Freedom Camp 2008
This three-day camp is planned for children, ages 7 to 18, of Soldiers who are currently deployed or have returned from deployment within the last seven months. The deadline to register is June 6. The camp is being held June 19 through 21. Registration packets and instructions may be downloaded at www.blissmwr.com/freedomcamp/ or picked up at Central Registration, Bldg. 1743. SAT/ACT/PSAT prep
Child and Youth Services is offering classes to help prepare college-bound students. Classes will be offered May 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YouthPlex, Bldg. 195 on Chaffee Road. Students must pre-register through Central Registration, Bldg. 1743 on Victory Road, adjacent to the Fort Bliss Inn. There is a $5 registration fee. CYS youth fair
MWR Child and Youth Services invite all to participate in their annual Children’s Fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1p.m. at GMH Kelly Park. Red Cross volunteers
The American Red Cross at William Beaumont Army Medical Center is sponsoring a summer volunteer program for ages 13 to 17. The program is scheduled for June 2 to Aug. 15. If interested in becoming a volunteer, complete a registration packet. Packets can be picked up in room 4K2, Bradley Building, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Once the packet is returned, a reservation for orientation can be made for May 28, or June 10, 16 or 18. To make an orientation reservation, applicants must complete and return the packet. For more information, call 569-2483.
Volunteer Corps
The Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps and YESS will be hosting leadership training for youth in ninth through 12th grades June 12 and 13 at GMH Military Housing, 1991 Marshall Road. The leadership training will be based on Points of Lights Youth Leadership Institute. Applications can be retrieved from ACS, Bldg. 2494, Ricker Road, or www.blissmwr.com. Mickelsen Library
Mickelsen Community Library hosts “Read Me a Story” every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. for children ages 2 to 5 in the Children’s Room of the library. The library also hosts “Family Story Time” for children ages 2 to 6 at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Each week features a new theme and includes singing and crafts. Pre-K programs
Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services offers Pre-K programs at both the Main Child Development Center and the Logan CDC. The curriculum encompasses all the Texas Education Agency Pre-K guidelines, as well as specific objectives and benchmarks given by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Families with 4-year-old children already enrolled full-time at CYS can participate in this program without any additional cost.
Family discounts
Fee reductions for family members of deceased or severely disabled Soldiers who served in OIF, OEF and other mission-related contingencies are available. All patrons eligible to use Army Child and Youth Services will receive registration and re-registration at no cost. Discounts have changed for family members of sponsors who are deployed; on an unaccompanied PCS, a TCS or a TDY; part of rear detachment; wounded warriors; and fallen warriors. A copy of enrollment in the Army Disabled Soldier Support System should be provided to CER, Bldg. 1743.
