Golf ‘fore’ the heart of it

February is Heart Stroke Awareness Month and Burges High alumni will be hosting a golf tournment benifiting the El Paso Chapter of the American Heart Association. The tourney will be at Butterfield Trail Golf Course Feb. 15. Same-day registration starts at 9:30 a.m. Shotgun start at noon. Four-man teams, corporate sponsors and individual players are welcome. Border Rumble boxing event 

MWR Sports is hosting the "Border Rumble” boxing event at 6 p.m. Jan. 25 at Stout Gym. Active-duty military with five or less amateur fights can participate in both male and female categories. Participants must meet the requirements of a current physical, pre-fight physical and sworn statement of five or fewer amateur fights signed by a commanding officer.  For information, call 568-5995 or e-mail joseph.fedak@us.army.mil.


Bowling league 

Fort Bliss’s Intramural Bowling League will kick off Jan. 28. It will take place at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center and consist of a 14-week season with championships to follow. This will be a Commander’s Cup competition, so teams must consist of active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss. Team members must be from the same unit or brigade, if there are not enough bowlers available from the unit. Each team should consist of five bowlers per night and is limited to 10 bowlers per team. Teams can sign up prior to or on the night of Jan. 28. Bowling days will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Teams should take a letter of intent to participate, consisting of their contact information and team captain, to the bowling center on or before Jan. 28. Racquetball championships 

The Fort Bliss 2008 Racquetball Post Championships will begin the week of Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. at Stout Gym. Participants must be active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss, since it is a Commander’s Cup event. There will be no divisions, but competition will consist of three age groups for men and women: 34 and under, 35-39 and 40 and over. Entries must be submitted to either a sports coordinator or Joe Fedak and the deadline will be Feb. 7. Brackets will be posted Feb.11 by noon. For more information, contact Joe Fedak at 568-5995. 


Combatives tourney 

MWR-Sports is hosting a winter combatives tournament at 9 a.m. Feb. 14. Entries and liability form must be completed by weigh-ins, which take place at 6 a.m. Feb. 13 at Stout Gym. Competition is open to male and female active-duty military personnel. Medals will be awarded to the top four competitors in each weight class. Competitors compete in their respective weight class: 125 and under, 126-140, 141-155, 156-170, 171-180, 181-205 and 206 and over. For more information, contact Joe Fedak at 568-5995. 


Water aerobics 

The Replica Aquatic Center is offering water aerobics classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. Cost is $3 per lesson or $25 per month. For more information, call 568-7431. 


Free aerobics 

Aerobics and spinning classes are now free. There is no longer a fee to participate in any of the classes offered at Stout Gym. Classes start at 6 a.m. and run through 8:30 p.m. and include spinning, yoga, step, kick-boxing and more. For more information, call 568-3826 or  visit www.blissmwr.com.


Tango Tower 

Try your climbing skills on the 50-foot climbing walls, brave the cargo net, or test your limits on the bead climb. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday; climbing fee is $10.  For more information, call 568-8087. 


Tennis lessons

Tennis lessons for adults are now available every Monday for beginners and Wednesday for intermediate from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Bliss Tennis Club & Fitness Zone. Cost is $8 per session or $35 for 5 sessions. For more information, call 569-5448.
