TRIWEST hosted its second Military Appreciation Night at the Diablos June 28 at Cohen Stadium, where more than 2,000 Soldiers and their families watched as Shreveport defeated the Diablos 10-5.

Representing Fort Bliss, Col. Harry Cohen, Directorate of Combat Development, demonstrated his baseball skills by opening the evening with the first pitch.

“It was an honor to be able to throw out that first pitch,” said Cohen, who played ball from his childhood through his first year of college. “It was a real thrill for me, but I don’t think any of these guys have to worry about their jobs.”

After the opening pitch, the color guard from the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade presented the colors as the 62nd Army Band played the national anthem.

Wednesday night’s event was the second of four seasonal ballgames sponsored by TRIWEST. The next game is July 12 and the last game is Aug. 23, where an Air Force jet will highlight the event.

“I’m glad we have so many folks in uniform out here,” said Cohen. “It was great of TRIWEST to get tickets into the hands of Soldiers and let them come out here and enjoy a night in beautiful El Paso weather.”

Lydia Ramos, an RN clinical liaison nurse for TRIWEST Healthcare Alliance at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, said their mission is to provide healthcare services for Soldiers and their family members throughout El Paso and throughout the region. But their goal that evening was to bring smiles to their faces.
Ramos has met many Soldiers who have been wounded in Iraq.

“All of us take it for granted when we see it on TV, but not until you meet the Soldiers and the family members that we care for, do you really see how it impacts our freedom,” said Ramos. “I’m an old lady now and I’m truly appreciative of what they do for me. I thank God for that every day, I really do.”

Free tickets for the aforementioned games will be available at the Public Affairs Office. For more information, call 568-4505.
