More than 2,000 Soldiers, military personnel and family members attended
the Military Appreciation Night sponsored by Tri-West at Cohen Stadium
June 27 to watch the El Paso Diablos win against the Shreveport Sports
with a 7-4 victory,.
Although the Diablos won the game, what began as a battle to gain the
lead over the Sports turned into a defensive standoff as the Diablos
slipped by Shreveport.
There were many units and Soldiers in attendance. From Reserve and National
Guard units to advanced individual training and active duty servicemembers.
But of all the Soldiers in attendance, Soldiers from the two units who
re-deployed less then two weeks ago got the opportunity to throw the
honorary first pitch.
Deployed for a year, Spc. Juan Zamorano and Sgts. Carlos Nogales and
Nathen Tourtellotte of the 950th Transportation Company, along with
Sgt. Christopher Wilson and Staff Sgts. Rosana Gonzales and Douglas
Ketner of the 310th Military Battalion, were awarded Purple Hearts and
Bronze Stars, respectfully.
As the evening proceeded, Soldiers and spectators provided a rising
momentum of excitement to the game’s action as the Diablos and
Sports rallied for the lead.
At the top of the seventh inning, the game was delayed for one hour
and five minutes.
Not letting the weather deter their momentum, the Diablos received the
final run in the eighth inning pushing the lead to 7-4.
With Tuesday’s and Thursday’s win over the Sports, the Diablos
sealed the first-half Southern Division Championship.
The next El Paso Diablos game is scheduled for tomorrow at LaGrave Field
in Fort Worth, Texas, against the Fort Worth Cats.
