Two Fort Bliss Soldiers supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom died Oct. 31 in Mosul, Iraq.
Capt. Timothy I. McGovern and Spc. Brandon W. Smitherman died of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle during combat operations. Both were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cav. Division.
McGovern, 28, of Indiana, was an engineer officer who entered the Army in May 2001. He was the commander of E Company. He was previously stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Campbell, Ky. This was his second tour in Iraq. His military education includes the Air Assault Course, Sapper Leader Course, Airborne School and the Engineer Officer Course.

Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp Jr., chief of engineers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commanding general, visited Fort Bliss Oct. 31 to look at the progress of the largest post expansion in Department of Defense history.
The main purpose of Van Antwerp’s visit was to get an update on and see firsthand the brigade combat team construction site.
