Most of the Soldiers are from the Oklahoma National Guard, but 500 are from Kansas and about 150 are from Maryland. The brigade is scheduled to deploy to Southwest Asia in early 2008, said Brig. Gen. Myles Deering, commanding general.
Deering, who addressed the incoming Guardsmen upon their arrival, will remain here with his troops throughout their entire preparation for deployment and depart with them into theater.
“We’ve got to train hard, we’ve got to focus,” said Deering. “You’re special people, you’re special Soldiers. I know what you can do … so let’s start today … we’ll get through this together.”
