Secretary of the Army visits Bliss

Members of the Corps of Engineers brief Pete Geren, left, secretary of the Army, Monday on the transformation process at Long Knife Village in Biggs Army Airfield. The main purpose of Geren’s visit was to address students at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy on current Army issues and policies. During his tour, Geren had the opportunity to visit and eat lunch with redeployed Soldiers at the Stafford Dining Facility. Geren became the 20th secretary of the U.S. Army July 16. He is a graduate of the University of Texas and the University of Texas Law School, where he received a jurisprudence degree in 1978. He previously served as the undersecretary of the Army. Sheila Casey visits Bliss

Monday morning Fort Bliss was visited by Sheila Casey, wife of Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey. She spent her time in El Paso touring several facilities including the Restoration and Resilience Center, officer and enlisted quarters and various construction sites. The majority of her time was spent at Army Community Service, where she met with staff and several spouses to discuss family-life issues residents of the Fort Bliss community are facing. “Let me know about some things that we might be able to get fixed,” Casey said to the group. “You can say whatever is on your mind.” She discussed the difficulties of dealing with the deployment of spouses and the challenges faced by those bringing children up in a military environment. After the hour-long discussion, Casey left for Biggs Army Airfield, continued her tour and left El Paso shortly after noon. Photo by Daniela Vestal.
