Kevin Pannell, a double amputee and former Soldier from Hunt Springs, Ark., rests near the six-mile mark of the 19th annual Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range Sunday. Pannell was one of an estimated 4,400 participants to walk either a 15- or 26.2-mile route to commemorate the 60-mile march endured by U.S. and Filipino forces captured by the Japanese in 1942. A lavish display of flags was seen Saturday at the Massing of the Colors ceremony held at St. Raphael Church in El Paso, where more than 80 organizations participated in the patriotic event.
Numerous spectators saluted as hundreds marched through the aisles holding both American and organizational flags. The 62nd Army Band played several patriotic melodies, but as the national anthem was played, participants sang with a force that echoed throughout the church. Veterans of all wars were also recognized at the event.
Retired Maj. Gen. William Riley, who said he was impressed with the ceremony, was the speaker for the event.
