The University of Texas at El Paso Miners hosted a Military Appreciation Night Saturday at Sun Bowl Stadium. It was an excellent night for football. A cool autumn breeze, along with a 34-20 Miner victory over the Tulane Green Wave, set the stage for a exciting evening of football.

Soldiers, military personnel, family members, students and alumni attended the Raytheon sponsored event.
“Tonight is about the Soldiers,” said Dave Casmus, senior manager of Raytheon El Paso.

As part of the military night festivities, UTEP’s marching band played during the opening ceremony, setting the stage for the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery, 31st ADA Brigade color guard and the UTEP Reserve Officers' Training Corps, who presented the colors as the 62nd Army Band played the National Anthem.

Before starting the game, Fort Bliss Commanding General Maj. Gen. Robert Lennox, and U.S. Army Inspector General Lt. Gen. Stanley Green performed the honorary coin toss.

Following the opening event, the night’s amusement came in many forms.

From the success of the Miners’ offense, defense and special teams and constant antics of the Miner mascot, Paydirt Pete, to T-shirts being tossed to the fans and a halftime contests.

With each touchdown and field goal earned by the Miners, ROTC cadets did push-ups corresponding to the Miner’s score.

As the evening proceeded, and the taunting, chanting and constant roar from fans and attendees continued, spectators provided a rising momentum of excitement to the games ‘action.

As a part of the halftime festivities, sponsor, Raytheon, was recognized for their support.

“We have close relations with both Fort Bliss’ air defense and UTEP,” said Steve Caspar, vice president of integrated defense systems. “This was a good opportunity to bring the two together and recognize the military for all they do.”

Not letting halftime deter their drive, the Miners scored 10 more points in the third quarter, securing the victory.
