Soldiers with the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade’s Food Services took part in the Army-wide Philip A. Connelly competition Nov. 3. Up to now, the team has done well, winning at the U.S. Forces Command level of the competition.

“We’ll hear the results of today by about mid-December, but I’m sure we scored well. Nobody can touch us,” said Staff Sgt. Ralton R. McCray, a Senior Food Operations noncommissioned officer. “No other team has done as much as we have to ensure a win,”

“It helps that we did win at the FORSCOM level of the competition. It puts us in a great position to compete at the Department of the Army level as finalists,” said Chief Warrant Officer Charles H. Talley Jr.

An awards presentation for the winner and runner-up in each branch of service will be held in Miami early next year. Among the incentives are trophies, certificates of achievement and scholarships.

Evaluators of the 11th ADA Bde. team included Art Ritt, Sgt. Maj. Tom Munson, and Chief Warrant Officer Arnoldo Montiel from the Army Center of Excellence in Subsistence in Fort Lee, Va. Also evaluating was Chief Warrant Officer Jack Van Zanten, a FORSCOM food advisor.

“In the process of having them evaluate us, we certainly learned a lot,” Talley said.

Recognition from the evaluators was given to food service team member Spc. Calyl Cecilio, who was awarded a trophy for Exceptional Contribution to the Improvement of Army Food Service.

“This was unexpected, but I’m proud of what we’ve done and it’s a great compliment for the work we do,” Cecilio said.

Three food service teams remain for evaluation. The 11th ADA will be up against 108th ADA Bde., a team with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii and a field artillery team from Fort Bragg.

“It takes a battalion effort to make things happen,” said Bell.
