live entertainment provided by the 62nd Army Band. For information,

Retirement ceremony
The Retirement Ceremony for the month of October will be held inside
Soldier Hall, Bldg. 2. The ceremony will be held Oct. 26 at 9 a.m. and
dress rehearsal will be held Oct. 25 at 8:30 a.m.
Spooktacular carnival
The Junior Woman’s Club of El Paso will host “Spooktacular,”
a children’s carnival, Oct. 22 and 23. The carnival will be held
at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center. The times for
the carnival are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct.
23. The cost for tickets is $4 for children and $5 for adults. Tickets
can be purchased for $3 at any Howdy’s prior to the event or with
any Junior Woman’s Club member.
Job fair
The Association of the United States Army and the Army Career and Alumni
Program will sponsor a job fair today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The job
fair will be held at the Centennial Club on Biggs Army Airfield.
Pumpkin Patch Harvest
Oct. 22, from noon to 3 p.m. the Officers’ Club will host its
first Halloween Pumpkin Patch Harvest. This family event will include
face painting, pumpkin carving and contest, scariest to most original
costume contest, ghost storytelling and bobbing for apples. Popcorn,
caramel apples, apple cider, hot chocolate and coffee will be available

Halloween parties
The Fort Bliss Bowling Center will host a Halloween costume contest
and party, Oct. 29. Bowl for just $1 a game from 6 to 9:30 p.m.
The costume contest will take place at 8:30 p.m. in the center’s
lounge. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in two divisions: a
youth division ages 12 and under and a division for individuals 13 and
up. First place winners in each division will receive a bowling
ball and bag. Partiers are then invited to stay for the center’s
state-of-the-art sound and glow-in-the-dark light show, Thunder Alley,

The Metro Station, a nightclub for all enlisted ranks, located in the
lower level of the Centennial, will also host a Halloween costume contest
and party, Oct. 29. There will not be a cover charge from 9 to 11:59
p.m. There will be a $5 cover charge from midnight to 5 a.m. Complimentary
snacks will be served through midnight. The costume contest will be
held at 11 p.m. and prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. For

The haunted, old-fashioned Pershing Pub at the Fort Bliss Officers’
Club will conduct a Halloween costume contest and party, Oct. 28, at

The Marine Corps Detachment will have a change of command for Lt. Col.
Michael A. Hunter Oct. 20 at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony will be held at
Smith-Bliss Field.
AFTB basket bingo
Army Community Services will host Army Family Team Building basket bingo
Oct. 27. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and games start at 6:30 p.m. Tickets
may be purchased through any AFTB instructor or at ACS, Bldg. 2494 Ricker
Road. Advance tickets are $10, or $15 at the door. This event is open
to the public. All proceeds go toward childcare fees for AFTB students

Unit pool reservations
The Community Pool and Replica Aquatic Center may be utilized by units
for training purposes. All units must make a reservation in advance
in order to ensure adequate lifeguard ratios and pool safety. Due to
the large number of requests for usage, reservations must be made at
least 60 days in advance. Currently, the pool is fully scheduled through
Nov. 15. Reservations are taken on a first come, first served basis.
Pool staff will work with deploying units if training is required prior
to departure. For reservations, call 568-7431, then follow up with a
memo confirming reservation. The memo may be faxed to 568-2619. The
pool may be reserved from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. All
units must have an OIC or NCOIC in charge of the group. For safety reasons,
all pool rules must be adhered to, and order maintained at all times.

Make a Difference Day
The Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps will participate in a nationwide
day of giving called “Make a Difference Day,” Oct. 22. It
is a day celebrated across the nation to promote volunteerism, and to
help people in their community. This year, Fort Bliss will participate
in several projects that will “Make a Difference” in the
Fort Bliss and the El Paso Community by beautifying Old Fort Bliss,
collecting used coats for under privileged children, collecting gentle
used books for the surrounding schools, and cleaning up a playground

Framing Bliss
