Beaumont recognizes doctors’ work during national observance
The idea to set aside a day to honor physicians was perceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond. The first observance of Doctor’s Day observance was held March 30, 1933, by the Barrow County Alliance in Winder, Ga. The anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Ga., in 1842 was selected to honor all physicians.
William Beaumont Army Medical Center recognized its doctors for performing care for Soldiers, retirees, family members and other beneficiaries who come through the doors for treatment. During treatment, the doctors perform vital diagnoses, order necessary tests and prescribe life-saving medication.
Army doctors recognize that practicing military medicine is unique, WBAMC officials said. Not only do they provide medical care in a fixed facility, they must be trained and prepared to practice medicine in field environments, to include the battlefield.
“The Army was my choice because its medical mission involves treating ground troops that have sustained injuries during battle,” said Dr. (Capt.) Alison Celis, assistant chief, emergency department. “I chose emergency medicine because the patients we treat are in urgent of care. Working in emergency medicine is intense - we move non-stop, using critical thinking skills all day, every day.”
Members of the WBAMC command team thanked all the physicians who practice there and provide medical care, which touches lives, showing compassion and humility while providing quality health care daily, officials said.
In 1958, a resolution commemorating Doctor’s Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1990, joint legislation was introduced in Congress to establish a national Doctor’s Day. In October 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a document designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
