Servicemembers become citizens for country they defend

“U.S. citizenship … it’s an honor and privilege,” said Daniel A. Daniel, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Sudan in a video during a naturalization ceremony at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services El Paso Field Office for three servicemembers who became among the country’s newest citizens Friday.

“This is a defining event of your lives; today the United States is not only your home, it is your country,” said President George W. Bush in the video recording. “With a single oath, all at once you became as fully American as the most direct descendent of the founding fathers.” 

Before pledging their allegiance to the U.S., participants witnessed the history of immigration in a video presentation, which showed Ellis Island in New York City. From 1892 to 1955, Ellis Island was the only gateway where millions entered the country to become U.S. citizens.
